House Republicans Seek Quick Veto of One Democrat's Proposal to End Troops' Deployment in Iraq
Associated Press ^ | November 18, 2005 | Liz Sidoti

House Republicans maneuvered for swift and overwhelming rejection Friday of a Democratic lawmaker's call for U.S. troops to be pulled out of Iraq.

Furious, Democrats accused the GOP of orchestrating a political stunt by leaving little time for debate and by taking the heart out of the resolution offered by Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania.

For those reasons, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sent word to the rank-and-file to vote - with the Republicans - against immediate withdrawal of American troops.

Little time for debate?! They've been making these "arguments" for years now.

The lefties are trying to squirm out of this one; they definitely don't want to be pinned down to an actual position. Pelosi is trying to get the House Dems to collectively dodge the bullet, rather than put up or shut up.

The fiery, emotional debate climaxed when Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, the most junior member of the House, told of a phone call she received from a Marine colonel.

"He asked me to send Congress a message - stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message - that cowards cut and run, Marines never do," Schmidt said.

Democrats booed and shouted her down - causing the House to come to a standstill.

Hmm.....looking at DU and KOS, looks like the counter-argument is going to be that "Hunter's Bill isn't the same thing as Murtha's."

They don't want to "get out of Iraq right now" they want to "redeploy."

Boy! I just heard a Republican Congesswoman from, I believe, Michigan, read a quote from a marine in Michigan and he, the marine, called Murtha a coward! The house went nuts! But, she and he was and is right!

The Republicans presented a resolution that essentially says "We want to leave Irag right this second." No one is going to vote yes to that.

That isn't brave, it's just a blatant misstatement of Murtha's proposal.

Why is no one disgusted by these politics? Putting up a resolution you don't agree with only to vote against it, pretending that it is the position your opponents are taking (when none of them agree with it, of course).

If the congress is going to pull the plug on the Iraq war, it's time to say so now. Are the Dems going to get a third chance (and this will be the third they have voted to support the President--look it up) to vote the war down, vote for it, and once again say (with much success)that they are against it?

When did anyone find out about this vote? I didn't until Sean Hannity talked about it today - have been on the phone around the country ever since.

How did it ever come to this?

I love our troops; I support our troops and I believe in this President. How the enemy must be laughing and praying a Democrat is elected next time then they can have a field day picking us off a little here and a little there until there is no Republic left.

NO TO HILLERY!!!!!

This IS politics. If the DIMS don't want to get out now than should we tell the terrorists when we would be willing to leave?? That's the VietNam quagmire!!! I say if we quit and run, do it NOW before we sacrifice more good men for the sake of worthless politicians and the anti-American left. And by-the-way, go our and buy some personal protection. You're going to need it of we leave Iraq now.

This is exactly what Sean Hannity demanded last
night on his programL: 'REPUBLICANS...go for an
immediate vote TOMORROW on this pullout of Iraq
deal. Make every Senator declare in front of God
and the nation just where he/she stands on the issue.'

Guess where I'll have my eyes/ears tonight!

The "earliest practicable date" does not neccessarily mean "immediate."

Oh man, I hate when Congress plays lame politics. That must make a Democrat from DU! You sure pinned me, boss. (Registered Indie, if you're curious).

This is not the Murtha proposal. IT is a strawman. This is not a victory for anyone, it's just sad.

" We are giving back what they serve us all the time."

- No matter how this plays out in the vote tonight, I think it's clear that this maneuver by the Republicans has put a major crimp in what has been shaping up to be a long term, coordinated, MSM/ Dem strategy to erode support for the President and the war.
Ever since their success with the Sheehan story, the media has grown increasingly confident that they have regained their hold on public opinion. The Dems, sensing their support, have grown increasingly vocal and radical in their attacks - knowing that the MSM will support and megaphone anything they do.
By forcing out this vote, the Dems will think twice before reactivating their policy of shrill attacks.

If that brave lady congressperson's words didn't threaten the saddamites, they wouldn't be up in arms.

They KNOW this has the potential to come back and bite them in the ass in a BIG way during next years elections.

That is, if we go after them the right way.
