This is all moon-man nonsense, and hocus pocus. I fear it, as I fear fire.

Very good Jigsaw.

I probably wouldn't have figured it out in ten years, however, my daughter told me that three years ago her sophmore western civ class figured it out for their teacher.

Just when I thought Freepers were always on the cutting edge... ;)

Great ... now, if someone would explain to me that infermal right triangle with the four parts which, when rearranged, produce an empty space.

You pick a number XY. You add both together X+Y. You subtract this from the original (10X+y)-(X+Y) This gives 9x. No matter what number you pick, this end result, 9x , is what you will get. Since x can only be an integer between 9 and zero inclusive you have only ten possible outcomes each one a multiple of 9. You will note all the multiples of 9, that is 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72 ,81 all have the same symbol.

Here's another teaser for you :pick a country that starts with D. Take the last letter of the country and pick an animal that starts with that letter. Then take the last letter of that animal and pick a color that starts with that letter. I bet you get orange.

Works with kangaroo, but not koala. Or kitty. :-)

Donate the $20. add those two digits together and subtract from the total ...take that number multiply by 3 every 10 minutes for 5 hour ...place that dollar amount in unmarked bills in a manilla envelope and place it on my desk.

I do the following trick with friends, which I think is similar.

I draw a clock on a piece of paper showing the numbers 1-12.

I then ask someone to think of a number between 1-12, say, the time they'll wake up the next morning.

I then go around the clock numbers with the tip of my finger touching the number. I then tell the person to mentally add to the number he/she tought of each time my finger falls on a number and stop me when he/she reaches 12. When she reaches the count of 12 my finger will be resting on the number he/she thought of.

As an example. If the person thought of the number 4, he/she will add 1 to it each time my finger touches on a number on the clock. When he/she reaches twelve I'm on the number he/she thought of.

I remember seeing a neat card trick about 3 years ago, but cant remember of the site. If anyone knows of the link, please let me know.

...and every multiple of 9 under 99 has digits which add to 9.

Why, I don't know.

This fact is irrelevant to the trick, but more interesting than the trick. In fact, the sum of the ( base ten ) digits of ANY number divisible by nine is also divisible by nine. So if you then add those digits, that number will be divisible by nine, and so on until you come to a single digit, which will be nine if, and only if, the original number was divisible by nine.

Why?

It's because 10, 100, 1000, etc. all leave remainder 1 when divided by 9, since each is 1 greater than 9, 99, 999, etc.

So then 20, 200, 2000 etc. leave remainder 2. 30, 300, 3000 leave remainder 3, and so on. To see this think of 3000 = 999 + 1 + 999 + 1 + 999 + 1, for example.

Finally, since 3462, e.g. is 3000 + 400 + 60 + 2, the remainder of 3462 when divided by 9 will be the same as the remainder of the sum of the remainders, when divided by 9. That is 3+4+6+2 = 15 and 15/9 = has remainder 6, and so 3462/9 has remainder 6.

This fact is "handy" for comparing Celsius and Fahrenheit. Since 32F = 0C, and every 9 degrees F is 5 degrees C, and 3+2 = 5, then the Fahrenheit temps that match the Celsius temps counting by 5 all "sum to 5". E.g. 32, 41, 50, 59, 68, ... Of course, you have to remember which one's which, so it's not really all that "handy". A really fun fact, though! Don't you think?

This fact is irrelevant to the trick ...

Well, not true. If you know the rule of nines, you know right away that since the sum of digits has the same remainder as the original, then the difference will have zero remainder.

Okay got a question.... not about this but about seeing patterns. I am a executive coach and I model out peoples personal qualities of Genius. One of the qualities that I find interesting in a lot of my clients is their ability to see patterns way before most people.

If I were to ask you what is the strategy or structure that goes on at the subconscious level when you see patterns like this?

Is it an internal system of sorting? If so is it visual, auditory or kinestetic?
