Mayor Ray Nagin said he's worked for weeks to try to find the financing that would allow him to keep the city workers on the payroll, but...that isn't possible.
He said it's with "great sadness" that he must announce that the city can't hold onto its dedicated workers. He thanked those who've served New Orleans.
...he hopes the affected workers will "land on their feet."
Police and fire crews won't be affected by the layoffs.

Of course, 2500 of those 3000 don't really exist.
i wonder how many of these ever actually exisdted?
Any bets on if these employees are real?
It could be nothing, nothing as in these 3,000 people on the City's payroll didn't exist anyway...like some of those AWOL policeman who didn't exist.
Do they really not exist or simply don't show up for work?........
This is a brand new opportunity for cronyism, writ large!!
As long as Nagin is one of the one's being laid off.
Let him take up a collection of all the graft money the local politicians got. The hell with him.
Nagin finds a silver lining.
Whether non-existant or no shows, they'll still vote for Nagin, Blanco, etc.
I have a feelin' that NO politics and LA's in general is going to go thru a bigger clean-up than Hurricane Katrina's physical damage...........
WTF? Why doesn't he just "fire" the non-existent cops they have been paying all these years!! This guy is really an idiot!
"Dedicated" My pants!!!
Billy Tauzen's famous "Half of Louisiana is under water, the other half is under indictment."...
What about the missing bus drivers, did they exist?
Do they all vote absentee?
The FBI began investigating the New Orleans police who had abandoned their post during Katrina and of the more than 500 screened so far, 84% don't exist.
Tony Snow said, of the 1700 police working for New Orleans, maybe only 1000 really exist.
Where was that payroll money going?
We can be relatively sure it is not flood control or levee improvements.
Watta Jacka$$! No head for government bidness! He could just fire them and they would have to get unemployment from the feds. He's thrown everything else at the feds why not his 'imaginary friends' er, workers.
Maybe this is his way of taking the phantom employees off the payroll books.
The names of a few of those to be laid off has been made public:
"As long as Nagin is one of the one's being laid off."
Fat chance of that being the case......
Too bad that Nagin isn't Samuri (or Nixon, for that matter.....). Then he would do the honorable thing.
