Racine council approves NRA coloring book

RACINE, Wis. - Police officers may soon be asking students to color in images of handguns to teach them about gun safety.

The Racine Police Department got approval from the City Council on Tuesday night to use coloring books donated by the National Rifle Association at schools.

Supporters say the books, which feature the character Eddie Eagle, will help teach children responsibility. But opponents, including Racine Alderman Pete Karas, argue the books won't provide enough training to keep children safe.

"I just don't think (it's helpful) at all to be handing out sheets of paper to do what's a fun activity and they are coloring a handgun," Karas told the council, which voted 8-7 to approve the books.

The council also voted to create a citizens group to examine ways officers could teach children about guns beyond using the coloring books.

Jayne Siler told the council she wants her children to learn outside of the home about the dangers of guns.

"There will come a day when more people will carry guns with them" into malls and onto the streets, Siler said.

Let us hope so. I'm sure many people are considering it now who weren't before, after what happened in New Orleans.

Lady, that's already happening. The difference is, without appropriate CCW laws in place, the ones carrying are the thugs.

Jayne Siler told the council she wants her children to learn outside of the home about the dangers of guns.

What does this mean? Isn't her kid's school outside of the home? Her statement may contain more unintentional irony than she realizes.

I'm sure what she really meant to say was, "I want my kids to enroll in an NRA-approved firearms safety course. That way they will be properly trained and get some quality range time, too."

Kids are fascinated by guns. Teach them right.

Wow! Something NRA-related got endorsed by a governmental body in Wisconsin? I've got to look out my window and see if pigs are flying!

I would have to agree. Being born and raised in deer hunting country, most kids learn how to shoot and respect guns at a very early age. This article came from Racine, maybe not a typical WI city.

What scares the hoplophobes most of all is that the kids just might learn something positive about guns. If young people get familiar with firearms and learn to handle them safely they will hopefully grow up to be responsible gun-owning adults. The hoplophobes will thus have a tougher time pushing their gun-grabbing agenda in the next generation.
