report: HUNDREDS turned away as Ann Coulter ENERGIZES packed house at Loyola Marymount - PHOTOS!
Voice of controversy [ANN COULTER begins YAF tour @ Loyola L.A.: Coming soon to a college near YOU!] ^ | January 20, 2006 | RonDog [and FRiends]

FReepers and bloggers on hand to provide THEIR commentary (and PHOTOS!)
HUNDREDS turned away as
Ann Coulter ENERGIZES a "standing room only" crowd at LMU

(James Carville, not quite ready for prime time, also present; unsuccessfully tries out new material)
The following "Letter from the Editors" (printed in the program for last night's event) set the tone for the entire evening:
"...Many people say that this a politically apathetic campus.

They say that LMU students don't care don't care about worldly issues. The critics believe that this evening will be a failure. They think that students won't show up for this once in a lifetime event. They think that we wont't be mature enough to allow the speakers to express their views. They don't think that this university is ready to join the elites.

But on Thursday night, we the student body of LMU will once again prove our critics wrong.

The university is having an awakening, and this event will be an indication of what's to come.

We will greet two of the biggest names in politics with dignity and respect..."

Well, they certainly got THAT part right!
It must be a RELIGIOUS school thing. :o)
If last night's event was a test, LMU passed with flying colors! Not only did they prove that they had good manners, they turned out in MUCH LARGER numbers than the nay-sayers had predicted, completely overwhelming the tiny venue chosen this FIRST of what now may be MANY similar events.

Both Ann and the Serpenthead seem to have been surprised by the very different (i.e., thoughtful, and RESPECTFUL) kind of audience that they encountered last night during their "back-to-back" appearances at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles last night, which were part of "First Ammendment Week," sponsored by the LMU student newspaper, the Loyolan.

Not sure about Carville, but I understand that Ann generally encounters a MUCH DIFFERENT reception on a OTHER college campi -- where she has had to deal with pie-throwing goons, and disruptors blasting loud music through the PA system during her speech, to drown out her voice.

Our small group of FReepers (and FRiends of Ann) who were able to get inside saw virtually NO protestors outside, and only TWO (rather lame) attempts to heckle her inside...
More soon.

Students fill Burns Back Court for Carville and Coulter

Burns Back Court was packed to capacity last night as members of the LMU community piled in to see back-to-back speeches from political strategist James Carville and political commentator Ann Coulter as a part of the Loyolan's fourth annual First Amendment Week.

A line for the event began forming at 4:30 p.m., 90 minutes before the doors opened. There were 750 chairs set up in Burns Back Court, and many students stood in the back of the room once the chairs were all filled. When Carville's speech began, there were still hundreds of people waiting outside the Back Court, although when others left, those still waiting in line were allowed to enter.

"We were so happy that so many students came out to support the event, and it was unfortunate we could not accommodate everyone," said Loyolan interim Editor in Chief Natalie Nordseth. "It reflects so well on this university that there was such a positive response and we will definitely take that into consideration when planning next year's program."

Nordseth said that the Loyolan is already looking into speakers for next year's First Amendment Week, and encouraged the LMU community to submit suggestions. She can be contacted at nnordseth@theloyolan.com

The ROAR Network and LMUTV will replay Carville's speech and question and answer session as well Coulter's question and answer session from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. beginning today on channel six.
RonDog's note:
We will have MUCH BETTER photographs of our lovely Ann posted on this thread -- soon!
It is a good thing that we had OUR OWN photographer on site. :o)

From the pre-FReep thread, that would be THIS place:

Rec Center Back Court-Burns

This facility is located on the 2nd floor of the Burns Recreation Center. This large basketball court can be converted into any set up style desired.
Maximum Capacity 500 (theater style)
Square Feet 6784

Way to go, Ann!
Amen!
More on THAT, later.

One of the BIG winners of last night's event -- besides ANN, of course -- was THIS courageous (and determined) young woman, from www.laloyolan.com:

Natalie Nordseth - Managing Editor

Natalie Nordseth is a political science and communication studies major from Dallas, Texas.
You can e-mail her at nnordseth@theloyolan.com.
Natalie was one of the driving forces behind last night's ENORMOUS (if somewhat imperfect) success, which was sponsored by the LMU student newspaper, The LOYOLAN.
Way to go, NATALIE!
Note to potential organizers of "Ann" events at OTHER colleges:
NATALIE got to hang out with Ann, before AND after the event, as she SHE was the event co-ordinator.
How's THAT for a reward for doing the right thing?

Jesus! - Put a brown shirt and a hat on him and he looks just like a Nazi pointing out with a scowl and a finger just how much things will be better under the new Fatherland rule!

Its the expressions that betray their inner thoughts.

Other than that, the mans a moron.
