Yes, you have to be a real rocket scientist to drive a subway train on tracks. Ever have a remote control car with the 3 button handset? There ya go.

The only difficult part of operating a subway train is remembering the exact track to folow at specific multi-track junctions.

Other than that, it's just opening and closing doors, pulling in and out of stations and following the red/yellow/green tracklights the way one would follow stoplights.

"Your lack of sympathy to small businesses is very typical of many on FR who care nothing what goes on in NY regardless of the fact that GWB got more votes from NY than he got in probably 5 "Red" states combined."

You make a good point. Freepers always gripe about blue states, but if you look back, there were more Bush supporters in New York than all but three other states -- Florida, California, and Texas.

The people who are being hurt the most are the "working people" that Roger the Thug thinks he's fighting for.

Roger the Thug is in this for himself and for the unions, I somehow don't see the thugs caring a whit about all the people being hurt by this. Far many more people are being hurt by this strike than are being helped by it. Selfish b*stards. Fire the strikers and jail the union heads NOW.

Not only did Mayor Blooming-idiot say he thought it would be a terrible idea to fire the strikers.

Further he went on to say that he didn't want the leaders jailed either.

Must have compromising photos of Pataki somewhere.

And replace them with......?

Why...undocumented Hispanics that overwhelm the day-labor shelters here around the Washington DC beltway (Montgomery Co. MD and Fairfax/Loudon Co. VA) built with taxpayer money.

The can ferry them up to NYC on AMTRAK.

Do you know how many people there are in NYC during a typical work day????? around 6 to 7 million. More then enough to keep plenty of deli's and diners in business. The ones in my neighborhood are always packed.

I'll betcha that 18 year old kid who commandered that bus in New Orleans to get those seniors to safety during Katrina would volunteer to drive one of the buses.

The MTA gives away its record surplus on eBay!

You are babbling incoherently. There is no surplus - that money is earmarked for projects. The MTA has more cash on hand than it originally hoped for due to decent budget management - but that cash is not a surplus as erroneously reported.

then makes a pension demand which would cost new workers 4% of their income

It doesn't cost them a cent. They're saving their money toward a pension.

at a time of record prosperity in NYC

What does that have to do with the price of oolong in Beijing?

Because hardworking New Yorkers are making more money, these union scummers should get free pension money?

Wrong! They should save for their retirement like every private sector worker in NYC.

It's like those bums on the street who say: "Just a quarter? That's a nice jacket! I know you got money! Give me a dollar!"

Peter Kalikow should be fired along with Roger Toussant

He sure should, but not because he refused the union's ridiculous demands, which included 8% WAGE INCREASES EVERY YEAR, as well as FULL PENSION AT AGE 50 instead of the already preposterous age 55 and EXPANDED FREE HEALTHCARE with no premiums or deductibles.

Kalikow should be fired for not firing everyone of these greedy overpaid ingrates immediately.

This strike was totally unneccessary and both sides are equally to blame.

What a joke. An employee doesn't show up to work because his boss won't give him a free lifetime pension when he turns 50, free health benefits, and an above-market wage and it's his employer's fault?

Get real, pal.

Word is that 75% of the rank and file are not in favor of this strike. After all, it's all about the retirement of FUTURE hires.

This is about a power struggle between the powers that be at the top of the unions.

Remeber that Patakifeller got reelection by kissing union a-s by promising NOT to reform Medicaid.

Any "Republican" who cuddles up to unions should be kicked out of the party. F-ck the 11th Commandment!

BTW: Patakifeller has as much chance of gaining the nomination for the Presidency as Helen Thomas does of looking sexy. Aint gonna happen sports fans!

There was indeed a surplus. And the MTA gave away tens of millions in free tickets, which people are just selling on eBay. I don't mind, since I got a 75% discount on 3 of the 10-trips. But it is pretty stupid for them to just throw money down the drain like that and then come back at the last minute with a stupid pension demand they knew the union would walk out on. I am amazed how you give the MTA a total pass for this. Pension from 2% to 6%? On your other points regarding an 8% raise and 50-retirement age...those points had reached a compromise of 3.5% and 55 (stasis), respectively before Kalikow threw out the poison pension pill. The problem is the egos involved with this crap. This should be in the hands of a commission or mediator who hears the arguments and makes a decision. Period. Then if workers strike, they should be sent to Rikers by the dozen.

You support me completely and prove my point. "Even the die hard libs are pissed." My point exactly. These are the same scum sucking pieces of sub human filth who worship the clintons as God on Earth, who dream of orally pleasing osama, and who would spit on Jesus Christ to please a union, and now, all of a sudden, they're upset.

There are thousands of people who would love the chance to drive a city bus, even as a temporary replacement worker, for some easy extra cash.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Never happen...just think of the potential for insurance fraud.

This is the meanest time for a strike ever. Most businesses need Christmas volume to make it the rest of the year.

Can't Bloomberg do what Reagan did---fire 'em all and bring in replacements?

If I understand correctly , The law in New York does not allow transit workers to strike. Therefore all these workers are breaking the law. If seen on a picket line they could and should be arrested.

I think there is a little more to it than that. Probably anyone could run the train, but switching and schedules and getting the electricity and all those maintenance jobs..
