Israel readies forces for strike on nuclear Iran
The Sunday Times ^ | December 11, 2005 | Uzi Mahnaimi, Tel Aviv, and Sarah Baxter, Washington

Posted on 12/10/2005 6:48:44 PM PST by rhainw

ISRAEL’S armed forces have been ordered by Ariel Sharon, the prime minister, to be ready by the end of March for possible strikes on secret uranium enrichment sites in Iran, military sources have revealed. The order came after Israeli intelligence warned the government that Iran was operating enrichment facilities, believed to be small and concealed in civilian locations.

Iran’s stand-off with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over nuclear inspections and aggressive rhetoric from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, who said last week that Israel should be moved to Europe, are causing mounting concern.

The crisis is set to come to a head in early March, when Mohamed El-Baradei, the head of the IAEA, will present his next report on Iran. El-Baradei, who received the Nobel peace prize yesterday, warned that the world was “losing patience” with Iran.

A senior White House source said the threat of a nuclear Iran was moving to the top of the international agenda and the issue now was: “What next?” That question would have to be answered in the next few months, he said.

Defence sources in Israel believe the end of March to be the “point of no return” after which Iran will have the technical expertise to enrich uranium in sufficient quantities to build a nuclear warhead in two to four years.

“Israel — and not only Israel — cannot accept a nuclear Iran,” Sharon warned recently. “We have the ability to deal with this and we’re making all the necessary preparations to be ready for such a situation.”

The order to prepare for a possible attack went through the Israeli defence ministry to the chief of staff. Sources inside special forces command confirmed that “G” readiness — the highest stage — for an operation was announced last week.

Gholamreza Aghazadeah, head of the Atomic Organisation of Iran, warned yesterday that his country would produce nuclear fuel. “There is no doubt that we have to carry out uranium enrichment,” he said.

He promised it would not be done during forthcoming talks with European negotiators. But although Iran insists it wants only nuclear energy, Israeli intelligence has concluded it is deceiving the world and has no intention of giving up what it believes is its right to develop nuclear weapons.

A “massive” Israeli intelligence operation has been underway since Iran was designated the “top priority for 2005”, according to security sources.

Cross-border operations and signal intelligence from a base established by the Israelis in northern Iraq are said to have identified a number of Iranian uranium enrichment sites unknown to the the IAEA.

Since Israel destroyed the Osirak nuclear reactor in Iraq in 1981, “it has been understood that the lesson is, don’t have one site, have 50 sites”, a White House source said.

If a military operation is approved, Israel will use air and ground forces against several nuclear targets in the hope of stalling Tehran’s nuclear programme for years, according to Israeli military sources.

It is believed Israel would call on its top special forces brigade, Unit 262 — the equivalent of the SAS — and the F-15I strategic 69 Squadron, which can strike Iran and return to Israel without refuelling.

Considering that Iran is the world's main sponsor of Islamic terrorism including support for violence against our troops in Iraq, it's time for the U.S. to step up support for any and all resistance groups in Iran. This should include money, arms and technical assistance. We should also employ regional mercenaries to aid in the struggle against this totalitarian theocracy. It's time to bring the war and terror to the puppet masters of the terrorists.

This is probably just to gauge what the Iranian reaction will be. Their new President has show that he is flippant of tonge. Feed the media some info knowing it will get to the enemy and watch and listen. Note all the un-named sources in the story. Sharon simply stated the obvious...We're getting ready. You knew that. Israel does not play (except with their enemies minds)...they can't afford to.

1] Any "strike" that is not a tactical nuclear strike would yield little. No conventional strike can do much good.

2] Any article that does not mention the role Russia plays in aiding Israel is void of worthiness as a serious commentary or factual report. You can not take Russia out of the equation when it comes to discussing options on what to do. This article never mentioned Russia, and thus is a worthless article.

Unless Iran is going to call Mayflower and move, the plan has problems.
As good as the Israelis might be, airplanes still need gas and, unless they can go to the UNCLE SAM`s all service gas station, this whole thing is not going to happen. But, if we do it, and we would do a better job then the Israelis, got to be all for it.
Half the problems in Iraq are coming from Iran (the other half is from the DNC)and, don`t we still owe the mullahs a little payback?

Yeah I figured that's what you meant.

I still think Russia is Gog of Ezekiel 38:5. (that's not to berate the average Russian citizen of course - just that some bad dudes have been in charge over there, like Stalin). Flavius Josephus says the descendents of Magog settled north of the Black Sea. And low and behold, there is Iran in Ezekiel 38:5 attacking Israel. And Libya is mentioned and now we find there are Iranian-Libyan links. Ethiopia, which had a lot of Christians (and Jews who emigrated to Israel) is also mentioned, and now they are preparing for war against Eritrea, again. So war footing might not be all that unusual for them too, though, for the life of me I can't figure out why they'd move against Israel. Unless the muslims from the Sudan gain control there.

Iran and Libya, well, it's obvious.

Yeah that one I've had trouble with, just a bit, placing it in the scheme of things. Now Syria and Egypt (amazingly) come against the Antichrist at the Time of the End, sometime during the Great Tribulation. (See Daniel's note on King of the North and King of the South). Probably not to help Israel, per se, but maybe out of their own interests. So I can't figure out who makes Damascus the ruinous heap.

But yeah, Syria is a terrorist state and firmly allied with Iran. It might be possible they are in the Ezekiel 38:5 equation. Some call Togarmah as Turkey. I don't know if Turkey is inclined towards attacking Israel, but they are a mainly muslim state, of such rule, and of course, they have the hadiths where mohammed told them they would destroy the Jews at the Last Hour (hadith sahih bukhari 4:52:176-177, 4:56:791, hadith sahih muslim 41:6981-6985).

Israeli national security strategy is founded on the premise that Israel cannot afford to lose a single war. Because the best way to avoid losing a war is to not fight it in the first place, Israeli strategy begins with the maintenance of a credible deterrent posture, which includes the willingness to carry out preemptive strikes. Should deterrence fail, Israel would seek to prevent escalation, and determine the outcome of war quickly and decisively. Since it lacks strategic depth, Israel must prevent the enemy from entering its territory, and must try to quickly transfer the battle to enemy territory.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/israel/iran.htm

In May 2003, Ephraim Asculai, a former Israeli Atomic Energy Comission official, in an article written for the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies, wrote that "nuclear verification is clearly failing in Iran, when (the IAEA) let Iran proceed with its ambitious program. In any case, it would be unable to deter or stop its development of nuclear weapons. The verification mechanisms will fail by not being able to prove anything, since intentions, particularly when based on legal actions, are unverifiable."

The annual intelligence assessment presented to Israel's Knesset on 21 July 2004 noted that Iran's nuclear program is the biggest threat facing Israel, "Maariv" and "Yediot Aharonot" reported on 22 July 2004. Some Likud and Labor Knesset members subsequently called for a preemptive strike against the Iranian nuclear facility. Former Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh (Labor) said, "If the international community's helplessness in the face of the Iranian threat persists, Israel will have to weigh its steps -- and soon." Ehud Yatom (Likud) said, "The Iranian nuclear facilities must be destroyed, just as we did the Iraqi reactor. We must strive to attain the ability to damage and destroy any nuclear capability that might be directed against Israel." On 08 September 2004 Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said the international community has not done enough to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and warns that Israel will take its own measures to defend itself. He also said Iranian officials have made it clear they seek the destruction of the Jewish state. Israeli Air Force pilots have been practicing attacks on a scale model of the Bushehr reactor in the Negev Desert.

In October 2004 Ephraim Kam, the deputy head of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies said that "It would be a complicated operation. In order to undermine or disrupt the Iranian nuclear program, you would have to strike at least three or four sites ... Otherwise the damage would be too limited, and it would not postpone the program by more than a year or two, and this could in the end be worse than doing nothing." Shai Feldman, also at the Jaffee Center, said "There is a logic to operating against Iran even if the location of every facility is not known, because just taking out the facilities that are known, especially if they include the enrichment and heavy water plants, would in itself create a serious degradation of the Iranian potential."

The Israeli Air Force received the first two of 25 F-15I [I for Israel, no Iran] Ra’am (Thunder) aircraft, the Israeli version of the F-15E Strike Eagle, in January 1998, and as of early 2004 had an inventory of 25 aircraft. According to the Israeli Air Force, this aircraft has a range of 4,450 km, which equates to a combat radius of 2,225 km. Deliveries of the F-16I Sufa (Storm) began in early 2004. This heavily modified aircraft, with massive conformal fuel tanks, has a reported combat radius of 2,100 km. Probable strike targets such as Bushehr and Esfahan lie about 1,500 km from Israel.

The 2,060-km strike on the Palestine Liberation Organization's headquarters in Tunis in October 1985, in retaliation for the murder of three Israelis on a yacht in Cyprus, was the IAF's furthest attack from home to date. The F-16s which bombed the Iraqi reactor in 1981 were not refueled and returned home on their last drops of fuel.

On 21 September 2004 Israel acknowledged that it was buying 500 BLU-109 bunker-buster bombs, which could be used to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities. The bombs, which can penetrate more than 7 feet of reinforced concrete, are part of a $319 million package of air-launched bombs being sold to Israel under America's military aid program.

The German magazine Der Spiegel reported in October 2004 that Israel had completed plans for a pre-emptive strike against Iran's nuclear facilities. Der Spiegel reported that a special unit of the Mossad had received order in July 2004 to prepare a detailed plan, which had been delivered to the Israeli Air Force. The source for the report, an IAF pilot, said the plan to take out Iran's nuclear sites was "complex, yet manageable." Israel's plan assumes that Iran has six nuclear sites, all of which would be attacked simultaneously.

It would be difficult for Israel to strike at Iran without American knowledge, since the mission would have to be flown through American [formerly Iraqi] air space. Even if the United States did not actively participate with operations inside Iranian air space, the US would be a passive participant by virtue of allowing Israeli aircraft unhindered passage. In the eyes of the world, it would generally appear to be a joint US-Israeli enterprise, any denials notwithstanding. Indeed, it is quite probable that Iran would not be able to readily determine the ultimate origins of the strike, given Iran's relatively modest air defense capabilities. Thus, even if the strike were entirely of American origin, Israel would be implicated. When asked in August 2004 about Israeli threats to attack Iran, Bush's national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, declined to say whether the United States would support such action by Israel.

In an 08 September 2004 interview in the "Jerusalem Post" newspaper, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says the international community has not done enough to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and warns that Israel will take its own measures to defend itself. Sharon said there was no doubt that Iran is trying to obtain nuclear weapons and is doing so by "deception and subterfuge." He said international efforts to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions had not been sufficient. Sharon calls for increased pressure and supervision of Iran's nuclear program and said the issue should be brought before the UN Security Council for sanctions to be levied against Tehran. Sharon said Israel would take steps to defend itself against the Iranian threat. He did not elaborate.

Even though the uranium facility at Natanz has been buried underground, it remains vulnerable. As Lieutenant Colonel Eric M. Sepp noted, "The "cut-and-cover" facilities are constructed by digging a hole, inserting a facility, and then covering it up with dirt and rocks. These cut-and-cover facilities can be just below the surface of the ground or may reach a depth of perhaps 100 feet, and represent the vast majority of underground facilities today. In the case of contemporary cut-and-cover facilities, there is no question that conventional munitions can defeat them."

The air strikes option does have the same problems that one would face in North Korea, namely that Iran has a rather significant air defense capability which could complicate use plans. However, unlike North Korea, Iran is not in a position to hold US soldiers or allied civilian populations (Iraq) hostage. A full-scale Iranian military retaliation, though possible, is highly unlikely, especially with the significant US force presence in Iraq. It is possible that Iran could use its ballistic missiles to strike US or allied targets throughout the Persian Gulf region, and in fact Iranian officials have explicitly promised to do just that.

Also, I've noticed some of the "announcements" have come from the Iranian embassy in Moscow, which cannot be a coincidence but obviously meant to send a "subtle" message to Israel.

I have also read that the Russians have sold the S-300/400 systems to Iran which are very sophisticated SAM's. Very dangerous to regular aircraft and they would have to be destroyed first.

Here's the mobile S-300

I have also read that the Russians have sold the S-300/400 systems to Iran which are very sophisticated SAM's.

And we will sell the countermeasures to the Israells's. This gives both sides the chance to test under actual field conditions. "Don't cha just love it..."

Yes I have believed for some time that is the most likely result of the rebuffs.

Man I would hate to go up against them. The Russians have always made very capable SAM's. But there are ways, as the Israelis learned in the Bekka Valley against the Syrians.

Oh that's ok then, a guy on an internet bulletin board says they won't have any, so it must be true, and for six months, so we've got lots of time.

Being that:

* Iran can control the Straight of Hormuz
* that Russia has built Iran's major nuclear facilities
* Russia is selling SAMs to defend Iran
* that Russia is protecting Iran diplomatically
* that Russian nuclear engineers are aiding Iran in the training of nuclear technology
* the Straight of Hormuz is the most strategic point in the Middle East economically and militarily
* that it is clear Russia is using Iran as a proxy state for Russian force projection . . .

Then, be it resolved that the USA will respond . . .

a) by giving another $15 billion to Africa to maintain female genital mutilation

b) Take up Senator Santorum's request to give a fixed % of GDP to global charity

c) Issue $2000 debit cards as Christmas presents to welfare groupies from New Orleans, currently hanging out at FEMA paid Holiday Inns
