Duncan, according to a report in The San Antonio Express-News, joined the Indiana Pacers' Stephen Jackson with not-so-kind words for commissioner David Stern's dress-up policy.
"I think it's a load of crap," Duncan said. "I understand what they're trying to do with the hats and do-rags and jerseys and stuff. That's fine. But I don't understand why they would take it to this level. I think it's basically retarded.
"I don't like the direction they're going, but who am I?"
Duncan, a two-time NBA MVP and three-time NBA Finals MVP, did not play in Tuesday night's 94-81 exhibition loss to the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse. He wore what The Express-News called his typical injured-list wardrobe: jeans and a dress shirt.
However, an NBA spokesman said Duncan would have to tuck his shirt in once the regular season starts and the policy goes into effect.

Like anyone has to go looking for a reporter to gripe to. If I had a guarenteed contract and some reporter wandered up to me asking what I thought about my jobs over the top dress code code I would tell him what I thought. Reporters are eager to generate comments like this. They know the players don't like the new dress code. Who the Hell does like a dress code? So they set to find a player that's not a afraid to say what they think. The question is how many players did they have to interview before they found some choice comments like "retarded" or Stehphen Jacksons "racist" comment to create a headline from?
I am a Pacers fan but this is not hard to say: Stephen Jackson you are an IDIOT!

Now now now ... lets not say bad things about dress codes.
Oh I agree about the rest of the NBA... they have an image problem. But I can GURANTEE those words would not have come out of Tim's mouth had it not required "Business casual" (aka tucked in)... had they gone after just the rediculous shirts and gawdy chains and stuff... it would have been just fine...

Unless of course you are wearing NBA licensed hats and t-shirts.
My job doesn't have a dresscode, but I still wear a suit and tie to work.
That said, if my company started forcing a dresscode to and from work, yea I would throw a fit.
The dress code for NBA players at work is sneakers, a jersey and shorts.
This is for when they are not working but on the way to work and back or if they injured but appear at the games.
Over the past few years I have had this discussion with friends. We all agree that it is Stern's fault. He let the NBA evolve into the disgusting display it is today. It is so "urban" (read: gangsta) that I have absolutley no interest. The style of basketball they play is one-on-one showboating instead of the graceful team sport it used to be.
After the brawl in Detroit, I vowed that I would never spend another penny on the NBA. I don't watch the games, I don't go to them, etc. I also have boycotted all of the other major professional sports for the same reason.
This dress code is a sad attempt to enhance the league's image, but it's too little, too late. The NBA players are a bunch of thugs and the league's leadership has allowed it to happen.
What if the dress code your boss gave you, was to be applied when you weren't working?
Considering the way players shoot today, maybe they should reconsider selling crack.
Give me a break! These guys are multi-millionaires who represent the league to the paying customers. Nobody is telling them what to wear at home. They are being told that there are minimum standards for appearance when they are on team business. Basically, if there is a chance they're going to be on camera, they need to look professional and not like a bunch of pimps. That includes traveling to and from games, at press confernces and events, etc.
The league has every right to impose that and it's not out of line.
Far from it! I've been a Spurs fan since they first moved to SA from Dallas - back in the good ole ABA. I used to go to a few games back when the Iceman played. Nothing but a Spurs fan here.

That depends on how valuable the job was to me. If I'm getting a ton of money (by anyone's measure) I could expect that I may be required maintain an image that would promote my organization.
If I didn't like it then I could take my talent elsewhere. For someone in the NBA, that's not easy to do. I know that some recording artists as part of their contract must maintain certain 'public appearance standards'.
If your typical 2nd grade school teacher on their own time ran a string bikini hot dog stand. You'd have many people screaming of inappropriateness.
If a person doesn't like the terms they are free to go park cars, become an accountant, run their own business.
If it were me though, I'd dress in the finest suit I could find. But then again I wouldn't pretending to be a thug.
Yeah, I do. So PuhLEEZE chill out. The rules are just that. Want that 11.2 mil this year? Well, guess what? You dress in the manner that your corporation deems best.
The media isn't waiting for you in the parking lot, though. My understanding is that the code is for when they are working.
