I had a similar experience thiry-five years ago in Mobile, Alabama... I was there for three days and never saw a girl that wasn't at least pretty and most were gorgeous. I thought I might write a story about them killing or locking up all the ugly girls.

I believe that Alabama has produced the most Miss Americas.

I notice you neither sourced this quote, nor replied to any responses to your post. I googled that quote and came up with nothing referencing Miss Oklahoma.

I gave up watching these things when I was a young boy because they'd have 49 beautiful ladies and one dog-faced honk-nosed New Yorker and the New Yorker would always finish first or second. I realized then the whole thing must be rigged.

I used to know a girl from Mobile and she was just about as pretty as a girl gets. She lived in one of those large houses on Government street.

I remember stopping at a Stuckeys in Mississippi and a girl coming out and pumping gas. She was absolutely stunning. I thought, goodness, this girl is prettier than most movie stars, tastefully made up, and here she is pumping gas.

Thanks for the thread. I totally missed the whole thing; didn't know it was even happening until I heard today about Miss Oklahoma.

Just goes to prove that my contra-jinx is still working and I thought I'd gotten rid of it. Makes sense that she is an OU student and my contra-jinx is such that I am not allowed to watch my OU Sooners win or even score most of their touchdowns.

For the past two years (and at other times in the distant past), they only "shine" and do well (as in, beat Texas) when I am away from the radio, TV or stadium, or even just temporarily indisposed.

Of course, Miss Oklahoma, a stunning Sooner, won her contest when I was nowhere in sight and couldn't even root or pray for her! Aaack, this is getting to be really aggravating.

Congrats to her, anyway! I promise I will ignore and avoid her all year, so she has a very prosperous and fun reign!

Now that's Mr. Oklahoma. Soon to be Mr. America. But I saw him every night on an infomercial -- yikes, that must be how CNN got him. I contra-jinxed him by watching!

Don't forget Susan Powell and Shawntel Smith. We even had one back in the 1920s from Tulsa. And Anita Bryant was a 2nd runner-up; I remember that one well. 58 or 59.

Five years ago, I did a "drive across America" and spent a night in Stroud a few weeks after a tornado hit the town; part of the hotel was damaged, too.

Oh yes, Stroud. A well known stop on the Mother Road!

It's midway on the Turner Turnpike between OKC and Tulsa and used to have (might still) a walkway over the highway, so one could park on the westbound side and still go to the old Howard Johnson's across the turnpike on the south side. My favorite stop back then!

They have sister city "Stroud"'s in the UK and Australia -- and have rolling pin throwing contests in all three on the same day in July.

Interesting. Yup, driving across the Nation with a friend. We decided to stop in Tulsa for the night. One problem: every hotel was booked due to a gun show scheduled that weekend -- rooms were booked well in advance and nothing was available. So, it was onward to Stroud. The next morning, daylight came, and I looked out the Best Western window and saw piles of rubble. The hotel restaurant was one of the few establishments open for locals.
