Reid Urged Miers Selection (Dingy Harry says YA ! "

The expected political brawl over President Bush’s second Supreme Court nominee might not ever take place – because it was a powerful Democrat, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, who had urged her selection.

The senator from Nevada first hinted that he thought highly of Miers shortly before Bush announced the nomination of John Roberts for a seat on the Court.

Bush phoned Reid to tout Roberts, and Reid took the opportunity to tell the president that had had enjoyed working with Miers, the White House legal counsel, during the search for a nominee.

A few days earlier, Reid had met with Miers and suggested ways to avoid a divisive confirmation process, according to a report published in August in The New Yorker magazine.

Now the Associated Press is reporting: "Democratic and Republican special interests groups had been braced for a political brawl over the (second) pick, but they may not get it.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had urged the president to consider Miers, according to several officials familiar with Bush’s consultations with Congress.

After the nomination was announced, Sen. Reid issued this statement:

"I like Harriet Miers. As White House Counsel, she has worked with me in a courteous and professional manner. I am also impressed with the fact that she was a trailblazer for women as managing partner of a major Dallas law firm and as the first woman president of the Texas Bar Association.

"In my view, the Supreme Court would benefit from the addition of a justice who has real experience as a practicing lawyer. The current justices have all been chosen from the lower federal courts. A nominee with relevant non-judicial experience would bring a different and useful perspective to the Court.

"I look forward to the Judiciary Committee process which will help the American people learn more about Harriet Miers, and help the Senate determine whether she deserves a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court.”

I have never cared much for Teddy Kennedy's best friend in the Senate, but if you had seen the interview you would have seen that he was uncomfortable talking about this nominee.

It looks like a carbon copy of many of the gripes here. I haven't seen this much agreement since Kelo v New London.

I agree. If I wanted the RATS to pick the SCOTUS nominees I would have voted for that communist Kerry.

We`ve been sold out.

Figured that out, did ya?

Unless Republicans start reacting to what El Presidente' Bush is doing rather than blindly supporting him because he's not a Democrat, the disaster he's making will get even larger.

Everyone needs to start calling their reps and senators and start making it clear they *don't* support what's being done... and return all the begging notes from the RNC etc empty except for appropriate comments.

He had an opportunity to select a known conservative

Apparently, he did. Just becasue YOU don't know anything about her doesn't make her a poor candidate. Some of you really have a Hollywood mentality.

This is a legitimate situation where the Senate should exercise their "advise and consent" role and reject the nominee. She is unqualified to be a justice on the SCOTUS, plain and simple, regardless of ideology. Bush could have made a long list of highly qualified individuals and forced the Dems to fillibuster all of them till they got exhausted. But no, he is taking the easy way out, IMHO.

IMO some Freepers are overreacting to Reid's nod - IMO this was a good move by GWB given all the circumstances going on today.

There is an old saying about never look a gift-horse in the mouth!

I agree...Bush can't just throw in some super conservative no matter how much we might want to see that. Miers is a conservative NOW...who cares what happened in the past. She'll do a fine job...

Wow! Look at the one issue people on this thread...this nominee says she respects the United States Constitution, she believes in it; calls it brilliant. The more I learn about her, Harriett, the more I like what I am learning. Those of you who wanted a conservative, had better read this woman's briefs, she fits like a glove with the exception, and it is a good one, she abides by the law and is especially good when it concerns women AND she will not legislate from the bench.

President Bush is NOT running for POTUS but many good Republicans will be so if you want the nation to lean towards conservatism and remain secure from terrorists, vote these good people into office. Nailing the left on every issue is not the answer; if the fight is off, so be it.

Borders should be your real concern now – AZ is about to put up a CA style fence. Don’t complain if you are not willing to go to work getting laws changed - It is the Congress that you must complain to and your state legislature. Heaping all ills on this President merely shows the nescient approach many take about government. It would be interesting to know how many on this thread did nothing to stop Ruth Badder Ginsberg…….

I know she donated to Clinton in 92, and Gore in 88. What more do I need to know. As an nominee for SCOTUS she is unacceptable. She is no Janice Rogers Brown and that is who belongs on the bench.

Cheney just said "we've never backed off from a fight with this congress or any congress". So that's settled.

Bush has no power, he needed 60 votes and there aren't 60 votes to break a fillabuster, or 50 votes for nuclear option.

If there had been 60 republican senators miguel estrada would now be the supreme court pick instead he was fillabustered.

The constitution party got harry reid election in nevada, ensign would have retired harry reid except for the third parties.

Third parties gave us ruth bader ginsberg and stephen breyer.

I guarantee Roberts and Miers are better than them.

If Reid supports her, she must be an originalist. I'm sure sure some Bush lap dog will make the point. Or maybe Jay Sekulow and ACLJ will.

Not all the Democrats can come out and support her or even the dumbest conservatives and Republican might catch on that this pick was a betrayal of Bush's promise to appoint a justice in the Scalia-Thomas mold.
