The following "Letter from the Editors" (printed in the program for last night's event) set the tone for the entire evening:"...Many people say that this a politically apathetic campus.Well, they certainly got THAT part right!
They say that LMU students don't care don't care about worldly issues. The critics believe that this evening will be a failure. They think that students won't show up for this once in a lifetime event. They think that we wont't be mature enough to allow the speakers to express their views. They don't think that this university is ready to join the elites.
But on Thursday night, we the student body of LMU will once again prove our critics wrong.
The university is having an awakening, and this event will be an indication of what's to come.
We will greet two of the biggest names in politics with dignity and respect..."It must be a RELIGIOUS school thing. :o)If last night's event was a test, LMU passed with flying colors! Not only did they prove that they had good manners, they turned out in MUCH LARGER numbers than the nay-sayers had predicted, completely overwhelming the tiny venue chosen this FIRST of what now may be MANY similar events.
Both Ann and the Serpenthead seem to have been surprised by the very different (i.e., thoughtful, and RESPECTFUL) kind of audience that they encountered last night during their "back-to-back" appearances at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles last night, which were part of "First Ammendment Week," sponsored by the LMU student newspaper, the Loyolan.
Not sure about Carville, but I understand that Ann generally encounters a MUCH DIFFERENT reception on a OTHER college campi -- where she has had to deal with pie-throwing goons, and disruptors blasting loud music through the PA system during her speech, to drown out her voice. Our small group of FReepers (and FRiends of Ann) who were able to get inside saw virtually NO protestors outside, and only TWO (rather lame) attempts to heckle her inside...More soon.
Q. "Why are these men smiling?"
Great report -- thanks for sharing.
The fury you see unleashed at conservatives from secular university students comes straight from Hell.
There used to be crosses in every classroom and some of the priests started class with prayer, I hope that is still the case.
I am very happy that you visited Loyola and had a good experience there, I loved my time there.
From the way the two speakers are dressed you can determine who respects their audience and who thinks they are better than their audience.
Strangely, there is no mention of her graduating with honors from an Ivy League college of Law, or her status as a lawyer.
Wowzers! The YAFfers are doing excellent work these days. :-)Hi, CCC!
While the Young Americas Foundation was instrumental in arrranging for Ann's visit here, and while I understand that they paid for PART of Ann's fee for this appearance......it was Natalie Nordseth (and the REST of the staff at the Loyolan) who did MOST of the heavy lifting on this event.
As I understand it, the YAFers usuallly co-ordinate with the local College Republicans to invite Ann, but in this case, the LMU CRs were not (yet!) organized well enough to do it.In the words of Braveheart's William Wallace:"We shall have to remedy that."

That last photo, of the audience...LOL!
Q. "Why are these men smiling?"
That would be THESE lucky guys, who got in to see Ann - fourth row, center!
Jeffers did not get the "wear a BRIGHT RED shirt, so that Ann can see us" memo. :o)

THANK YOU for that COMPREHENSIVE report, Steve! To: Republicus2001
During Carvilles opening statements he was explaining his credentials. Carville was bragging about his 4.0 in school. Which we found out was his blood alcohol level during graduation. It didnt seem to bother him that he always got Ds and Fs in college because in the end it really didnt matter after what the demarcate party has done for him today. One student stood up and told him how she wanted to be just like him, there was a large applause in the audience. He explained how he was very disappointed that he didnt take a masturbation class because he would have gotten an A in that class.
Carville stated many times how corrupt the Bush administration is as though it ONLY happens in the Bush administration. One example of his many lies was when he stated that only one person from the Clinton administration went to prison.
To his credit Carville was straight forward and on point. In short much easier understood than Coulter. Coulter made dozens of good and interesting points but she said them in such a way you REALLY had to keep up with politics to know what she was saying. Even my wife had to ask me what she was talking about a couple times.
There was some heckling from the back against Coulter and a staged walk out of about 10 people. Most of the people were respectful but there was some serious anger in the room.
I believe Ann Coulter is great, I never seen her live before tonight. I think she was distracted or tired. She did make a great comeback when one student said she was taking a critical thinking and rhetorical reading class and yet she was reading from a pamphlet and really knocking Coulter hard (the student took it to a personal level.) Ann simply asked her why are you reading from a pamphlet if you are taking that class?
Another comeback was when a student asked a long question part of it asking her, why she is trying to take womens right of speech away? Coulter responded paraphrased, why would I do that? That is how I earn my living and everything else you asked is simply moronic.
Twice Ann didnt answer the question that was given to her. This is why I think she was tired or distracted. For example one guy stood up and gave her a softball question, in my opinion. He said, Carville and yourself show the extremes in both parties, what about people like me that are in the middle?
Ann answered by saying how lunatic fringe the Demarcate party is today. A student stood up (out of order) and said, You dont listen, do you? Why dont you answer his question? Ann replied, I did.
The loudest response of the night came when a student asked Ann something like, I respect the first amendment but dont you feel anything when you use your rhetoric to hurt good people while you are making millions from what you say? (I dont remember what Ann said but she did NOT answer the question.) Here is an article on this in the Laloyolan (school paper):
I believe Ann Coulter is great, I never seen her live before tonight.Well, she has been rather busy putting the final touches on her NEW BOOK.
I think she was distracted or tired...

So, do you guys plan to see Ann when she comes to Washington, DC on February 10?
I was there at the Santa Monica event! Yip!
Another comeback was when a student asked a long question part of it asking her, why she is trying to take womens right of speech away? The student was referring to some of the inflammatory quotes that had been printed in the program that was handed out as everyone arrived, like THIS one:
...On women's suffrageThe FIRST time that Ann replied to that question, she did not understand why it had been asked, as she had NOT made that particular statement in the speech she had just given, and she did not know about the quotes that had been printed in the program.
"It would be a much better country if women did not vote. That is simply a fact.
In fact, in every presidential election since 1950 -- except Goldwater in '64 -- the Republicans would have won, if only the men had voted."
Later, she came back to that question, providing a SHORT answer, and a LONGER answer.
I just gave a speech praising the liberation of Afghanistan and Iraq -- where MILLIONS of women are now able to vote for the very first time.LONGER answer:
Regardless of what you think about allowing women to vote -- it is an irrefutable fact that if only MEN had voted, Republicans would have won every Presidential election in the last fifty years -- except LBJ -- so we only would have lost ONE war. :o)This is merely acknowledging the so-called "gender gap," and the fact that Democrats have consistently been weak on national defense.Divorce, she explained, and the dramatic increase in promiscuous premarital sex, are the primary causes of this "gender gap."
If women cannot depend on MEN, then they have to depend on GOVERNMENT -- so as more single mothers vote for more social spending, to replace the support that they are NOT getting from the men in their lives, the Democrats win.
I was there at the Santa Monica event! Yip!I remember!
Sorry that we could not invite you to THIS event, as we had a DEVIL of a time just getting THREE of us (non-students) in. :(As I noted previously, THIS event was just a test. NOBODY (at the university) thought that so many people would show up for a POLITICAL event, particularly for a political event with a CONSERVATIVE speaker.
Now that they know that it will work, Natalie plans to have OTHER political events -- in a MUCH LARGER venue -- and to allow NON-students to attend.
I told her that she could charge non-students $10 or $20 each, and make the next event a FUNDRAISER for the university, or for their college newspaper.
And, even if the Loyolan does not want to do this -- the newly-invigorated LMU CRs will! :o)
How is this?Yowsah!
Carville's 'lovely' choice of evening attire is possibly a throw back to his multiple years as an undergraduate student at LSU (Louisiana State University) and his proximity to what used to be New Orleans and Mardis Gras.
Ol' Serpenthead was just TARGET PRACTICE for Ann's NEXT appearance in Los Angeles: with Al FrankenFraud.

Ann is still a cutie, but in that pic she's showing her age a bit. Not saying she's old, not at all, but she is showing her age (44) moreso than she had even a couple years ago. Maybe it's just not a great picture. She also needs to dye her roots!!
...is that you have to buy ALL FOUR parts of that "Speakers Series" -- at $225 per person -- just to see her squash Al Franken like a bug.It may be possible, however, to arrange for some ALTERNATIVE way to see Ann when she is in L.A. in March......since she will have MORE TIME, as her new book will allready be on its way to the publishers. We are WORKING on it. :o)
Carvilles got a face like he has played in one too many rugby matches.
Ann is still a cutie, but in that pic she's showing her age a bit.Bite your TONGUE!
Ann still look FABULOUS -- in person! It was all the harsh lighting -- from the lights which were designed for playing BASKETBALL!
Carville also looked more ghastly than usual -- see above. :o)
It may just be the lighting but Carvel's face looks thin the kind of look that people with wasting diseases get.See my post 83, above -- about the harsh (basketball court) lighting.
I mainly disagree with him and he does come up with some tough-nut arguments but I worry for anyone who is sick.
...the harsh (basketball court) lightingFrom the pre-FReep thread, that would be THIS place:
Rec Center Back Court-Burns
|This facility is located on the 2nd floor of the Burns Recreation Center. This large basketball court can be converted into any set up style desired.|
|Maximum Capacity||500 (theater style)|
Carville's got a face like he has played in one too many rugby matches.LOL!
It's all the meanness in his SOUL, now manifesting itself in his BODY, imho.
Ann still look FABULOUS -- in person!O.K., I was posting rapidly, in anger. :o)
That obviously SHOULD have been:
Ann still looks FABULOUS -- in person!
You do have a point. Gymnasium lighting is never flattering.
I'll take it back!
YUCK. That is a "LEFT" handed compliment if I ever heard one.I agree.
More of a lust-based insult.
I was not even going to post about that guy, but since Clark did, I thought that I would comment on it.
Sorry that we could not invite YOU to this event, either. Here is the link that classic "Ann Coulter" thread:
I had to keep this event REALLY quiet -- which as you know, is a HUGE challenge for someone with my personality -- but we had no other choice, beacuse of the tiny venue, and the university's adversion to inviting the general public.
NEXT time, however -- in March -- we intend to find a BETTER way to allow FReepers to interact with Ann, like we did the LAST time that she was out here. :o)

NEXT time, however -- in March -- we intend to find a BETTER way to allow FReepers to interact with Ann, like we did the LAST time that she was out here. :o)This SHOULD be relatively easy to do, since she will have a little more free time for us in March, as her new book will be finished by then.
And, she SHOULD be a lot less apprehensive about how good our security will be, since we now have a TRACK RECORD for hosting an incident-free, successful event -- like the one at "Level One" after her "Late, Late Show" taping. And, ever since the "pie-throwing," "boom box disrupting" encounters at her recent public appearances, she now travels with a BODYGUARD -- to protect her, not from US, but from anyone who might find out about where we intended to meet Ann, and try to cause trouble.
Plus, we can always invite her friends with the MARINE CORPS (above) back, to provide a little EXTRA security for that potential future meeting. :o)
...she now travels with a BODYGUARD -- to protect her, not from US, but from anyone who might find out about where we intended to meet Ann, and try to cause trouble...
But it is good that people listened politely and respectfully to both. You got THAT right!
I often think that the one thing that defeats the left is when we can get people to actually listen to what they are saying;
the Dems have had some talented operatives and bomb throwers, but when folks will actually LISTEN and think about what they are saying THEN they realize that the only things Clinton did that worked were stolen from the Republicans, etc...
It WAS a challenge, however, for those of us non-LMU students -- who are by our natures a little less well-mannered -- not to jeer and harass Mr. Carville. :o)
We were VERY restrained -- for the most part.
Except that Jeffers could not prevent himself from coughing out a muffled "bullsh!t" when Carville was ranting on and on about the wonderful "Clinton economy."
Great report -- thanks for sharing. Thanks, Angelwood!
I learned just about everything that I know from the "Masters of the FReep" - here:
P.S. But I still like you, Ron. LOL.
There used to be crosses in every classroom and some of the priests started class with prayer,Wow.
I hope that is still the case.
That's GREAT! And right in the heart of secular Los Angeles, too!
Let's hope that the government folks with L.A. County don't find out, though. :o)
Though Stewart's line is a bit simpler: Mess-O-Potamia
Let's hope that the government folks with L.A. County don't find out, though. :o)See also, from www.LAcounty.info:
After how she trashed Harriet Miers and Judge Roberts I don't think highly of her.I understand.
MANY posters on this forum were disappointed with Ann's TACTICS, even if they agreed with her MISSION: insuring a conservative, "originalist" Supreme Court -- during this "once in a generation" opportunity to correct the many unfortunate PAST appointments.
The current composition of the Supreme Court is just TOO IMPORTANT to take any chances, so I understand Ann's PASSION about it.
And, Justice Alito -- with his extensive public record supporting conservative principles -- is MUCH less likely to become another "Souter" than the relatively untested (at least in any PUBLIC forum) Harriet Miers, right?
(Politics is a contact sport, and the RATs have made the judicial system EXTREMELY political, as their last chance to force their agenda upon the rest of us.
We CANNOT let them win.)
