NBC Cancels Emmy-Winning 'West Wing' After Seven Seasons, Makes Several Midseason Moves
PASADENA, Calif. Jan 22, 2006 The new president on "The West Wing" will be a real short-timer: NBC announced Sunday it was pulling the plug on the Emmy-winning political drama after seven seasons in May.
NBC, struggling to regain its footing after the worst season in its history, also outlined several midseason schedule changes including the moves of popular dramas "Law & Order" and "Las Vegas."
"The West Wing" announcement wasn't much of a surprise. Although this season's story line with a presidential campaign involving a Democrat played by Jimmy Smits and Republican portrayed by Alan Alda has been strong critically, ratings have sunk with its move to Sunday nights.

The decision to cancel it was made before actor John Spencer, who played former presidential chief of staff Leo McGarry, died of a heart attack Dec. 16, said Kevin Reilly, NBC entertainment president.
"There's a point when you look at the ratings and say, it feels like it's time," Reilly said.
The series finale will be May 14, preceded by a one-hour retrospective. The campaign to replace the fictional Josiah Bartlet as president will be settled, NBC said.
Producers Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme, who created the show and guided it through its early years, will not be involved in the finale, Reilly said.
"The West Wing" won four Emmy Awards for best television drama in a row for its tales of political intrigue. At its prime, it also offered NBC two valuable benefits: critical acclaim and the most upscale audience on television, an important drawing point for advertisers.

Only to replaced with "Crossing Brokeback Cowboys".
i'm so saaaad
That's rather amusing. What do Kiwis consider to be propaganda within "The West Wing"?
They get all their ideas from the newspapers, they won't run out.
The people who made "The Book of Daniel" chose to spend GE's money to advance their own anti-Christian agenda. In any other industry that would have managerial heads rolling.
If their ratings continue to tank heads will roll... they took one of their best shows (ER) and tried to make it political this year. I think they must have received complaints because they backed off, but for a few weeks they had Danny Glover guesting and it was painful.
Ah, so it's a science-fiction show.....
It needs to be in the Friday night Sci-Fi line up.
I love waking up to good news.
This may be a good week after all.
Never watched it. Heard about it, mostly on FR...
Ha, ha, ha, ha!
At least the Lefties still have what's-her-name as a President.
I keep hearing about that show, must have been good.
EXACTLY! I saw it about 10 times, and that pissed me of to no end when it happened. They would also show the Right's perspective, but not in total, and the Left view would win out. It was, however, very watchable for Conservatives. You just had to put up with 51% political idiocy
What is a "television drama in a row"?
Are they using "row" in the English meaning of "fight" or "argument"???
Back in the old days, most Freepers thought that true patriotism entailed "disrespect for the institutions of government." Like Reagan, they advoated the credo that "government is the problem, not the solution." Those days are long gone.
Last night's episode had a nuke scare in L.A. - close enough?
"Commander in Chief" is a trashy tabloid compared to "The West Wing" - so all of you who hated Martin Sheen on this were just getting started.
I noticed that too - not the best syntax obviously.
More like 99% ; )
Good news - I had heard "Commander in Chief" was winning its timeslot.
I never watched it knowing it was liberal propaganda. At one time I would have watched for Martin Sheen but when Sheen got preachy and political I could not abide him anymore. Same with the rest of the Hollywood libs. I would never pay to see them. Susan Sarandon, Glyneth Paltrow, George Clooney, Danny Glover, Jamie Foxx, Robert Redford, and Steven Speilberg. And since Buttcrack Mountain came out, I have been able to keep food down.
Martin Sheen got preachy and political in, oh, 1969 - so I'm not sure when you stopped watching him ; )
Seriously, I do not pay to see any of those actors either - if I have to go to the theatre with any libs, I buy a tickets for something else like The Passion or Chronicles of Narnia and then go see the other movie - since it's on T.V. though, I don't have a problem adding it to TiVo. Maybe if we were a Neilson ratings household, I would hold your opinion.
Since Buttcrack Moutain came out, I haven't been able to keep food down. Now I'm waiting for the new CNN line up. Cnn is bringing in Glen beck and J.C. Watts. I hope those two hold up and not get rolled over like Scarborough on MSNBC. I just can't watch him or Tucker Carlson. MSNBC defangs their conservatives making them boring. Only Michael Savage and Allen Keyes were good on MSNBC and they got rid of Keyes for Donahue who tanked big time.
Martin Sheen has been bleeding heart liberal along time but it is me who has changed politically. Things that didn't bother me before outrage me now. The inconsistencies of the liberals grates me now and believe me, I'm the last person in the world who would have ever considered voting Republican. However, when it comes to seeking common sense in the two major political parties, the dems come up short.
Anyone have a picture of Martin Sheen walking down a sidewalk with duct tape over his mouth they can paste on here?
One if funniest things I've seen from Hollyweird in a long time.
I am not faulting you for being outraged my that at all - each battle in our fight against liberalism needs its own general ; )
Damn! Won't be able to ignore it for an eighth year!
It already is on BRAVO.....
Me too. I'll take Lenny and Benjamin Bratt or Lenny and Chris Noth any day. There was still some irreverence in the show then.
It has been proven that watching these shows actually lowers one's intelligence!
If only the blight of other liberal cultural initiatives could be removed as easily as cancelling a television program.
Sheen will have to find some other way to tilt at windmills with his misdirected self-righteousness.
ER went political a long time ago, when half of the female characters came out as lesbians. I used to watch religiously but haven't seen it in two years now. Is it still on?
I never watched one episode, so I won't miss it! lol.
I watched part of a show the first year, and remembered why I hate Martin Sheen. I changed the channel and that was it.
Can he be helped?
Fox had it?? I only saw it on the Sci Fi channel.
Same here. Didn't hold any interest for me.
I liked to watch it when most of the action was in the White House. I was interested in the workings of the place. But when they used the whole last season on the election, it got really boring. I also couldn't stand Toby. And the banter between Josh & his assistant was stupid.
I enjoyed his performance in The Moonshine War. He even carried a firearm !
That movie must have been made prior to his estrogen replacement therapy.
It was initially a Fox show. Then the fools at Fox decided to drop it, even though the fan base is still continuing to grow. DVD sales for the programme are huge in both America and overseas.
Actually one of their characters came out as a lesbian. Her 'partner' died and she is hardly every shown on the show these days. Yes, it is still on..
You go dig up the FBI statistics. They had nothing to do with Law and Order. You are shy 1 knee in knee jerk. Do I have to explain that to you?
The replacement will be a show about the director of FEMA, starring Sean Penn.
