MLK cheated on his dissertation and cheated on his wife. He was shown repeatedly not to be an honorable person. There are so many other black people who could and should be recognized.

I suspect he became an icon because Malcolm X scared the establishment and they needed an alternative.

For every Jessie Jackson, Marion Barry and MLK there are many black heroes who go unrecognized.

Really? I knew about the affair, but I've never heard about the dissertation plagiarism. Who did he plagiarize?

I am not a perfect gal and MLK,jr. was not a perfect man. He was an amazing orator and a motivating force. I give him due credit for his success. I do not agree with everything Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ever said and I will let God determine his morality at this point- but the Civil Rights movement forced changes which made this country better for everyone.

I am not completely sold on the necessity of a whole day devoted to Dr. King, mind you, but he did make positive contributions to Freedom and to our country, and IMO that is pretty cool.
