Russians Observe Stalin's 126th Birthday

Wednesday December 21, 2005 7:31 PM

MOSCOW (AP) - Residents of a southern Russian town unveiled a statue Wednesday to Josef Stalin, as Communists and others marked the 126th anniversary of the late Soviet dictator's birth.

More three dozen residents of Digora, in the Caucasus region of North Ossetia, laid carnations at the gold bust topping a granite obelisk, while children in Soviet-style red kerchiefs saluted.

``Under Stalin, every year we waited for improvements and every year there were improvements. It's a fact,'' sculptor Mikhail Dzboyev said in televised comments.

In Moscow's Red Square, several dozen people carrying red flags bearing the face of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin braved wintry weather to visit Stalin's grave.

In the Georgian town of Gori, where Stalin was born, people gathered to toast the Soviet leader.

A growing number of Russian towns in recent years have considered erecting monuments to Stalin, a controversial issue for many Russians who say the dictator was responsible for the deaths of millions of his own people.

Others revere him for the Soviet Union's rapid industrialization and his leadership against Nazi Germany during World War II.

Please submit your complaint to the editor in chief of the Guardian instead of insulting other people (like me) by saying, that they lie.
A true Christian wouldn't do it. It's against the 8th commandement.

Time after time you have helped spread the mantra that Russia wants to return to Stalinism, and your posting this article shows you for the hypocrite you are in reality.

Gary regularly smears anyone who does not goose-step for KGB Putin like he does. Don't expect him to apologize for his unwarranted lies either, he is an unrepentant slanderer.

Get lost Gary.

I know I should have respect for your age, but really - when a person like you is writing about someone else's hypocrisy it really pi***s me off.

Joe, you just got caught in a lie on another thread regarding Yulia Tymoshenko and gas siphoning by the Ukraine.

Did the New York Times shut down production for this momentous event?

If this is anyone's lie, it's AP's, right? [WND is no source of accurate information, IMO.]

It was the Guardian's. WND, but several of the posters on Free Republic ran it into the ground that Stalinism was being revived in Russia, which is total nonsense.

you just got caught in a lie

No, I did not. You are the one who was exposed as a liar since you cannot show one single piece of solid evidence to back up your unfounded allegations about Tymoshenko. Your Russian masters have shown you for the malicious slanderous gossip you are by dropping all charges against Tymoshenko.

Go lick your Russian masters' boots now, traitor.

Of course what's funny is this same crowd loves Georgia that still honors Stalin with numerous statues and a museum. Which by the way, having been there when passing through Gori on the way to the ancient mountain side ruins (I can't remember the name of the city but its something like 4,000 years old and was litterly carved into a mountain) is one of the biggest fluff jobs to a murderous thug anyone can ever imagine. But yet the Saakashvili government has no problem with all that or the ceremonies performed for the patron saint of Gori by his demented worshipers.

fascinating read on Stalin

"A sweet-faced 13-year-old, Nato Makashvili, says her history teachers told her that Stalin was good. She was taught that he repressed or killed 20 million people, and also that he was a great leader. Quizzed how a man who killed so many could be good, she replied simply that her teachers told her so, and then lapsed into a puzzled silence."

So the truth that there are only 3 statues of Stalin in Russia bothers you?

BTW, my wife is a psychologist, and my doctorate is in Theology, with a second in Biblical psychology.
