Islamist state in Europe?

By Jeffrey T. Kuhner

Published December 18, 2005

The Bush administration has decided to get involved in another dangerous nation-building project -- in the volatile Balkans.

More ominously, the effects of this intervention will lay the groundwork for an Islamist state in the heart of Europe.

Recently, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the leaders of Bosnia's three main groups -- Muslims, Serbs and Croats -- met in Washington to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Dayton Accords, which ended Europe's worst bloodletting since 1945. The administration should have limited itself to a symbolic remembrance. Instead, it pressured Bosnia's political representatives to sign an agreement demanding constitutional reforms by early next year. The plan seeks to establish a centralized, unitary republic dominated by a strong government in Sarajevo. The ultimate goal is to forge a more cohesive state that will finally eradicate the country's ethnic divisions. Bosnia's current political system, with its rotating tripartite presidency, parallel administrations and vast bureaucracy, is neither rational nor efficient. Reform is needed. The American-backed plan, however, is a recipe for disaster. It is a form of radical social engineering that will have to be imposed against the wishes of the country's Serb and Croat populations.

More importantly, it will pave the way for potentially turning Bosnia into Europe's first Islamic republic. This will destabilize not only the Balkans, but the entire European continent.

Unless le muzz in Frogville succeed in forming their own nation in France. However, doubt that it would be a republic.

How do you get an islamist state from a nation that's 44% Muslim?

Answer: You don't, except in the fantasies of those who hate Bosnian Muslims (who are the least Islamic Muslims on Earth).

The whole point of keeping Bosnia in one piece was to keep there from being an Islamic-dominated rump state to begin with. We've succeeded to that end.

The Serbs and the Croats who dream of the next war will surely be disappointed. Boo hoo.

Why should anyone insist on keeping a multiethnic, yet highly segregated, Bosnia intact? Why was a truly pluralist and multiethnic Yugoslavia let to slide into the abyss of civil war?

Bosnia should be a federal state with three distinct ethno-religious provinces (Serb, Croat and Muslim). A weak(er) central government will be in charge of monetary policy, customs, foreign affairs, traffic & communications, environment, health and defence. Everything else should be left to the provincial governments. If that doesn't work out, it should be dissolved. There's no third option.

1. Because it's better to have one small state of 3 million people than 3 small states of 1 million people. Besides, Bosnia works as an artificial multiethnic state a lot better than it did as a mindless war zone.

2. Forcing ethnicities to live together is WHAT STATES DO.

3. Yugoslavia was one of two things: either a Serb mini-empire (1919-1941) or a Commie mini-empire (1945-1990). When the commies went away the Serbs tried to make it into a Serb mini-empire again in 1991. When the other ethnicities didn't want to submit, the Serbs ran amuck.

Don't blame the Muslims for that one. This time at least they have grounds for complaint.

1. Because it's better to have one small state of 3 million people than 3 small states of 1 million people.

Bosnia may be small but it is probably the most inefficient state known to political scientists the world over. There's the central gov't in Sarajevo and the Government of Republika Srpska + there are 17 other administrative authorities (the 10 cantons in the Federation and the 7 districts of Republika Srpska) which have about 10 ministries/departments each. All this in a state that's smaller than Maine.

Besides, in the case of dissolution, Herceg-Bosna might join Croatia, and Republika Srpska might join Serbia. So, we won't have three small states with 1M people each.

Besides, Bosnia works as an artificial multiethnic state a lot better than it did as a mindless war zone.

I agree. But the fact that it was an artificial multiethnic state was what caused the war in the first place.

2. Forcing ethnicities to live together is WHAT STATES DO.

It's not what nation-states do. :-) And, anyway, there is little desire among Croats and Serbs in Bosnia to live in a unitary, Muslim-dominated state. Despite the fact that they comprise the majority of population (17.5% and 36%, respectively), the Muslims won't accept anything less than near-absolute control over Bosnia.

Strange, because Serbia was and is the most multiethnic of all the former Yugoslav republics (30% of the population is non-Serb, and some 27 minorities live in Serbia).

Serbia emerged as a victor in WWI and had already been an independent kingdom for 50 years. Serbia was offered the whole of Bosnia and half of Croatia in 1919, but Belgrade refused that, opting instead for a pan-Slavic state (later Yugoslavia). Obviously, the subjugation and domination of other ethnic groups wasn't high on the agenda.

Don't blame the Muslims for that one. This time at least they have grounds for complaint.

They have no right to complain. They unilaterally and unconstitutionally seceded from Yugoslavia in 1992 and refused on more than one occassion different peace plans offered by the EU.

he article:

" During the Bosnian war of 1992-1995, many of the country's Muslims became radicalized. Thousands of foreign Arab fighters, known as the mujahideen, infiltrated into Bosnia in order to wage jihad against Christian Serb and Catholic Croat forces. Iran and Saudi Arabia's influence over the Bosnian Muslim authorities grew as the war ground on. Radical Islam took root in the Balkans."

And the influence grows even today.

Never trust MUSLIM folks who WILLINGLY provided hitler with two divisions of SS to be used to kill CHRISTIANS... the ancestors of the same Serbian Christians they tortured and murdered in the 1990s.

Oh, but in the 1990s the SERBS FOUGHT BACK.

And, that is the real reason the bosnian muslims are so pissed at the SERBS... in the 1990s the SERBS said, "NEVER AGAIN!! AND FOUGHT AS HARD AS THEY COULD TO STOP BOSNIA FROM BECOMING AN ISLAMIC STATE.

Oh, well.. the bosnian muslims are such a silly bunch. A poor little hellhole of a country, with great numbers of unemployed people. Just like their co-religionists in those so-called "palestinian refugee camps".

oh, boo hoo. I mean HAHA!!

Bosnian muslims are such a ridiculous group of numbn--ts.

Can you even imagine the Japs crying foul that the USA was fighting back after the Japs bombed Pearl.

That's what attacked folks do.. they fight back back... IF they have any gumption!!

bosnian muslims are craven NAZI cowards just like they were when they followed their buddy HITLER during WWII.

Oh, how those bosnians want us to forget their leader in the 1990s was a HITLER supporter!!

I was around as a teen, during WWII and my older brothers fought nazis. I loathed the nazis then and NOW!!

Another choice tidbit from the VERY telling article:

"What is most disturbing, however, is the influx of young Bosnian Muslim fighters into Iraq. They are joining the Islamofascist insurgents in their barbaric campaign against U.S. forces. At one of Sarajevo's main mosques, the second highest-ranking cleric in the country, Ismet Spahic, has publicly denounced the U.S.-led war in Iraq as "genocide."

"This small minority of Islamic militants is growing, like a cancer on Bosnia's body politic. Thus far, the U.S., the European Union and the Sarajevo authorities have ignored the problem."

I wonder if that minority of radical MUSLIM bosnians had ancestors in Hitler's BOSNIAN SS ????

The little acorns do not fall from the family tree.

Don't sweat it.

America's pretty much figured out that the Serbs don't matter anymore - their ability to cause trouble to anyone but themselves has been constrained.

As for the Croats, they've still got their lunatic fringe looking to replay 1995 to gain more advantage in Bosnia, but the mainstream in Zagreb knows better.

So it's all over 'cept for the crying, which we see a lot of here on FR.

I share your view about nazis, but contemporary muslim bosnians have nothing to do with the 3rd Reich. This is simply wrong and BS. Although there were some muslim members in the late SS, to the real nazis around Himmler those "mixed" races on the Balkans were biological BS.

You forgot the birth rates and fleeing of non-Muslims. Lebanon was a Christian country and Kosovo was Christian too.

44% means Muslim majority is a few years.
