Alito Ads Target Dems: 'Stand With Mainstream, Not Ted Kennedy'

A conservative group supporting Samuel Alito’s confirmation will launch TV ads in North and South Dakota this weekend that ask moderate Senate Democrats to “stand with mainstream America, not Ted Kennedy.”

The Coalition for a Fair Judiciary is spending $100,000 on the TV ads. Two Democratic senators, Kent Conrad (N.D.) and Tim Johnson (S.D.), are targeted in the 30-second commercials. Both remain undecided about Alito's confirmation.

Conrad has the most to lose if he chooses to cast a "no" vote. He is up for re-election in November and hails from a conservative state that President Bush easily carried in 2000 and 2004.

The ads, which are available on the Coalition for a Fair Judiciary’s website, ask constituents to call their senator’s office. A female announcer declares:

“Along with Democrats and Republicans, newspapers across America: the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Wall Street Journal, the Fargo Forum, are endorsing Judge Samuel Alito for the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Yet politically motivated liberal extremists like Ted Kennedy continue to attack Judge Alito. Senator Kent Conrad will soon cast his vote. Call Senator Conrad and tell him to vote yes on Judge Alito and stand with mainstream America, not Ted Kennedy.”

Kay Daly, president of the Coalition for a Fair Judiciary, said, “Liberal Democrats such as Ted Kennedy are already making Judge Alito an election-year issue even though support for his Alito is wide and deep across the country as evidenced by numerous editorial endorsements -- even from liberal newspapers such as the Washington Post. Our message to moderate Democrats is they have a choice: they can stand with the American people or they can stand with liberal extremists like Ted Kennedy.”

I'd rather they opposed him. The GOP can confirm him with little or no Dim support. (Dims seem afraid to filibuster - and could be nuked if they did.)

I think many of these undecideds may vote no, but will not consider joining a filibuster. Alito is in. We will just have to plug our ears until all the whining is over in 7 or 10 days.

Unfortunately, with neither the current popular North Dakota GOP governor, John Hoeven, nor his popular predecessor, Ed Schaefer, willing to take on Kent Conrad this year means that the liberal senator can pretty much feel free and safe to cast a no vote on Alito. By the time he comes up again, the Alito vote will be ancient history, even if the GOP convinces a strong challenger to take him on in 2012.

Does anyone know why Schaefer didn't run for reelection in 2000 when he was eligible, or why he has opted to avoid a Senate race three times now (Conrad in 2000, Dorgan in 04, and Conrad in 06)? Is he out making money in the private sector a la Marc Racicot of Montana?

What a colossal waste of money. There is not one single member of congress whose vote has not already been decided.

The ad doesn't target congress. It targets their VOTERS.

The voters have no say in this and I sincerely doubt if it would matter to them come November. Those that would vote for the Dems will do so no matter which way their Rep. or Sen. vote in this confirmation.

Compare the look on Sen. Dianne Feinstein's face during Judge Aleto's hearings to one of the sinners in Michelangelo's famous Sistine Chapel fresco "The Blessed and the Damned of the Last Judgment."
