My wife and I can afford to shop it the expensive grocery stores but I still go for the bottom dollar Sav-A-Lot groceries. My frozen veggies don't have to have the Birdseye label and my chicken doesn't need to be Holly Farms brand. I know when the local stores have their sales and I know when their trucks come in to restock the shelves.
We made it "healthy" when I was growing up. Mom added SPAM to the macaroni and cheese for a complete meal! I do not eat spam to this day.
LOL!!
That's what the MSM would say but it's actually Lyndon Baines Johnson's fault (rest his soul)......
Kool filter kings??? Speaking of which cigs are at least seven-eight dollars a box here in NY. You can buy a hot dinner at my job for that money, all fresh and organic meat and vegetables.
I looked forward to the visits. I'll never forget the smell inside a tobasso barn. We came twice each summer. Once to "top" the plants, and in the late summer to get the lugs. Topping was the nastiest thing you can do. You walk down the rows, and break off the flowering tops. They are so full of sticky saps, that you have to use lava and turpentine, all over, to get it off.
I remember going out to the chicken coup and gathering eggs. I can still smell the fish stews, made in an iron kettle, in the yard.
It was surely a better life... I make a lot of money these days. I would gladly give it all away to take my grandkids back!
Man, boxed mac & cheese sure gets badmouthed ... *sigh* I LOVE the Kraft white cheddar chees and mac, but I add bits of bacon and either sauteed white onion & garlic, or nice fresh green onion, for a bit of spiciness & health. Delish!!! The trick is NOT TO EAT THE WHOLE DAMNED THING IN ONE SITTING.
Ah, happy times, indeed ... I remember being about 5 years old, sitting with my mom and grandma snapping beans, just enjoying listening to them chatting, and being happy feeling that I was "helping."
Thanks for your post; it called to mind a memory that I hadn't thought of in quite awhile :)
Parasite breeding more parasites.
Nagin brand foods.

And a plan
Is it not more expensive to buy fast food every day?
The only real problem I have with fruits and vegetables is that sometimes I reach for the chips a few days in a row and then notice the apples and peaches Mrs Bear bought for me have started getting squishy and fuzzy...
Last time I went shopping, whole wheat flour was the same price as white flour. Pasta = flour, eggs, a little salt.
However he had to catch, pluck and cook his/her own food.

And nobody was standing around offering him a side order of coleslaw and a biscuit either!
And don't forget eating some of those fresh beans as you snapped them. Granny is the genesis of my green thumb.
Produce can be expensive, and it is probable that markets in poor neighborhoods have trouble moving produce enough to keep the food fresh.
Things like ramen noodles and mac and cheese are cheap, have a long shelf life, and can be purchased in large quantities without worrying about spoiling in a few days.
My own personal experience with healthy being more expensive than unhealthy is this... I was driving through Central Florida a year ago and stopped at one of those multi-purpose roadside stations on the Florida Turnpike. A bottle of water from a vending machine was more expensive than a soft drink. Zero calories, and a necessity to life, was more expensive than a lot of empty calories and sugar.
Cheap convenience food may stretch the pocketbook, but it does also add a lot of starches, sugars, salts, and preservatives that the body has a difficult time processing. This being said, unhealthy foods do greatly contribute to the obesity epidemic, but no more than sitting in front of the television playing video games all day. If mothers are worried about their children getting fat on the food they serve, they should be keeping them physically active to compensate.
I don't know about the food bank in your area, but I give the one in my area prime home grown wholesome fruits and vegetables. I notice when I deliver that there seems to be lots of other wholesome food there donated by others.
The problem according to some of the staff is that many of the recepients don't seem to prefer that to the pre packaged stuff.
McDonalds has been quick to factor in the cost of trucking. The major food stores will also be kicking up the prices. There is some kind of transportation rate regulation and they have gotten permission to raise trucking fees. Sticker shock will commence Jan 1.
