Spanish judge orders arrest of three US soldiers
Jerusalem Post ^ | Oct. 19, 2005 | AP

A Spanish judge has issued an international arrest order for three US soldiers whose tank fired at a Baghdad hotel during the war in Iraq, killing a Spanish journalist, a court official said Wednesday.

Jose Couso, who worked for the Spanish television network Telecinco, died April 8, 2003, after the tank crew fired a shell at the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad where many journalists were staying to cover the war.

The Spanish judge said he issued the arrest order because of a lack of judicial cooperation from the United States regarding the case.

US officials insist the soldiers believed they were being shot at when they opened fire.

Frankly, I'm sick and tired of this misplaced idea that "the press" is some sort of sanctified, protected class.

It's a business, however there are constitutional protections against government meddling in that business.

But because someone's a "member of the press," they have no rights or protections greater than any other citizen.

And any citizen who's stupid enough to plant themselves in the middle of a war zone, and claim that they're neutral had better be prepared for the consequences.

Frankly, I have no problems at all with reporters being shot and killed in a war zone, given their "neutrality."

The sad thing is that they claim the protections granted by the military that they demean.

Mark

With friends like Spain, who needs enemies?

Let's remember that "Spain" has not done anything.

A liberal judge in Spain has done something and liberal judges, whether they be in Spain or in the U.S., do all sorts of crazy things every day.

A Texas court on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas

Just a reminder, Kerry & Clinton both supported our entry into the World Court. What a fiasco that would be.

At least these Spaniards didn't have to witness the torment and beheading of one of their journalist.

Spain needs another El Cid.

El Cid was a simple mercenary, who'd work for anybody given the right price. Why exactly dose Spain need another Cid?

Wonder if this moronic "judge" would like it if we responded to his request with a B-52 bombardment of his courthouse.

We are talking about Spain after all. Just set a few firecrackers off in the Madrid transit and they'll cave on this.

FYI. The family of Jose Couso traveled to the US in Setember to be with Cindy Sheehan.

Thanks for that information!

Scum is attracted by scum apparently.

This can all be solved if we would just nuke the whole EU already! First Paris, then Madrid...of course, we'll take our good friend Tony Blair out first.

cuffs him and escorts him on the next flight to Barcelona.

Shortly thereafter, the Barcelona lock-up facility finds its doors being destroyed, and the facility overran by a small team of U.S. Marines from Rota NAS, who are provided full air support from the same facility. Ten or so marines should be able to kick all the butt needed to spring the unfortunate GI.

The whole idea of a Spanish (or any other nationality) judge issuing an arrest warrant for an American GI is ludicrous! I doubt even Spain could find anyone stoopid enough to try and enforce that warrant!

The family came to the US and was sponsored by Amy Goodman.

The family wants compensation from the US. I'm surprised the DoD didn't just pay them off to end this.
