NSA Gave Other U.S. Agencies Information From Surveillance
The Washington Post ^ | Sunday, January 1, 2006 | Walter Pincus

Posted on 01/01/2006 7:33:31 AM PST by kristinn

Information captured by the National Security Agency's secret eavesdropping on communications between the United States and overseas has been passed on to other government agencies, which cross-check the information with tips and information collected in other databases, current and former administration officials said.

The NSA has turned such information over to the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and to other government entities, said three current and former senior administration officials, although it could not be determined which agencies received what types of information. Information from intercepts -- which typically includes records of telephone or e-mail communications -- would be made available by request to agencies that are allowed to have it, including the FBI, DIA, CIA and Department of Homeland Security, one former official said.

At least one of those organizations, the DIA, has used NSA information as the basis for carrying out surveillance of people in the country suspected of posing a threat, according to two sources. A DIA spokesman said the agency does not conduct such domestic surveillance but would not comment further. Spokesmen for the FBI, the CIA and the director of national intelligence, John D. Negroponte, declined to comment on the use of NSA data.

Today's NSA intercepts yield two broad categories of information, said a former administration official familiar with the program: "content," which would include transcripts of a phone call or e-mail, and "non-content," which would be records showing, for example, who in the United States was called by, or was calling, a number in another country thought to have a connection to a terrorist group. At the same time, NSA tries to limit identifying the names of Americans involved.

Now..I recall my ears ringing a few years ago from the MSM about the blame for 9-11 being different intelligence agencies DIDN'T Co-operate. So what's REAL the concensus WP?..Oh I see, whatever you can write to damage Bush as the opportunity presents itself.

I think you hit the nail on the head. When Able Danger was on the brink of being revealed, the big fuss over nice Ms. Wilson rose up and buried Able Danger. I believe the terrorist pilots in California were citizens. I think the reason that Clinton "did nothing" was not only because of the wall which HE PERSONALLY could bypass but because it might have given the Repubs an opportunity to go after him about "citizen surveillance"....the fuss that is now going on.

Of course, 500 FBI records is nothing. The Foster death was nothing. The Brown death was nothing. Whitewater was nothing. Travelgate was nothing. Monica was nothing. So look at the record....everything dirty is about Bubba and friends AND WIFE. How many of his friends landed in jail??

And the one thing that should have been taken more seriously by Bubba "PERSONALLY" in the form of DUTY (National Security) was tossed aside to PROTECT HIM. Treating terrorists like common criminals was not the intention of our founders. George Washington made it VERY CLEAR when he denied Andre a pardon that he didn't want to be considered soft on "Treason".

It's really not the bind. National Security trumps the 4th amendment. The ACLU already lost their case. It is referenced in the documents on the FISA sight. There is also another statement that the President has his own powers as Commander in Chief separate from the FISA PROCESS.

I thought the 9/11 commission complained about agencies not sharing information... sounds like they are doing what they have been directed to do.

The people complaining about the NSA monitoring calls and sharing information were the same people crying about the government not doing enough to fight terrorism prior to 9/11 and not sharing information between agencies. They just need something to bitch about.

They're also either clue less or deliberately deceiving.

I knew there would be a reaction to exposing Able Danger, and Hillry saying she was opposed to spying upon Americans was hysterically funny in a sick twisted way. The woman has NO shame.

Well, Democrats have been searching for a campaign platform. I suppose running on a platform of Treason is finally at long last an idea they can run with and claim all their own.

I suppose Walter and WAPO believe either way they win. This either wins Democrats elections, or it screws "George Bush's war". The idea that the war is keeping their heads attached to their necks rather then being sacrificed to Allah doesn't seem to compute.

With every action of Treason they quite literally force me to vote Republican. Even if there are a few I want gone, everytime I consider it, someone like Murtha sticks his head out and pulls another Benedict Arnold. Leaving me to conclude if they won't stop selling this country to the Islamofascists, that they'll all just have to be driven so far into the minority that they'll be lucky to be invited to secretive briefings on what beverage will be served for the day.

And this is a BAD THING? If they weren't sharing the data, but instead collecting and analyzing their own, I would be writing my Congresscritter about a massive waste of taxpayer funds!

Once again- the WP does not realize that we are at war with terrorists.

It is the entire loony left liberal DemonRATS that honestly do not believe we are fighting the terrorists. If you would tune into that insane Err America anytime of the day you will hear them pontificating on how Bush is lying to the American citizens about this "terrorist game" and if you happen to tune into the real loony ones, they will even give you the website offering positive proof that Bush and his Admin caused the WTC to collapse, and there was no airplane that crashed into the Pentagon. These loons that call in actually believe this bull sh$t. Err America needs to go away, it is a instrument of the Treasonous LEFT in this country. Fifth Column

I think that with the President fighting back hard at the DemonRATs lately, some of the Republican Congresscritters should bring up in their 2006 campaigns that there really is a treasonous bunch in this country trying to bring America down. I know that would not go over with the Deaniacs and Kerrys, but hey as I see it this is the truth.

I can't hardly imagine when Able Danger will be 'broken'.

Perhaps its best use is a three-year long backdrop. The MSM is aware of it, I believe it does shape their own perception, not that it matters with the marching orders they have.

There seems no doubt that the NYT and WP have committed treason [to my mind].

I think part of the problem traces back to GW being 'soft'. For example, he should have kicked CBS out of the WH Press Corps after their lying story on his Nat'l Guard service... a propaganda piece complete with forged documents, et al. He could have said: I support free speech, and I support your right to say whatever... but the White House is a small facility, and we just cannot extend space priviledges to propaganda orgs...

Instead, he treated them as if they had committed a minor error... sharks smell blood in the water, and these leftist newsies see GW as 'weak and vulnerable'... they will escalate until they either get GW or the American public puts them out of business.

Since the Clintooon sold our nuclear secrets to the Chinese for campaign cash, there appears to be nothing that can be called 'treason' any longer. Still, I call the NYT and the WP traitors, and I hope they hate my guts for saying it!

FReegards, and a Happy New Year to all!
