I hate to rain on ya'lls parade, but when I think of Texas, I think of illegal aliens.

No fair, we are U.S. citizens, though the U.S. seems prouder of it than we do.

To be a real cowboy you'd have to be from Montana or Wyoming.

Where do you think those cows originally came from, Canada?

The best thing to come out of TX is my husband, but I'm a bit prejudiced. I think he did drive out on I-20 though. lol

It was coming through NORTH Louisiana, Mississippi
and Alabama on his way to Georgia that made him the great husband
that he is.

I love my l00 acres in Texas where:

The stars at night,
Are big and bright,
Deep in the heart of Texas,
The prairie sky
Is wide and high,
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The sage in bloom
Is like perfume,
Deep in the heart of Texas,
Reminds me of,
The one I love,
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The coyotes wail,
Along the trail,
Deep in the heart of Texas,
The rabbits rush,
Around the brush,
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The cowboys cry,
"Ki-yip-pee-yi,"
Deep in the heart of Texas,
The dogies bawl,
And bawl and bawl,
Deep in the heart of Texas.

Mine were here before Texas was a Republic

My McGee's came in 1832. Taylors, Eubanks, Williams, Leggets, and Mouton's by the end of the Civil War.

New Mexicans put beans in their chili? For shame.

The New Mexico legislature passed a resolution making the spelling "chile" because the claimed that only Texans put beans in "chili." (Probably an Indian word pronounced "Xjlj" or something like that.)

Texas Is Still Home To Me
(Blakely/Chambers/Gil)

I've rambled many places
Far from the open spaces I call home
From New York out to 'Frisco
Across the Great Divide
I've made friends most everywhere I've gone

But not a day goes by
When I don't dream of those
Big Texas skies
Down many roads I've wandered
But Texas is still home to me

If home is where your heart is
Mine ain't hard to find
Across that old Red River
Inside the Texas line
Rememberin' Bob Wills
A band tonight is playin' Silver Bells
So many miles I am away
But Texas is still home to me

Steel guitars are ringin'
Twin fiddles playin' all night long
In my heart, I hear the music
And I'm dancin' in my mind
As the white lines are leading me home

Hey, just a few more miles
And I'll be home if only for a while
Don't many roads I've wandered
But Texas is still home to me

If home is where your heart is
Mine ain't hard to find
Across that old Red River
Inside the Texas line
Rememberin' Bob Wills
A band tonight is playin' Silver Bells
So many miles I am away
But Texas is still home to me

Ship My Body Back To Texas
(Baxter, Bruce)

Lookin' for some greener grass
I left my Lone Star home
Put my trust in wanderlust
Set out for parts unknown
I tried California,
Where it's summer all the time
But they dug up all the gold in '49

Chorus
Ship my body back to Texas
If I die out on the trail
I'm not picky where you bury me
Just put me in the mail
Lay me down in Cow Town
Where I'll never be alone
Or pushin' up the Rose of San Antone

I headed for Alaska
Where I thought I'd change my luck
But nights are long and cold
And lunch can cost you forty bucks
They're shuttin' down the Motor Town
The folks ain't sittin' pretty
And you can't walk the streets of New York City

Chorus

I spent my last ten dollars
Drinkin' rum down in the Keys
Shipped out on a freighter
I've seen more than Seven Seas
'Cause one square mile of ocean
Looks just like the one next to it
If I could find my way back home I'd do it

Chorus

Plant me in the parking lot
Outside the Astrodome
Or pushin' up the Rose of San Antonio
Pushin' up the Rose of San Antone

Now that you mention it, there definitely is a Texas store in every mall I've been in. Good gifts to send to Yankees. I'm not far from Crawford, and The Yellow Rose Gift Shop there has the best Texas White House Christmas ornaments. I buy them every year to send out of state as gifts (and always keep a few for myself). I Googled to see if they have a website, but couldn't find one. It's one of the best Texas memorabilia shops in the area.

Thanks, basil, for setting the record straight. I still love that song after all these years.

How about a singalong, Texans?

Texas, Our Texas

Texas, our Texas! All hail the mighty state!
Texas, our Texas! So wonderful, so great!
Boldest* and grandest, withstanding every test;
O empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.

CHORUS
God bless you, Texas! And keep you brave and strong.
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.**

Texas, O Texas! Your freeborn single star.
Sends out its radiance to nations near and far.
Emblem of freedom! It sets our hearts aglow.
With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.

Texas, dear Texas! From tyrant grip now free,
Shines forth in splendor your star of destiny!
Mother of heroes! We come your children true.
Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.

*The original lyric was "Largest and grandest" until Alaska became a state. **The recording stops early. The chorus is supposed to be repeated before going on to the next verse.
