ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Six teenagers at West Mesa High School faced charges Friday after a police officer said the students jumped him.
Steven Anzures is a senior at West Mesa. He gets good grades, and he's excited about college. But, Anzures said Albuquerque police officers jumped him, and his younger brother, Ray, while they were at school.
"(The officer) shoved his knee in my face and started scraping it on the pavement," Steven Anzures said.
"He was all bleeding on the side of his face, and his eyes were closed," Ray Anzures said.
The teens said the fight started when some of their friends dropped off some food, which officers mistook for a drug deal.
"I never knew getting lunch from a car is a gang fight," Steven Anzures said.
APD officials said the group in the car has caused problems in the past. An officer told them to leave.
"In doing so, he (the officer) was jumped by a couple of people," said John Walsh of the Albuquerque Police Department.
Diane Anzures said her children have never been in serious trouble, nor would they attack a police officer.
"They're great kids," she said.
The criminal complaint said there were no drugs or weapons found. But it also said the officers were threatened and attacked by the students.
Diane Anzures believes the officer used too much force.
"He abused his authority, and his job, and I don't think he should be working with students," she said. "He should be working at a prison with the big guys."
Just a few months before graduation, Steven Anzures said he now is worried about fighting off a felony charge, instead of keeping up his grades.
Action 7 News tried contacting the school for a comment, but security officials said it was a police matter.
The police department said they followed procedures, and kept a violent situation from escalating.

If the police officer assaulted the two kids when they were doing nothing wrong, that is a felony. The six teenagers, upon witnessing a felony, not only have a right but a responsibility to intervene.Tried that once. Got an "aluminum shampoo", a "Vibram massage" and 30 hours in handcuffs / jail.
I won't do that again.

"
Of course, but you already KNOW what the officer is going to say, so what good does it do to hear it before you leap to conclusions?"
Who knows what he is going to say...
He might say that he told the kid to stop but he ran.
He might say that he saw the same kids smoking pot earlier
He might say he something else that could be crosschecked forensically.
But no matter what he might say everybody has the right to tell their side and if you are arguing that you lose basic rights because you wear a badge then I cannot disagree strongly enough.

Let's just hope there's some video of this incident.
I have the utmost respect for good cops, which is why I have such visceral disdain for bad cops.

My take is that this was an undercover "student" officer...
If so, he obviously can't yell "stop in the name of the law", or his cover would be blown. If he can't identify himself, he can't go around assaulting people. Even if he did see them smoking pot, or for whatever reason.

Gothca.. I assumed a uniformed officer - all their school systems around Atlanta have uniformed officers at each high school.

Oh yes he can, or else people will take him to be mugger attacking someone.

Just to be clear, I didn't say that - I was quoting someone else. I agree with you. A cop can't just attack someone - that's a crime.

See, I wonder about what you define as "serious trouble". As a mom, I can say my kids have never had any contact with the police. Or never had a speeding ticket. But using the phrase serious trouble implies there may have been "non-serious" trouble, whatever that could mean.

Can you really picture six high school students jumping a uniformed officer? Six gang-bangers in LA wouldn't do that.

That's exactly what I was picturing. If I saw a uniformed cop come and attack a friend without provocation I would interfere.

APD officials said the group in the car has caused problems in the past. An officer told them to leave. If this teenager is so pure, why is hanging out with scum in the parking lot? I wonder how many teenagers at West Mesa High are either on drugs or selling them. If the kids in the car are known drug-dealers/gang members, passing "lunch" to their friends on school campus would look exactly like a drug deal. They more than deserve what they get.

"They more than deserve what they get."
I agree... And what they are going to get is a couple hundred thousand in the settlement of the lawsuit they file against the city and the police department.
