Bill Kristol Rips Miers Nomination: W "Flinched"
Fox News

Posted on 10/03/2005 6:31:17 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

In a just-completed interview on Fox News, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol made no effort to sugar coat his criticism of President Bush's selection of Harriet Miers as his Supreme Court nominee.

Among Kristol's comments:

There is no way to say she is the best-qualified.

It really looks like W, faced with pressure and criticism, "flinched."

This is an insult to the well-qualified conserative women W has appointed to the federal bench.

W could have appointed Miers to a federal judgeship before but didn't do so. Could reflect his views on her qualifications up till now.

He's spoken with a number of leading conservatives already this morning and they are disappointed.

Kristol stated more than once that he was surprised by the pick and was obviously disappointed, to the point of seeming almost angry.

Harriet Miers.... the positive case for her is that GWBush knows her well since she has been his personal lawyer when he was Texas governor. He knows she is conservative. He knows her mind. I see the Karl Rove behind this sly calculus

Little paper trail (obviously)

She's a woman (obviously) making it harder for Chucky and the gang to trash her

The unpleasant fact is GWBush's poll numbers are down, thus giving him less leverage over the Donks. Harriet Miers is as good as we can get at this time and place.

I agree with you 150%

Chucky Schumer is on FNC talking about Miers right now and he seems very happy!

According to Drudge, she also gave money to Gore.

The fact that she gave money to Al Gore when he could actually win in Tennessee is not such a terrible thing.

"You know the Senate would have ground to a halt if JRB or Priscilla had been appointed. "

You say this like it's a bad thing! :-)

I'm disappointed with this pick ... Edith Jones would have been far better... so would Luttig or Karen Williams.

She's another O'Connor. A politician-lawyer.

phoooey.

No sense dreaming. We had a shot at 4 Thomas/Scalia judges on the courts, and we are not getting them.

This may have been a major turning point in her life. Once you see the liberal tactics at work its a life changing experience.

Very bad news:

Chuck Schumer now giving press conf and being mildly positive about Miers:

"President Bush apparently didn't nominate someone from the right wing of his party. He knows that the country doesn't agree with those far-right policiesl."

He called today a day of "some hope; a good first day."

So for those who distrust Kristol, shouldn't you in any case be concerned by Schumer's praise, particularly when coupled with similar remarks from Geraldine Ferraro?

I think she probably is the best candidate, if you consider the fact that she is, first and forement, absolutely and utterly loyal to the President. If that hasn't been a hallmark of this administration, I don't know what has.

Your remarks show me that you don't follow President Bush very well if you think he is going against his base. He knows just what he is doing.

You said: FoxNews just reported that Harry Reid likes Miers.

Biden said he "liked" Roberts, too. How did he vote?

It's why we have elections. Each election we go out and open a can of whoop arse on the demoncrats. We have the Presidency, the Senate and the House. This is the best the party can do? They would be setting a precedent however, if they didn't screw us, so I imagine that went into their thinking.

Sad to say, Kristol-- a guy I thoroughly dislike-- is right.

"I suspect she's a sacrificial candidate and she knows it. She's agreed to be beated to death in Senate hearings, after which Dems will proclaim victory. Bush then nominates a true constitutionalist, and an exhausted Senate Dem club doesn't have the energy or will to oppose him/her."

Since the only people who want that to happen are conservatives ... it will never happen.

I bet she has a very easy nomination, the Dems secretly smiling that the conservatives got screwed again and knowing that it could have been a lot worse for them.

And when you don't vote Republican, you get who?

When you don't vote Republican, for now, you get a party that increases spending every year. When you vote Republican, you get the same thing, only in this case, moreso. At least Billy Boy knew how to spell "veto." When you don't vote Republican, for now, you get Ginsberg and Breyer (who may actually be a tad less liberal than Justice Brennan was.) When you vote Republican, you get Souter and Stevens and Kennedy and Blackmun and Brennan and Warren, and so forth.

Voting Republican to change the courts or to achieve any other conservative goal is falling for a lie.

We need to build a real conservative party in this country. The GOP isn't it.

She donated to Gore back in 1988, when he was not so bad.

"I agree with you, Roberts had his share of naysayers in the beginning as well, now he is Chief justice. I trust W on Miers."

You know nothing about how Roberts will carry out his duties. All you have is conjecture about him, so don't act like we are all happy about him now.

That settles it. If Kristol is against her , she must be a good pick.

You have a "real" conservative party: it's the Reform Party; vote for their candidate.
