What Hppened to the Boomers
AZ Republic via Golden Carp Awards ^ | December 11, 2005 | Letter to editor

Posted on 12/11/2005 11:43:48 AM PST by PolishProud

The following are excepts paraphrased from a letter published in the Arizona Republic titled "What happened to the boomers?"

"As a liberal and educated 20-something, I often wonder what happened to the boomers of my parent's generation... I have met so few boomers that have held fast to the values of peace, love and harmony...

I see a generation that has sold its soul to corporations (only to have pensions later cut), lent itself to a new form of religious extremism, elected a slew of national leaders who care little for the middle class, and engaged in a war that most of my peers want nothing to do with"...

If John Lennon had lived, he'd be disappointed. Signed WW

Answer: As the old saying goes, "Show me a young Conservative, and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal, and I'll show you someone with no brains."

The letter tells us a lot about the writer. He is a Democrat closer to 20 than 30, perhaps a student, or teacher, or government worker or an attorney. And he's opining from a false premise. The image of the "boomer" as seen on the TV screens of the 60s was the product of the media -- only a small percentage of our generation walked the streets of Haight-Ashbury, danced naked at Wood Stock and stuck flowers in rifle barrels.

He's right- Lennon would be disppointed - but VERY RICH.

We boomers wised up, got smarter and realised liberalism is a load of crap. Further we learned that sometimes you have to kill the bad guys.

Maybe because more of them went to 'Nam or went to class instead of protesting.

"As a liberal and educated (LOL!) 20-something,..."

He can't be too damn "educated" if he has never heard of 09-11-01. I recommend he try to get a little more remedial "education" somewhere. He sounds like just another "educated" young skull full of mush to me. A real bonehead.

Who cares what John Lennon would have thought? This guy should realize he's lucky not to be speaking Russian right now.

John Lennon was an ass. Gifted musically, but a misguided ass.

"and engaged in a war that most of my peers want nothing to do with"... "

If Sept 11th didnt wake you and your peers up then your generation is worse off than ours.

But indeed there are many young brave men your age fighting for freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe you should dump your bed weeting friends and find some with balls.

If John Lennon had lived, I suspect he'd have a lot of shares in Google, Apple and Ebay. He'd also be driving a hard bargain with Steve Jobs to put his music on iTunes.

Most found that after the "glory" days of the late sixties and early seventies that real life existed and under Carter it was not pretty.
There is no peace with surrender, love and harmony gave way to malaise and the depressing feeling of defeat.

President Reagan showed that America can have true peace, love and harmony through strength, faith in God and hard work.
Libs will never understand this and despite political success here and there will never achieve the greatness that America holds.

I would venture a wild guess that the writer is Barbara Striesand pretending to be a 20 something and educated. No one is angrier at boomers for electing Republicans than commie boomers pretending to speak for "youth". : )

John Lennon was an ass. Gifted musically, but a misguided ass.

I think many of the Beatles grew up in a relatively conservative Liverpool. The young Lennon supposedly was a brawler, and broke ribs on a few occasions.

The song "Taxman" comes to mind.

But I think the crowd the Beatles ended up with when they got famous were way out on left field, and Lennon was probably more influenced than the rest because of Yoko, a true artsy-fartsy idiot. Someone you spend your life with can often be a huge influence on your politics.

We grew up and realized that these are values that we could instill in our families and personal lives and didn't need some grubby socialist agitators or any government to tell us how.

If Lennon had lived,he'd be worth ten billion today rather than the one billion he was worth on the day he died.

I see a generation that has sold its soul to corporations (only to have pensions later cut), lent itself to a new form of religious extremism,

We gave birth to your generation, then we got religion and corporate jobs so we could put a Nintendo under the Christmas tree for YOU my dear child. Would you rather have had a homemade tie-dye shirt from groovy atheist parents living on the commune?

There were at least two or more strains of boomers. I was from the western/southern bunch that swilled beer and listened to Southern Rock. Yeah, I ended up in AA too. Got a sixteen year sober chip recently.

I used to teach college, and when doing sociology would point out the wanton wildness of my generation. The students would all tell me their parents never participated in "sex, drugs, and rock and roll."

It wasn't for me to tell them, but I had gone to high school with half the kids' parents in the room. They'd have been shocked, I tell ya.

This bonehead should understand that a lot of his 20-something peers enlisted and the service and are fighting a war. Is this jerk related to Jean Effin sKerry?

Excellent response! Thanks.

I do recall the MSM of the 1960's fawning attitude toward the few that the young clown feeeeeeeeels were the many.

To this day the fewer still "stuck on stupid" actually believe that they are, as the MSM described them, the most intelligent generation that America ever produced. Many are employees of the MSM now.

Actually the saying is:

"To be 20 and not be a socialist is to have no heart;

To be thirty and still be a socialist is to have no brain."
