Chinese Defense Today ^ | 2005 Dec 4

Like the U.S. C-130 Hercules, the Shaanxi Y-8 four-engine turboprop transport aircraft has been developed into many special purposes variants. The PLA Air Force was known to be have been using the Y-8 for special electronic warfare (EW) missions including electronic intelligence (ELINT) and offensive electronic countermeasures (ECM) in the past, but little was known about these programme until an electronic warfare variant Y-8 was first spotted in operation in Summer 2004.

While detailed information regarding the onboard mission equipment is not available, it is believed that the new EW/ELINT variant Y-8 is equipped with an extensive array of sophisticated intelligence gathering equipment to monitor enemy electronic activities. The aircraft may also be capable of launching offensive jamming against enemy communications and radar systems.

I've heard that the one of the first photo of Chinese Y-8 Electronic Warfare aircraft was revealed on this site. The site also suggests that one of the Electronic Warfare of the US Armed Force that has crashed and landed on Chinese air strip for emergency contributed to this Y-8. This is really concerning.

Been there, done that...

I see plenty of EW 'stuff' but not much ELINT stuff hanging off of it.

Nor external fuel tanks. How long can it stay on orbit?

Nope - Made by Ronco, batteries not included...

great point... They can get it from the government and Popular Science, haha.

I remember the days when we round-robined into Japan... When we took off, you could almost hear all the cameras clicking as we flew overhead. At the end of the runway just outside the base, there would litteraly be dozens of cameras on tripods with huge telephoto lens aimed at us.

And we were put in their newspapers just like this chineese bird and ID'd the same way.

The front half is Russian.
The back half is Hercules.
What else did they steal that they don't understand?

Hi FreedomCalls:

Looks like it'll make a fine target for a Sidewinder or 20mm cannon.

Doesn't look all that fast. Does the PRC have enough fighters to protect it???

Without falling out of the sky, I mean.

Jack.

I used to fly on the EC-130H out of Davis-Monthan. Our squadron motto in the Saudi desert was "Jam Until Impact". The Chinese knock-off will be target practice if used on the US.
