In a just-completed interview on Fox News, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol made no effort to sugar coat his criticism of President Bush's selection of Harriet Miers as his Supreme Court nominee.
Among Kristol's comments:
There is no way to say she is the best-qualified.
It really looks like W, faced with pressure and criticism, "flinched."
This is an insult to the well-qualified conserative women W has appointed to the federal bench.
W could have appointed Miers to a federal judgeship before but didn't do so. Could reflect his views on her qualifications up till now.
He's spoken with a number of leading conservatives already this morning and they are disappointed.
Kristol stated more than once that he was surprised by the pick and was obviously disappointed, to the point of seeming almost angry.
What like securing our borders and cutting waste fraud and abuse???????
Its really too early for the rats to attack a female pick. They would appear irrational at this point (sorta like the freepers who will never vote for a republican ever, ever again) in taking a stand without reason and logic.
They need to be presented with something "NEW", something they had discovered while doing their due dillegence that will raise "QUESTIONS", questions which cannot be answered and then they can safely "REJECT" her because of "FEARS", that cannot be satisified.
1) The Democrats want to stage a fight and defeat a nominee, no matter who it is.
2) Miers is moderate enough and lacks a paper trail - i.e., the Democrats will look ridiculous if they stage the collective hissy fit they have promised their left wing.
3) If Miers gets rejected, the Democrats will have exhausted themselves, and they will end up facing a Lutting or Brown with zero credibility left to argue against them, especially since Miers' lack of judical experience is the only card they have to beat her. If they predictably overplay it, how are they going to subsequently fight off a Luttig?
4) If Miers gets confirmed anyway, Bush has managed to get a more conservative nominee onto the Court than would have seemed likely in the current political environment.
5) Stevens and Ginsburg aren't going to make it to 2008, so more openings are imminent.

That's true. With losers like Specter in there he probably knows that it just ain't gonna happen.
What I find quite interesting is that her only donation to non-Texan in recent years was a year 2000 donation to Donald Sternberg for Senate campaign. Donald Sternberg was (or I think stil is) Nebraska Attorney General who defended his State partial-birth abortion ban before the Supreme Court.

I'm Bush's base.... Harry Reid and Chuckie Schumer are happier about this pick than I am. that should tell you who this plays to.
I know the names that would have made me happy: The known Judicial conservatives that have proven themselves on the Federal bench. Luttig, Jones, Williams, etc. or even better, Janice Rogers Brown.
He didnt pick a known conservative. He picked a White House operative from Texas with no time on the Federal bench.
This was a pick to keep Arlen Specter and the mods happy, not me happy.

Few thought Gore was conservative. Many did like Bentson, and wished he was the nomination. This makes me wonder if she is just another women who makes choices by emotion.
Well, I was wrong. I had the good gut feeling President Bush would choose Louisiana Judge Edith Clement. Oops!
I have to think President Bush considers her a good conservative choice, but the best possible pick? I don't think so.
Maybe he's pulling a fast one, thinking she will be rejected in committee so he would then get to name his real choice, a staunch conservative judge that will warm all our hearts.
The unpleasant fact is GWBush's poll numbers are down, thus giving him less leverage over the Donks.

He is going to let the Dems win one by claiming she has no experience, then he will nominate someone with experience who he expects to pass.

The Reform Party (aka the Deformed Party) is no more conservative than either of treh two major parties. It's simply an echo of the two major parties, with perhaps somewhat cleaner ethical standards.
The conservative party in this country today is the Constitution Party. I don't agree with all its policies, but I certainly agree with most of them, and they're far closer to mainstream conservatism than any other party.
Bush, like his father really wants Democrats to like him. Thats what he is a nice guy who wants to be liked more than anything. This served him well as a cheerleader and frat boy. But it makes for a POOR leader.
