Voluntary .xxx Domain "for Responsible Companies" 8/23/2005 1:12:00 PM

Just how responsible can pornographers be?

The latest proposal for new website domains is (dot) xxx, which would theoretically distinguish these websites from others as being pornographic. The Bush administration is objecting to the creation of a dot xxx domain, and Michael Gallagher, assistant secretary at the Commerce Department, has asked for a hold to be placed on the contract to run the new top-level domain until the .xxx suffix can receive further scrutiny.

Gallagher stated, "The Department of Commerce has received nearly 6,000 letters and e-mails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children."

ICM Registry--the for-profit company in Florida that plans to operate the .xxx registry--has told reported that it would agree to a month's delay in the approval process to permit it to "address the concerns" raised by the Bush administration and other governments.

Jason Hendeles, founder of ICM Registry, says, "We're focusing our attention on the Department of Commerce and ensuring that we're building this as a voluntary (top-level domain) for responsible companies."

The big question that looms is: Just how responsible can pornographers be?

Can anyone explain to me why " The Bush administration is objecting to the creation of a dot xxx domain,..."

I know the evils, addictions, and just the plain ole degredation of humanity that pornography promotes. I do not understand why isolating pornography into its own domain on the web would be a bad thing. As I understand, it would make it easier for me to block out the use of my computer for my children to accidentally or even purposly visit a pornographic site.

I support Bush, always have supported him and his administration and most likely always will. Any comments on why they would not support domain would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I think an xxx domain is a good idea too.

Not of much consequence. Apparently, http is still the only internet protocol the government has heard of. Probably just as well.

.xxx is a good idea - illegitimate websites would not be able to use that domain.

Plainly labeling pornographic sites has to be a good thing. Does anyone really think it's hard to find porn on the internet?

Put it in one place, clearly labeled for what it is and it may improve firewall protection as well.

I don't know but I am volunteering to review all .xxx sites just to make sure they belong there

I think the objection is based on the "voluntary" notion.

If xxx can be easily blocked then the perveyors will not be able to easily get misdirected traffic (ie whitehouse.com vs whitehouse.gov)

There is no incentive to have this actually used.

No, that would be the FREEDOM OF SPEECH should be free. Go tell the pornographic companies that they should let you view all their material for free and see what they give you.

Read our constitution Khpera, it truly is an amazing document that can teach us all about what freedom is.

My friends daughter was looking for an asian cartoon character a while back. She found plenty and announced that people everywhere are disgusting.

"I do not understand why isolating pornography into its own domain on the web would be a bad thing."

It provides cover to the pornographers, just as the voluntary MPAA rating scale did for moviemakers.

They'd be free to produce any kind of garbage and, as long as it's rated properly, be free to market it.

My bad Khepera. After reading your post again I realized that it was geared more towards humor / sarcasm rather than an ignorant statement. Sorry about that. To paraphrase scripture, I should be quick to read, and slow to reply.

Sorry again

It is, but you have to make it yourself ...

The male of the scene has to be able to stand up to the pressure ...
