The New York Times printed a column by Maureen Dowd pointing out that Bush had opened the door to questions about his personal life by emphasizing his marital fidelity.

Ms. Dowd said, "It's hard to believe he would be so coy about cocaine." She wrote, "if he could just say, in a simple declarative sentence, he had never tried it."

I think Ms Dowd is correct, if GWB could've denied ever using coke he would've. Instead GWB takes the tack of declaring that his refusal to answer such questions is morally superior. It wasn't morally superior, it was a coverup of a moral lapse.

That's it? You infer guilt from the refusal to entertain intrusive questions where answering such questions would have invariably led to other, endless intrusive questions on other areas (pre-marital sex)? That is a very low evidentiary standard. If you want to consider indirect evidence, think this over: The Democrats and MSM have been trying to dig something up on this for 8 years and have found nothing. No drug dealers or drug sources or other users or ex-friends have come forward. I have not even heard a single second-hand report of anyone witnessing such conduct. All you need is one person that wants attention or to turn a buck. Despite that: not even one one disgruntled former employee or campaign worker or ex-girlfriend or business partner or pissed-off former friend, waiter or doorman or anyone else has come forward. Intimidation only goes so far. Look at the Clintons and how aggressive they were in keeping the bimbos in the closet. It still leaked out: a big mouthed brother, State Troopers, Dick Morris, Jen Flowers, Lewinsky, etc. I just don't think the Bush people could have suppressed every bit of direct evidence if this rumor was true.
