Thanks Davey.

Does anyone know what 23 Jan might be in terms of Jewish feast days or events impacting Israel in centuries past?

Talk of military action as Iran nuclear standoff continues

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel's defense minister hinted Saturday that the Jewish state is preparing for military action to stop Iran's nuclear program, but said international diplomacy must be the first course of action.

"Israel will not be able to accept an Iranian nuclear capability and it must have the capability to defend itself, with all that that implies, and this we are preparing," Shaul Mofaz said.

His comments at an academic conference stopped short of overtly threatening a military strike but were likely to add to growing tensions with Iran.

Germany's defense minister said in an interview published Saturday that he is hopeful of a diplomatic solution to the impasse over Iran's nuclear program, but argued that "all options" should remain open.

Asked by the Bild am Sonntag weekly whether the threat of a military solution should remain in place, Franz Josef Jung was quoted as responding: "Yes, we need all options."

French President Jacques Chirac said Thursday that France could respond with nuclear weapons against any state-sponsored terrorist attack.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said Saturday that Chirac's threats reflect the true intentions of nuclear nations, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

"The French president uncovered the covert intentions of nuclear powers in using this lever (nuclear weapons) to determine political games," IRNA quoted Asefi as saying.

Israel long has identified Iran as its biggest threat and accuses Tehran of pursuing nuclear weapons. Iran says its atomic program is peaceful.

Iran broke U.N. seals at a uranium enrichment plant Jan. 10 and said it was resuming nuclear research after a 2 1/2-year freeze. Germany, France and Britain said two days later that talks aimed at halting Iran's nuclear progress were at a dead end and called for Iran's referral to the U.N. Security Council.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, will meet Feb. 2 to discuss possible referral.

Israel's Mofaz said sanctions and international oversight of Iran's nuclear program stood as the "correct policy at this time."

In Germany, Jung called himself "confident that there will be a diplomatic solution in the case of Iran."

Israeli leaders have also repeatedly said they hope the crisis can be resolved through diplomacy, and they said any military action would have to be part of an international effort. They have denied having plans for a unilateral preventive strike.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Tehran might still agree to Moscow's offer to move its uranium enrichment program to Russia, a step backed by the United States and Europeans as a way to resolve the deadlock.

Israel's concerns about Iran have grown since the election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who said last year that Israel should be "wiped off the map."

On Friday, Iran's Students News Agency reported Friday that Central Bank governor Ebrahim Sheibani said Iran had begun moving its foreign currency reserves from European banks and transferring them to an undisclosed location as protection against possible U.N. sanctions.

Sheibani backed away Saturday from his statement that the transfers were already underway, and Iran's Central Bank said there had been no change in its currency policy.

Estimates put Iranian funds in Europe at as much as $50 billion.

US Navy captures suspected pirates off Somali coast Sat Jan 21, 6:14 PM ET

DUBAI (Reuters) - U.S. Navy vessels pursued a suspected pirate ship in the Indian Ocean off Somalia's coast and fired warning shots to capture its crew on Saturday, U.S. Navy Forces Central Command said.

The guided missile destroyer Winston S. Churchill and other U.S. naval forces located the vessel after receiving a report of an attempted act of piracy, but it failed to respond to orders to stop.

"Churchill began aggressive maneuvering in an attempt to stop the vessel. The vessel continued on its course and speed. (Then) Churchill fired warning shots," said a Navy statement.

"(Later) Churchill fired additional warning shots, and at that time the crew of the suspect pirate vessel established communications by radio and indicated that they would begin sending personnel to the Churchill via their small boat in tow."

The crewmembers were seized and U.S. Navy sailors who boarded the vessel discovered small-arms weapons on board, the statement said. It did not say how many suspects were held.

Piracy has become epidemic in the unpatrolled waters off the coast of lawless Somalia, where at least 23 hijackings and attempted seizures have been reported since mid-March.

Somalia has been without a central government since 1991, when rival warlords ousted Mohamed Siad Barre.

In November, the Somali government signed a two-year deal worth $50 million with a U.S. marine security firm in a bid to end piracy.

Khan's Nuclear Black Market is Alive
By Allabaksh - Syndicate Features

In March 2004 the then US secretary of state, Colin Powell, had declared in Delhi at the start of his South Asian visit that the Pakistan-led nuclear proliferation network had to be ‘completely rooted out’. While praising the Pakistani dictator, Gen Pervez Musharraf for being 'as determined as we (the US) are' in meeting that goal, Powell had added: 'But we cannot be satisfied until the entire network is gone, branch and root.' He had, incidentally, also patted Pakistan for what he said was a decline in militant's infiltration into India and assured Delhi that 'we will be watching that it stays that way.'

Since then neither has the Pakistan-led nuclear proliferation network been smashed 'branch and root', nor, for that matter, has infiltration of militants really declined to any significant level. A 'leaked' western intelligence report on secret proliferation activities of 'rogue' states says that in company with Iran and Syria, Pakistan has been secretly engaged in operating a clandestine network of nuclear trade in western Europe with the twin aim of developing an Iranian nuclear bomb and Pakistan’s and Syria’s nuclear weapons and rocket programmes.

Right under the 'hawk' eyes of the US and all the proliferation Ayatollahs in the west, Pakistan and the other 'rogue' states have been running with the help of their governments and diplomatic missions abroad an illegal nuclear proliferation trade with bogus companies and institutions to procure components, spare parts and crucial replacements for developing chemical, biological, conventional and nuclear weapons. It has been expressed clearly that Pakistan has continued to buy far more components and materials than were needed for its 'peaceful' nuclear programme.

The 'leaked' western intelligence report on nuclear proliferation, particularly the role of Pakistan, has naturally been considerably down played, as if Pakistan was shopping for fire crackers. After the exposure of the A.Q. Khan nuclear black market and his subsequent 'house arrest' the US and its western allies have been hammering in the point that Pakistan has started to behave like a responsible nuclear state. The report lays bare the truth behind that US-led propaganda designed to keep Islamabad on the side of Washington in the so-called war on terror.

The 'leaked' report, based on inputs from Britain, France, Germany and Belgium, has also put into question the certificate that the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohammed el-Baradei had given to Pakistan as recently as November 2005, maintaining that Islamabad had extended ‘good cooperation’ to the UN nuclear watchdog agency in resolving the many pieces in the Iranian nuclear puzzle.

Pakistan's reaction to the ‘leaked’ report has been vague, as was to be expected. ‘We have completely dismantled the underground network of A. Q. Khan’ is the standard line Islamabad takes whenever the matter of its proliferation activities crops up. The credibility of this stock reply should be clear from the fact that reports about Pakistan’s continued efforts to build up its nuclear arsenal keep surfacing every now and then.

Pakistan has also denied another ( leaked?) report in the western media that it was planning to buy $10 billion worth of nuclear reactors from China, ostensibly to boost its nuclear energy programme. The story is that Pakistan proposes to procure between six to eight reactors, each of 600 mw, as it races to meet its goal of producing 8800 mw of nuclear energy by 2030 from the present level of 425 mw from its two nuclear reactors, one built by Canada and the second, at Chashma in Punjab, by China. The Chinese have just helped the launch of a third reactor at Chashma. Pakistan has, of course, denied that it is in talks with Beijing to purchase eight nuclear reactors. But by now the world, or at least most people in India, know how serious Pakistani denials on matters that expose its odious intents are.

That the Pakistani nuclear programme has been built to a great extent with the Chinese help is well known. China has flouted its obligations under the nuclear non-proliferation treaty to help Pakistan and there can be no doubt that it will do so again. It is to be noted that Pakistan has showed a sudden urge to boost its nuclear energy programme after India and the US reportedly agreed on a civilian nuclear cooperation programme the future of which, however, is not clear at the moment. Pakistan objected to the proposed Indo-US deal and when much to Islamabad’s disappointment it failed to move the US, it asked the US to offer it a deal similar to the one being offered to India. The US has kept mum on the latter issue, probably fearing a hue and cry in India. But no one should be surprised if at a later stage the US replicates the Indian nuclear deal with Pakistan.

Before that happens, India will do well to ask the US to be more honest in persuading Pakistan to dismantle its clandestine nuclear trade--as also its terror machine—for its own good. Washington has to insist on access to Khan to know the truth behind the Pakistani claim that his nuclear black market has become dormant and Pakistan has nothing to do with the Iranian nuclear programme or its suspected help, extended earlier, to Saudi Arabia’s desire to acquire nuclear arms.

Pakistan’s nuclear programme was started by the late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto with the help of A. Q Khan. The purpose of this programme was very clear: countering India after the Pokharan explosion in 1974. It is strange that the West insists that Iran’s nuclear programme is not energy-oriented as Tehran says but ignores the more clear signs that Pakistan’s nuclear programme is almost entirely geared for aggressive military aims—and proliferation on an audacious scale.

The western, more specifically American, perfidy in taking the rogue and irresponsible activities of Pakistan lightly cannot give any comfort to India. Despite the ‘house arrest’ of A. Q. Khan the huge nuclear black market that he had set up remains alive. The ‘father’ of Pakistani nuclear bomb, Khan, a metallurgist, had offered his services to Bhutto after Pokharan One. At that time he was working at Almelo in the Netherlands with a Dutch uranium firm, Urenco. His activities in the Netherlands aroused sufficient suspicion among the Americans, firmly allied to Pakistan, to keep a vigil on him. The Dutch did not like what Khan was doing—stealing nuclear secrets---and wanted to arrest him. The CIA put pressure on the Dutch government not to arrest him because the agency said it was shadowing him to collect more information about his activities and contacts. This much was revealed by the former Dutch Prime Minister, Ruud Lubbers, in August last year.

Khan got wind of trouble that was likely to hit him and fled to the safety of Pakistan in 1976 where Bhutto treated him as a hero and handed him a blank cheque to start up an ambitious nuclear programme. However, a court in Holland tried him in absentia and sentenced him to prison on charges of nuclear spying. The charge was overturned later on a ‘technicality’. Khan was never known to have set foot on the Dutch soil again, though before he left Holland, he had acquired a wife in that country. And now he lives well ensconced in his palatial bungalow in Islamabad, perhaps watching with glee that the clandestine operations he had started go on regardless of what the world is told by Musharraf and others.

Farmington bomb squad detonates 500 pounds of explosives

FARMINGTON -- The Farmington Police bomb squad relocated nearly 500 pounds of explosives Friday morning from a storage shed in Crouch Mesa to an area near Safety City, where the explosives were detonated at around 5 p.m.

The San Juan County Sheriff's Office, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), San Juan County Fire Department and San Juan County Paramedics assisted in the operation.

"We take extra precautions," Smith said. "Especially since (the storage shed) is located close to a housing area."

According to Farmington Police Detective Stephen Smith, police received an anonymous tip Thursday night that a number of old explosives were being contained in a fuel storage tank at CIP Incorporated at 51 County Road 5570.

Smith said he estimated the explosives, which were composed of ammonium nitrate, to be 10 years old and speculated that they were intended to break up shale for construction purposes. The compound is a less sensitive substance than other explosive compounds, such as nitroglycerine, he noted.

"In essence, it's a 500-pound pipe bomb," Smith said.

After receiving the tip Thursday night, police immediately contacted the ATF who advised them about how to properly move and dispose of the explosives, he said.

The explosives were transported in 50-pound bags from CIP to an area outside Safety City by means of a dump truck filled with sand.

Smith said the most critical points of the operation were loading and unloading the explosives from the truck.

"We're treating it as 500 pounds of what could happen," he said.

When asked how much damage the explosives could potentially cause if ignited, Smith said they could "easily take out a block of trailer houses" in the area.

The explosives were placed in plastic containers and then buried in 10 separate holes approximately 12 to 18 inches deep, said Patrolman David Schragel, who is also a member of the bomb squad.

They were then detonated in a field on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land near Safety City by delay-shock timers, Smith said. The timers allowed each set of explosives to detonate within milliseconds of each other.

Smith said there are no criminal charges at this time, as police do not believe that the explosives were ever stolen. The explosives were not registered to anyone.

Anyone with information regarding explosives is urged to contact the Amnesty Hotline at (505) 599-1468.

Bin Laden Threat Points to Imminent Attack, Analyst Says
By Sherrie Gossett

Jan 21, 2006

(CNSNews.com) - An audio statement by Osama bin Laden broadcast on al-Jazeera television Thursday appears to be related to recent threats made by an al Qaeda front in Europe and points to an imminent attack, according to a Washington-based analyst.

Christopher L. Brown of the Hudson Institute earlier this month analyzed the Jan. 6 videotaped message of Ayman al-Zawahiri, bin Laden's chief deputy. The tape, Brown said, and other al Qaeda communications indicated a high probability that al Qaeda would launch a major terrorist attack in the next 30 days and that the United States was the likeliest target.

Cybercast News Service reported on Brown's analysis in an exclusive report published on Jan. 11. Brown, a researcher with a Washington think tank, has briefed members of Congress and senior administration officials on key threats. He has also prepared testimony and briefing materials for officials at the Department of Defense, State Department, CIA, National Security Council and White House.

"The new operation of al Qaeda has not happened, not because we could not penetrate the security measures," bin Laden said during the broadcast. "It is being prepared, and you'll see it in your homeland very soon."

The al Qaeda leader also offered a truce to the American people, referring to polls that indicate the majority of U.S. citizens favor troop withdrawal from Iraq.

"We are a nation that Allah banned from lying and stabbing others in the back," said bin Laden. "Hence, both parties of the truce will enjoy stability and security to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan, which were destroyed by war."

Brown told Cybercast News Service that approximately "six to eight weeks ago," the Abu-Hafs al-Masri Brigades -- an al Qaeda front headed by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi -- posted threats on the Internet promising attacks soon in the "land of the Romans," adding that bin Laden would make an appearance "around the Christmas holidays."

Intelligence officials are now saying they believe the bin Laden audiotape was made in December. "That makes sense to me," Brown said. "The Jan. 6 [Zawahiri] video was likely also made in middle to early December."

The Brigades is one of the primary front names for al Qaeda operations in Europe and North America.

Earlier this month Brown as well as Dan Darling of the Manhattan Institute for Policing Terrorism, told Cybercast News Service that the "land of the Romans" could be a symbolic reference to the United States as the great imperial power of the age.

He added that it could also be a reference to the "Romanesque" architecture in Washington, D.C.

Bin Laden uses the term "Romans" as a synonym for Crusaders and America. In an audiotape broadcast on Al-Jazeera on Jan. 4, 2004 bin Laden called for jihad to "repulse the raid of the Romans, which started in Iraq; no one knows where it will end."

Italy -- an obvious possibility for the "land of the Romans" -- has received numerous threats from the Brigades over the last six months.

In early January, three Algerians from the Salafist Group for Call and Combat -- or GSPC -- were arrested in southern Italy. Officials said they were suspected of being linked to a planned series of strikes against both Italy and the United States. The alleged U.S. attacks were designed to outdo the Sept. 11, 2001, strikes and targeted ships, stadiums and railway stations.

Still, al Qaeda is known to use misdirection when announcing its targets.

The Brigades' Internet posting, under the name of al Qaeda's reputed military commander Saif al-Adel, said the attacks would involve unidentified poisonous substances and surface-to-air missiles procured from Chechnya.

The message was posted the same month French terrorism investigators reported that an interrogation of al Qaeda suspect Abu Atiya revealed the group had allegedly procured advanced Russian-made man-portable missile systems and ricin, botulin and other toxins from Chechnya.

These weapons have not been found but were allegedly smuggled into Europe.

The missile system reference was specifically to the sophisticated SA-18 missile, which has greater altitude and range than its predecessors and includes better protection against electro-optical jammers found on military aircraft. Brown acknowledged the possibility that the weapons were smuggled into the U.S.

The alleged author of the Brigades posting, Saif al-Adel, is al Qaeda's top military commander. "He's the head of al Qaeda's military committee within the Shura Council," said Brown, "a position analogous to the Secretary of Defense within the U.S. government, which means al-Adel answers directly to Bin Laden and Zawahiri."

In addition, al-Adel is the direct superior to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the reputed head of the Abu-Hafs al-Masri Brigades and leader of al Qaeda's operations in Iraq.

"As large-scale operations in either of these regions requires the direct approval of bin Laden or Zawahiri, the command path for such an order would most likely be from them to al-Adel, then to Zarqawi, and finally to assets in the area meant for attack," said Brown.

"Hence, the importance of this specific threat, given that it references both al-Adel and the Abu-Hafs Al-Masri Brigades," he added.

As previously reported by Cybercast News Service, Brown believes a timing pattern inherent in the Ayman al-Zawahiri videos and Abu-Hafs al-Masri brigade statements "green-lighting" attacks indicate a "99 percent" chance al Qaeda will launch a major terrorist attack soon outside the major theaters of Iraq and Afghanistan.

A Cybercast News Service report on Sept. 8, 2005, detailed Brown's warning regarding an impending October attack. The article was followed by the Bali bombings on Oct. 1, 2005. Brown also previously predicted within a 30-day time frame, the July 2005 bombings and their location in London.

Bin Laden's audiotape represents the first time since December of 2004 that bin Laden has issued an audio statement. The al Qaeda leader has previously promised he would not appear again on video until after the next attack on America, suggesting to some that his infrequent appearances are planned to maximize dramatic impact. His silence or other factors led several pundits to speculate that the al Qaeda leader was dead.

Make media inquiries or request an interview with Sherrie Gossett.

Of course the U.S. Navy did it correctly.

Gotta love a sailor.

I just had a horrible thought and I am not laughing.

I do not know what the 2006 Navy Uniform looks like.

I see a good looking sailor, white round hat, neckerchief,
tied just so, and 16 buttons on the square front pants...

We don't have the Navy in the Arizona desert.

I have read of many countries that have Khan's nuclear plans, he has said that he thinks all muslim countries should have them.

There are several reports that he has given them to al-Qaeda.

Kadafy had a set of them.

There is no doubt in my mind that Iran has a set.

The Iran nuclear event will be more than we can imagine.

500 pounds.

Gotta be a good story behind that report.

You can bet, that some evil person knew the explosives were there, even if they didn't put them there.

VLADIKAVKAZ. Jan 22 (Interfax) - A series of explosions have ripped a pipeline delivering Russian gas to Georgia.

"A sharp drop in the gas pressure was reported in the Mozdok-Tbilisi gas pipeline at 2:55 a.m. on Sunday. At 3:05 a.m. the pipeline was shut off," spokesman for North Ossetia's Emergency Situations Ministry Vladimir Ivanov told Interfax.

Ivanov said that the blasts have damaged the main and reserve pipelines in the area of Verkhny Lars customs checkpoint in North Ossetia.

"The scene suggests there were a serious of explosions. But experts are to decide whether a subversive act or technical causes were involved," Ivanov said. sd
