It appears to me that these awards are handed out today for a film's political content, and not for artistic merit. If the film makes a "progressive" (left) political statement, it wins.
Remember when Rush mocked their ribbon wearing? On his TV show, Rush donned about a dozen different color ribbons - he looked like a general. Rush suggested that he cares more because of the sheer volume of ribbons upon his chest. It was hysterical.
"Who?! Who will not wear the ribbon?!!!"
Well, 90 percent of the Palm Springs City Council, for starts...
Rush, on his TV show, wore a ribbon made out of a dollar bill to symbolize and promote deficit reduction.
How do you know they didn't? One thing for sure, these guys sure may have "typecast" themselves out of straight male leads in the future...
The greatest truth in your remarks is in one phrase " ... By most accounts it's an extremely well-made and powerful movie, ..."
You are correct, by most public media accounts, it is all that. Step back, take a Joe-six-pack perspective on the film, and then comment again. ;-)
An example of what's happening right now occurred with the film "Philadelphia". It was a sappy melodrama good only as a made for TV film and even their it was shlop. However, Jonathan Demme directed it and because Hollywood had to be on the cutting edge and embrace homosexuality and AIDS (Heh! A twofer), "Philadelphia" got all the awards. I like Tom Hanks but not then because he seem jump on the gay bandwagon too just to fit in.
"Hi! You may not remember me, but I'm Heath Ledger, for Enemabags.com. http://ememabag.com/ "
Tired? Irritable with your boyfriend? Try our double-latte . . ."
Brokeback Mountain is in 683 theaters.
And yes, Syriana and Jarhead are both losers, and probably for good reasons! I was thinking of seeing Syriana and was definitely planning to see Jarhead until I heard more about them (I never watch anything without getting at least some 'word-of-mouth' feedback). I didn't end up seeing either based on what I heard.
But, what does that have to do with BM? Ishtar was a big huge bomb too. So what? ;)
Actually, this does have something to do with BM. I just don't think a film would do well unless it's getting good word-of-mouth overall from those who've seen it. There have been plenty of critically-acclaimed films over the years, even critically-orgasmic films, that have been box office flops.
The real test for BM arrives this weekend. At Box Office Mojo they say it'll expand into 400 more theaters. That means it's expanding out of the art houses and into the metroplexes so it's 'break-out' potential will finally start becoming clear.
In related news, Spielberg was whining yesterday about his "Munich" bombing at the box office. The $70M movie has taken-in just $33M. There is justice in the world.
I just went and looked to see what you meant. The 1,194 theaters listed for Brokeback's widest release are for this upcoming weekend, so they're adding 511 it seems. Right now, it's still 683. Actually, that 511 expansion alone is a statement on how well it's doing, because the original plan as of this past weekend was to add 200 theaters on Jan 20.
Is the vote anonymous?
I understand what you are saying - - that the liberals who dominate "the Academy" will tend to vote their guilt and their vain "enlightened superiority" over quality and substance - - but is there a viable alternative for the brighter voters to hang their hats on? (I don't even know what's in the running but there MUST be a quality film out there SOMEWHERE.)
Yep, Hollywood's big winners for this year: two gay movies, a transsexual movie, and two pro-terrorist movies.
San Antonio KENS tv anchorman Chris Marrou indulged in a little impromptu humor at the end of the 5 p.m. news the other day. To some, however, it was anything but funny.
The comments led to complaints to the KENS newsroom and apologies to viewers from Executive News Director Kurt Davis.
Marrou made the remarks Tuesday evening after a report on the People's Choice Awards and Reese Witherspoon's win for best actress in "Walk the Line."
"Why didn't they just give one of those guys from 'Brokeback Mountain' best actress?" he quipped.
That brought an "ooh" from co-anchor Deborah Knapp. But that wasn't the end of it.
Bill Taylor then wondered how Heath Ledger (who plays one of the gay cowboys in "Brokeback Mountain") also could be legendary lothario Casanova in another movie just out.
"That's right," Marrou said. "He plays it both ways."
"Read Mark Steyn's review of the movie - www.marksteyn.com"
I must do that NOW!!!
Cowboys? Brokebutt Mountain is about homosexual sheep herders! How pathetic can they get? SoddomWood has a BP Oscar that barely breaks even.
Pray for W and Our Freedom Fighters
And Walk The Line (Johnny Cash bio) - a great movie!
