Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005 7:12 a.m. EDT Dick Morris: Condi's the GOP's Next Eisenhower

Top political strategist Dick Morris said Tuesday that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice could win the GOP's 2008 presidential nod much the same way Gen. Dwight Eisenhower did in 1952.

"I think what's going to happen is that all over the country - people who see [Condi's] qualifications or are entranced by the job she's doing as Secretary of State and who are scared to death of the other one [Hillary], are going to get together and set up Condi clubs in their localities," Morris told WOR Radio's Bob Grant.

Explaining the central premise of his new book "Condi vs Hillary: The Next Great Presidential Race," Morris said the pro-Rice groups will be able to "field their own [convention] delegate slates" who will remain officially uncommitted, "but in fact will be for Condi."

"I think that those delegate slates, particularly in Iowa, are going to start winning." said Morris. "And that's going to blow up the Republican nominating process and create an irresistible momentum for Condi."

"Dwight Eisenhower did the exact same thing," Morris told Grant. "Eisenhower stayed as commander-in-chief of NATO, he didn't campaign, announced two weeks before the Republican convention, won the primaries as a write-in candidate and beat Bob Taft for the nomination."

Morris said that while Rice's unique charisma is likely to spark a grass roots campaign, her probable opponent, Hillary Clinton, is running on borrowed DNA.

"I liked Bill Clinton. I think he was a good president," he told Grant. "I'm proud that I helped reelect him. But I have never liked Hillary Clinton.

"It's one thing to say I liked Bobby Kennedy and Jack Kennedy but I don't like Teddy. At least there's DNA there - they're related."

But Morris noted: "There's no genetic material between Bill and Hillary Clinton. And in many ways they're opposites."

Morris ticked off the contradictions.

"Bill is a genuine warm person - Hillary is not.

"Bill is tremendously intelligent. Hillary is about average. She flunked the D.C. bar [exam], for example.

"Bill is creative and innovative. Hillary does it by rote. "Hillary Clinton would be Richard Nixon in Democratic clothing," Morris told Grant.

Dick Morris is a very smart guy but he's way off on this one, I think. I would not be at all happy for Condi to be the choice. I prefer George Allen, or Rudy. Actually, that's the ticket I'd like to see. Rice has been very unimpressive as Sec. of State, IMO. And under no circumstances can Hillary win more than few states, and I think the Dems know that. My liberal friends hate Hillary, so.... :)

"There's no genetic material between Bill and Hillary Clinton...."

I wonder if Chelsey is aware of that?

Yeah, she is above average on the war on terror. But what about spending, tax cuts, abortion, gay marriage, judicial appointments, crime, healthcare, environment, immigration, guns rights, transportation, the U.N. among other issues.

She's not declared on spending
She supports the tax cuts
She's squishy middle on abortion
She hasn't said on Gay Marriage (which is a dead issue, IMHO)
She seems to support originalists for the court
I would guess that she is kick butt on crime, as she is on terror
She hasn't declared on health care
She doesn't support Kyoto, so she is a realist on the environment.
She supports President Bush's "guest worker" approach to immigration, as do I
She describes herself as a Second Amendment Absolutist (Oh Yeah!)
Nobody gives a damn about transportation, except for the pork.
And she supported the nomination of John Bolton, and thinks the UN needs a kick in the pants.

All in all, she is somebody I can support. And she would kick the stuffing out of Hillary!. That's all I need to know.

Dead for those opposed, support, or just dead and off of everyones' minds?

I think it is spent as a political issue.

Can someone tell me why I, as a conservative, should vote FOR Condoleeza Rice (as opposed to voting AGAINST her opponent)?

I would sure consider voting for her. First, she has to run, second, she has to stand the fire of the primaries and get the nomination. If that should happen then I would have not choice but to vote for her because consider the possiblity of the Dems winning. I agree with the other comment on this thread that her recent position in Israel is troubling, One big positive thing I that stands out with me is that black conservatives tend to know the base values of "conservatism" on a more personal and day to day level. COndi is consitent and predictable according to policy. And she just comes off as a lady with a lot of class. Those are good things imho.

I want some of what Morris is on. There is no way I would vote for any woman to lead our country. I am one, and I can assure you that we are all way too emotional to be commander in chief.

Actually, she has been asked this question. To date, her answer has always been emphatic - "I'm not interested"

I've heard her say she wants to head the NFL.....

Didn't Morris predict Kerry would win in 2004. I take Morris with a grain of salt. He's been wrong more often than anyone when it comes to predicting elections. I like Condi - don't get me wrong but she is not interested in the presidency. She did indicate she was interested in the VP position. I guess she's been able to evaluate both positions from where she is and the VP one suits her more.

Yuck.

How about no Condi and no one associated with Bush in 2008?

George Allen would be nice.

Kind of short changing your gender aren't you? Maggie Thatcher did an excellent job and I am sure there are others that can also. One thing about women they CAN be ruthless when they have an agenda.

Morris forgets that today's U.S. Presidency is NOT an entry level political office. Condi's never been elected to anything...not even school board. So scratch her. Hillary Rodham's political career is a benefit of the accident of marriage. Take away her last name and she is just another lawyer.
