An emotional moment and a misunderstanding (Broussard lied about death of Mother on Meet the Press)

WASHINGTON - The Jefferson Parish president's emotional retelling of a mother's desperate calls from a New Orleans nursing home included details that conflict with the timeline of the tragedy.

The story, of a colleague's mother begging her son for rescue as flood waters rose after Hurricane Katrina, came to prominence on Sunday, Sept. 4, when Aaron Broussard, president of Jefferson Parish in New Orleans, was interviewed by Tim Russert on NBC's Meet the Press. (MSNBC is a Microsoft-NBC joint venture.)

New details and interviews with the son whose mother died in the flood show that the tragedy unfolded from Saturday through Monday, Aug. 29 — not Monday through Friday, Sept. 2 as recounted by Broussard. The owners of the nursing home were indicted Tuesday for the deaths of more than 30 residents, which officials say occurred on Aug. 29.

Broussard is president of Jefferson Parish. The nursing home is in St. Bernard Parish. He had no control over Bernard Parish, or the evacuation of St. Rita's nursing home.

BROUSSARD: ... The guy who runs this building I'm in, emergency management, he's responsible for everything. His mother was trapped in St. Bernard nursing home and every day she called him and said, "Are you coming, son? Is somebody coming?" And he said, "Yeah, Mama, somebody's coming to get you. Somebody's coming to get you on Tuesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Wednesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Thursday. Somebody's coming to get you on Friday." And she drowned Friday night. She drowned Friday night.

"details that conflict with the timeline of the tragedy."

An interesting characterization. Back home they'd call it lying, but I guess it all depends on how you want to spin it.

Jackie Bauer, a spokeswoman for Broussard who was present during the Meet the Press interview, said "it was a misunderstanding."

Late on Friday, Bauer told MSNBC.com: "I was there when he (Broussard) was doing that, when he was saying that, I think he was meaning that he was calling, he was calling and trying to talk to Tommy and telling him ‘don’t worry,' trying to console Tommy, 'don’t worry, we’ll get her out, don’t worry we’ll get her out.'"

I don't see how anyone could think that or buy that explanation. Broussard said something else, and was very specific:
His mother was trapped in St. Bernard nursing home and every day she called him and said, "Are you coming, son? Is somebody coming?" And he said, "Yeah, Mama, somebody's coming to get you. Somebody's coming to get you on Tuesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Wednesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Thursday. Somebody's coming to get you on Friday...

I saw it live and it was acting at its worst. My father and I said "Cry us a river" and "Academy Award for Melodrama".

Here's the website for the Parish but I can't see there where they give you the email address for Broussard. If anyone has it, I'd appreciate getting it. I'd like to let him know what slime he is - not that he'll get it but it will make me feel a lot better.

Red, Broussard is not president of St. Bernard Parish, where St. Rita's nursing home is was located.

Somebody already posted another media outlet's coverage of this lie on Friday, Sept. 16, I believe (you can do search). So nice to know that MSNBC "rushes" to correct lies spouted on its program.

Why do we need obsolete MSM coverage again?

This is soooo wrong. The media played this non-stop. It's certain that this had a lot to do with the public's perception of the federal response. Anyone willing to bet even a penny that Russert will mention this.

Good point. So we're looking to see if the St. Bernard Parish prez issued an evac order.

That's a pretty big mistake to be making, blubbering crocodile tears on national television on the most influential of the Sunday morning talk shows. Too big to believe that it actually WAS a mistake. But while I agree with everybody about "thank goodness for the bloggers", the bloggers are good at surgically removing cancers like Dan Rather and his forged documents - they're NOT as effective at countering the tidal wave of intentionally bulls**t "reporting" by the vaunted, degreed, oh-so-important fourth estate. Punch an MSM shill if you ever get a chance...

The whole dramatic thrust of this guy's treacly playacting on TV hung on the claim that she called her son repeatedly, day after agonizing day and still couldn't be saved because, over those several crucial days, gov't FEMA types didn't give a damn. A proper understanding of the circumstances of the lady's death shows that she neither called her son, nor did her tragic story unfold over several days.

Wow...that is a textbook con. Broussard was calling for the "criminal indictment" of the guilty gov't officials, if I recall correctly. Somebody should be writing up an indictment of this bozo himself, for willful fraud perpetrated on the public airwaves.

Rodrigue said he didn’t see or hear Broussard’s comments on Meet the Press. When told of the sequence of phone calls that Broussard described on Meet the Press, Rodrigue said “No, no, that’s not true.”

Now wouldn't you like to be a fly on the wall when Rodrique and Broussard meet the next time? What on earth would Broussard say to Rodrique and vice versa? Do you think that Broussard would shift the blame to Rodrique and claim that he never got the straight goods from him the first time?

Russert will ignore it. CNN played the tape over and over too. They will ignore it. Even to make the competition look bad, CNN will not risk alienating their "it's all Bush's fault" audience.

FoxNews should pick it up. They have more viewers then all the other cable news combined.

How can any media protect the viewers from someone coming on a show and spouting lies?

They are professionals. They should know how to avoid this, but they love it and want it to be true, like Dan Rather and his fake memo story.
