Paris - The mayor of a tough Paris suburb near the epicentre of the urban violence raging across France declared an "exceptional curfew" on his municipality starting on Monday night.
The curfew, decided by conservative mayor Eric Raoult of the northeast suburb of Raincy, was the first to be imposed in France since rioting broke out in the neighbouring suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois on October 27.
Scary....intifada....how long until all of Europe awakes from their blind stupor....
What has FEMA been doing? Why didn't they come in a week ago? (/sarcasm)
Thanks. It certainly can't be the "youths" they will keep off the streets.
You're being paranoid. Chirac isn't conservative by US (or UK) standards, but his party is routinely considered the conservative party in France, and is referred to that way in the French press.
Since Sarkozy and this mayor are the only ones to promote anything >remotely< effective, I don't see why you should mind them being called conservative.
"It only took him 12 days. Is there a pool on when the surrender is?"
In looking at the odds, based on common knowledge and historical reference, I have it as 65-1 that France surrenders in some way before Thanksgiving.
At this time, the exact nature of the surrender is not known.
Ironic that "curfew" has its origin in a French expression that means "covering of the fire." I bet . . .
One 'strongly-worded condemnation' should be enough I think.
conservative mayor Eric Raoult of the northeast suburb of RaincyI think not.
Sorry, the imams have issued a fatwah against any curfews.
Jeez louise, it took him long enough.
If you don't stop rioting, we will have to tell you again to stop!
As I write this, it's shortly before 7:00 PM in France. Does anyone have updated information as of yet?
That's the best line so far. That's great. Sitting here cackling over that one.
Agreed! Post of the day!
Yeah okay, I can see it now - - one rioting teenager turns to the other and says, "Hurry! We still have time to torch 20 cars and a police station before curfew!"
Have I read somewhere that Iran has said they will not standby if violent means are used on the muslim "youths"? What does that foretell?
I am educated daily by getting "all of my news" from Free Republic. Thanks to all.
I understand where they fall idealogically in relation to our parties. I don't think for a minute that I'm being paranoid. Only conservatives are identified by party as a general rule and I don't think most folks in the US understand the distinction. There is an effort to lay this at the feet of Sarkozy. The AP story included the insinuation that his reference to the rioters as 'scum' was the reason for the escalation. They are giving the Muslim community and Chirac a fairly easy time considering what Bush went through with Katrina. I don't think it's paranoid to think the MSM will try to frame this to reflect negatively on conservatives given their track record.
Whew! It's about time someone decided to take some action. Now things will settle down. Right? Right?
