The school officials are idiotic for trying to ban the bags. However, you can't deny that the rebel flag has been taken over by some pretty creepy racist elements in the 20th century. Most people associate it with these elements, not with the civil war.

Burleson High School, with a 2,200 student enrollment, is about 90 percent white, 8 or 9 percent Hispanic. Hispanics fought for the Confederacy. Oh and, so did Jews. Don't tell Abe Foxman, he'll have a heart attack.

Lettem keep their silly purses. They aren't hurting anyone. Besides, they'll have a new one in a week, anyway. :P

Frankly, in 2006, those who sport the Confederate flag on their vehicles or clothing are usually greater Americans than those who take offense at such symbolism.

It's not nearly as racist as the name Planned Parenthood. Will they be banning all of their material too?

I wouldn't want these school adminstrators teaching my children about history, because they don't even know it themselves.

I was born, bred and live in NY. I am no fan of the confederate flag but this should definitely be protected speech.
To: stainlessbanner
The Federal Court of Appeals has already ruled on this issue in other states where it has gone that far through the courts and yes, the Confederate Battle Flag is free speech and should not be infringed. Burleson is a fixin' to find it out when the SCV gets its lawyers on the issue.

The Civil War lasted 5 years ending 1865. Yet we are apparently still fighting it 140 years later in 2006. It's American history folks. History should be preserved and studied, not fought or erased. JMHO.
To: stainlessbanner
I'm of two minds about this. I've got no problem with the Confederate flag as a historical and cultural touchstone, so long as it isn't being employed for Aryan racist type demagoguery.
OTOH, I am so sick and tired of adults using their children as pawns for their own political agendas. You name the issue, and adults are using kids as catspaws: gay Scoutmasters in the BSA, condoms and anonymous abortions for 13 year olds, school uniforms, picketing Bush as a field trip, lawsuits over the Pledge of Allegiance. Hey, grownups! Fight your own battles!

I am a Yankee and have never been offended by the Stars and Bars. It is an "American" battle flag and many good Americans fought, bled and died under it.
I am, however, greatly offended by the Queer Rainbow flag and the Black Power red, green and black banner. As one who was a student at the University of Wisconsin from 1966-1970, I am also highly pissed at the Che T-shirts that are all the rage. I remember than butcher for what he was...a butcher.

Sorry, but when these girls say they didn't mean to cause trouble, they're either lying or really incredibly stupid.
