Perhaps she should stay out of those "middle aisles" of grocery stores. If she were to choose her food items from only the outer perimeter aisles of a grocery store, she'd be fine. The junk food, bad food, is normally found in the inner aisles. Stick with the fruit/vegetable aisle, dairy aisle, meat, and bread aisles.
When I was a kid we were poor so going to McDonalds was a rare treat like going to a fancy resturant. We only had two black and white TV channels and no video games so I got exercize.

Boxed macaroni and cheese is the WORST thing a child could eat. I'd never serve that to my family. Refined carbohydrates, artifical cheee chemicals,etc.etc. artificaljunk to make the brain lazy at school. Never listen to the government telling you what to eat lady. to be continued...
WE got up early, and came to the breakfast table. It was covered with ham, eggs, bacon, grits, fried potatoes, biscuits, honey, mollasses, and real butter. Clabbered milk made the biscuits fabulous, and a slob of that salty country ham made a hit with us. We ate our fill.
At lunchtime, we came in to the house for "dinner", the mid-day meal.the table was covered with food. Fried chicken, or pork chops. Mashed potatoes, or rice. always biscuits, but cakes and pies were kept close. Dessert was important.
In the evening, we had supper. It was a repeat of "dinner". Plenty of plenty.
My uncle probaly weighed 160-170 lbs. My aunt weighed a little more. Their kids never got very fat. They worked it off...
What a load of BS. Note the writer's technique: chicken is the expensive element, vegetables to steam are cheap, but he/she/it combines the two and then claims that it is too expensive to eat healthy vegetables. Tuna and sardines are cheap in the can, turkey franks can be bought at (no doubt 'evil') Walmart in a pack of 8 or 10 for about a dollar, ground turkey is cheaper than chicken, and then a little cheap ground beef isn't a problem since it isn't the majority of protein. Buy roma tomatoes, broccoli by the bunch(the healthiest vegetable out there), yellow squash, carrot packs, apples, bananas(super cheap), and a glass of OJ and presto, you have 5-6 servings of fruit and veggies a day without breaking the bank. Anyone can afford that, unless they are just making excuses or lazy.

Mine too. Those were happy times, huh? I miss snapping peas with my grandma on the front porch. *sigh*
It's free to get off yer a$$ and walk around the block...it'll take your mind off of eating, lessen the risk of heart disease and you know what???? .... you can't get pregnant while your walking....

We're the only country in the world with FAT POOR PEOPLE.... Why don't we starve them for 5-6 weeks 3 times a year... ??? It would save money, lessen their health issues and probably cut down on greenhouse gasses.
Exactly. I buy whole chickens on sale and keep them in my freezer...after you eat the chicken, you can use the carcass to make soup. It doesn't cost that much to buy lettuce, an onion, and carrots and make a nice healthy salad. A cooked dinner also often produces leftovers that can stretch for lunch the next day, etc.

Well, first you had to have a mom that ACTUALLY knew HOW to cook and not just open a can.
Then they would have to dragged their Fat A$$ from the couch for thirty minutes to do it.

And as we all know, if something's DIFFICULT for the poor to do, no one should expect them to do it. Cry me a river - she suffers from either ignorance on how to cook or laziness. Boxed macaroni and cheese is GARBAGE but it takes the least effort to make it. How about investing in a thrift store crock pot and making casseroles and rice/bean dishes? That's cheap and healthy. I used to place ads looking for people with fruit trees who had excess fruit they didn't want. You wouldn't believe how much apple sauce and pear sauce I canned that year as a result - all free. They freaking GAVE it away. Why can't others be resourceful and do this?
Okay, maybe we can get this to work.
For each specified amount one revieves from the government for food, let them tend a small plot of land to grow their vegetables. Teach them how to can and put it up for the winter.
Worked for my grandfather and his parents and their parents and on & on.
We should start a thread on how to eat healthy when you're poor. I've got lots of good recipes. ;)

By this "professor's" theory, your uncle should weight half a ton.
Of course the Prof. never lifted anything heavier than a file.

Other cheap sources of protein-rich food -- canned tuna, eggs, and milk, which is double-cheap when you buy it two gallons at a time (good, that is, if you're not lactose intolerant, which THANK GOD I am not ... I drink about a quart a day).
Yeah, I'd give my right arm to have my grannys back to tell these Professors what "Hard Times" really were.
Back then poor meant skinny to the bone.
