Oh, oh let me modify my first reply. I'm arguing on two threads and got confused. I'm not arguing about who is actually to blame for government fiscal problems. I'm arguing about who will be blamed if the economy tanks...and why.
To: liberallarry
The authors don't. And they provide a simple statistic which they claim supports their position.Such statistics defy both history and common sense. Of course there are additional factors beyond taxation and the size of government that affect economies, but when you compare two otherwise similar countries the one with the lower taxes and smaller government is invariably the more wealthy of the two. Whether it's East and West Germany, Canada and the US, China and Taiwan, North and South Korea, wherever, the freer economy is always more productive. Therefore I'm quite sceptical about the economic benefits of high taxation.
I will grant you that deficit spending is just as bad and Bush has certainly managed to rack up some large deficits.

Oops! Seems Thomas Sowell disagrees with me about the top 10% being rich (which means he's right and I'm wrong!!). From an
article he wrote for Jewish World Review:
And do you ever wonder why those who are making so much noise about the rich don't just come right out and tell us what kind of money they are talking about? Instead, we hear about the top 10 percent or the top 5 percent. But why so squeamish about saying how much money that represents? There is a reason for all this noise about the rich ---- and for all the silence about how much money is involved.
Talking about the rich is politically very useful for whipping up envy and getting support for heavy taxes. But the incomes of most people in the top 5 or 10 percent are a lot less than most Americans would consider rich. If the incomes of all the people in an American household adds up to $72,000, that puts them in the top 10 percent of all households. But, when a husband and wife make $36,000 apiece, most of us would not consider them rich. Nor would we be likely to think that putting heavy taxes on them would be a good idea.

larry,
Looks to me like you've limited your comments to to the "extremists." There are more "mainstream" thinkers on here than you apparently realize. Maybe you should spend a little more time here than at DU.

It was their worst nightmare coming true - the U.S. Senate has voted to put a conservative jurist on the Supreme Court, replacing a woman who they could depend on in a pinch to vote their way a lot of the time. Alito and Rehnquist was an even swap. It is possible Roberts and O'Connor may be an even swap also. Take away the hysterics and the reality is that not much has changed.
President Bush has three more years left in his term as the nation's chief executive and he most probably will have an opportunity to name at least one more justice to the high court. And when he does, you can bet he'll nominate another conservative.
Bet? You say bet??? He nominated Harriet Miers!!! It was the conservative activists who forced him to dump her and nominate Alito. I would not "bet" on that track record.
That's what he promised he'd do and he has now kept that promise twice by nominating rock-solid conservative jurists to serve on the Supreme Court.
Roberts a "rock-solid conservative? Two poionts.........1] that is a big question mark, and 2], we don't have a track record on him yet.
The author is wrong. Bush did not nominate two "rock-solid conservatives". Roberts is an unknown that we HOPE will be a conservative. Alito was not Bush's choice--Harriet Miers was. Alito was forced upon the president.
Bush nominated two justices and neither Roberts (as of yet) nor Harriet Miers were "rock-solid conservatives" like a JRB or Jones or Owen or Luttig, etc.

The President must be having a good day, Tread is here to piss on the parade.
except that, as usual, it NEVER works for him.

PROTESTANT FUNDAMENTALISTS ARE NOT AGAINST CONTRACEPTION !!
Liberals like to say that, but it is NOT true. I am a fundamentalist. I have a Master of Divinity degree from a Southern Baptist Seminary, and am now a Deacon in an Assembly of God church. I have been a Fundamentalist Christian for over 50 years, so I know our doctrine very well.
We have no problem with contraception prior to conception. The pill, foam, gel, condoms, etc are all fine.
So your argument evaporates because you don't know what you are talking about.

Their share of the pie? So there's a pie now? That would indicate a limit on the possible wealth to be made in this nation.
What is that limit?

Let's not forget the revelation the Howard Dean has left the DNC is very poor financial shape and there's lots of infighting going on right now.

Most likely so, mainly because of Alito's confirmation to the Supreme Court and the SOTU by Bush. Thry're most likely imploding over at the dipsy DUmpster.

I hate to rain on your parade but liberals will return to power sooner than you think.
Oh yeah, they're doing a bang up job, that is why there approval ratings are in the toilet and they have lost the Congress, the White House, and the SCOTUS. They're anti-military, against the WOT, and even Osama himself quotes there message to support his agenda. The party is in the middle of a melt down and a hostile takeover by the extremists on the left they now cater to as their base.
Talk to me when they actually win something.
