Why Blacks Should Stay in Africa

Why blacks should stay in Africa.

by Constant Sabang in "Le Quotidien Mutations"

Africans dreaming of a better life shouldn’t look to America, said Constant Sabang in Yaounde’s Le Quotidien Mutations. Every year when the U.S. visa lottery comes around, thousands of Africans, among them many Cameroonians, apply for a chance to “become a nephew of Uncle Sam.” A few of them even win one of the coveted green cards allotted to African countries. But what do they find when they leave Cameroon? They have given up their national identity, not to mention their passports, to become second-class citizens. For black people, America is “not the land of opportunity.” Jobs, if they can be found, are of the most menial kind, and people with dark skin are still outsiders. Those images we saw on TV recently of inundated Louisiana and Mississippi present the true picture of America, not the glossy “Hollywood superproductions or promotional videos” that capture our imaginations. The footage of black people crying on the roofs of their shacks might as well have come from Niger or Sudan. For all its great wealth and power, the U.S. is at bottom a Darwinian society. It is “a jungle, where the strong feed off the weak.”

With a labor shortage in many parts of the country, I'd say any black that can get to the US with a reasonable ability to speak English and a marketable job skill would do just fine. I know our business would hire skilled machinists right now no matter where they're from.

The real reason these people become second-class citizens is that most of them have nothing to offer. It's ot ther fault, and it's not because they're black. A white man from Bosnia with no skills and the average educatoin of a black man from Cameroon wouldn't do well either.

the U.S. is at bottom a Darwinian society.

All societies are Darwinian. It is the nature of man. Working for the 'common good' in Cuba, Venezuela, etc. is nothing more than a means for one group to stay in power at the expense of others.

Making this a race issue, like the author of the article, is ludicrous. No opportunities for blacks in the U.S.? Hmmmm. Guess Jamie Foxx, Oprah Winfrey, Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Vernon Jordan, Shaq et al. must be Oreos. /sarc

Black immigrants are not struggling in America - it is only the native born blacks. Liberals have been mocking conservatives for decades about the conservative claim that welfare leads to dependency and broken families, but the relative success of black immigrants is a powerful testimonial otherwise.

I agree with all you say. The world is a marketplace and you barter with what you have. However, 2nd class here is better than first class in many parts of the world.

Regardless of where they come from, the issue is one of how they 'arrive.' If someone, from anywhere, comes to the US thinking that once they cross the border (legally) all their problems will be solved and everything will fall into place, then they will fail. If they come with the thought that their success is dependent on them, then they will most likely find great success.

"A white man from Bosnia with no skills and the average educatoin of a black man from Cameroon wouldn't do well either." This is a Fact.

No way, I bet if the whole 9th Ward in NO or even parts of Detroit went to Africa, they would be welcomed with open arms, and would do much better than here being oppressed by the white man. I say start packing, its time for a boat ride.

This reflects a French colonial point of view.

It's true. There is enormous resentment for Caribbean and African blacks who come to America and kick ass economically through--ta-da!-HARD WORK. What a concept.

Yeah, they're not nearly as good as the jobs the Cameroonians had back in the Old Country: lion bait, spear catcher, fly agar ... Do I hear someone boo-hooing because a group of immigrants just off the boat aren't made CEOs of America's top corporations? Now THERE'S a realistic expectation! And by the way, who ever promised anyone that America was the express route to Paradise anyway? It's a land of OPPORTUNITY, not GUARANTEES.

Those images we saw on TV recently of inundated Louisiana and Mississippi present the true picture of America

The true picture of America after the worst hurricane in half a century! How much better would Cameroon fare if it got walloped by Katrina? Spare me the false equivalency.

This author is either misinformed or an idiot (or both).

Immigrant blacks from Africa were not the ones he saw in Louisiana. Those were native born blacks -- ones who have been brainwashed into a life of dependency by the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan, the liberal Democrats, et. al.

Immigrant blacks from the Carribean, Africa, and other parts of the world, for the most part, do fine here in America.

As one who works extensively with African immigrants, I can tell you that this article is total rubbish.

The folks I know from Ghana, Mali, & other African countries are immensely hard working & appreciative of this country.

They are great achievers & they love this country & the opportunity it has given them.

Disregard the idiocy written in this article.

yet another puff piece of liberal propaganda. The fact is that most recent African immigrants end up doing better than so-called native blacks now and better than most native whites in the second generation

Some intersting stats about Cameroon:

Population (millions) 15.5
Literacy rate 73.5
Gross national income per capita 560
TVs per 1000 people 34
Radios per 1000 people 163
Telephone mainlines per 1000 people 7
Mobile phones per 1000 people 20
Personal computers per 1000 people 3.9
Internet users (thousands) 45

I don’t know who this Constant Sabang babe is, but my guess is she is a real U.S. hater.

I never did believed in the lottery system as a way to arrive to our shores. My question is, can anybody apply or does the person applying need to have a marketable skill? When this started, I was too disgusted to give it any attention. Now I regret it.

Thank you.
