Although it is still more than two years before the main parties in the United States decide on their candidates for the 2008 presidential election, it is widely assumed that the Democratic Party candidate will be the junior senator from New York, Hillary Clinton.
You might expect the political conversation among Democrats to be along the lines of "is Hillary electable" (given the preponderance of red states on the American political map) but as I discovered during a recent visit to the US, many in her natural base have already washed their hands of her.

It was articulated with the passion of people scorned. Clinton has not just disappointed, she has betrayed them. I might have been more surprised at the way these Upper West Side liberals were slagging off at someone many of them would once have seen as a political ally, if not a personal friend, had it not been for a pretty savage piece in that week's New York magazine.

Then with a knowing wink of the eye to them she will attend a military event and exclaim her gratitude for the job the troops have done.
Sure they'll trash her, until she's on the ticket opposite a Republican. Then suddenly she's lesser of two evils.

So long as Hillary retains solid minority support (and Blacks remember the 90's as the best of times) the white liberals will grumble but fall in line.

The difference is that while most in the blue bits will probably hold their noses and vote for her, most of the folks in the red bits never will. And without them, she is toast.

I do hope that we will never forget the "Clinton Rule of Politics", that being they will say and do anything to get elected. If the polls showed most American voters wanted to have a pet toad, who would be out front saying the government must provide one for every American child, and the poor amongst us must have one for free? Hillary would be leading the pack, you can count on it.
Members of the communist movement in the US know HRC belongs to them, body and soul. Her current makeover involves getting much further away from them than is credible, or even plausible.
Stories like this will keep appearing. She will rebuke Michael Moore. Some gay activists will dissolve in tears of rage. There will be demonstrations. She will carry a Bible.
To quote one of the formative influences on her career, she will get power "by any means necessary".
Just wait and see who shows up on Inauguration Day.
