Perhaps, but there's a reason it's illegal.

There's a reason why gun ownership is illegal to in many states/counties towns.

That doesn't mean its a good reason, or even a constitutional one.

Last year researchers from New Zealand reported that regular cannabis smokers had almost double the normal risk of schizophrenia. Particular concern has focused on the strong "skunk" variety of cannabis.

Not that I'm all up on the slang that you kids are using today, but isn't "skunk weed" the crappy weak kind?

paranoia, YES! I agree.

but not psychotic (at least not when I was smoking the stuff).

I put forth this thought again: How powerful is marijuana now compared to 20/30 years ago?

And I do think that long-term cannabis abuse can lead to psychosis. Just like long-term alcohol abuse can change one's brain as well.

So if cannabis causes mental illness in some cases, and that is the justification for making weed illegal, then I guess we should outlaw booze as well. And we won't even need to amend the Constitution this time - SCOTUS has found that the feds have this power under the Commerce Clause and the Necessary and Proper Clause.

This is some real deep bravo sierra. "Medical experts concluded that he was mentally unstable at the time of the assault due to "cannabis psychosis...lawyers hope that her decision to go public about her trauma will encourage the government, police and courts to rethink their approach to cannabis misuse.

Uh huh, yeah, right, got it. A woman is attacked by a nutjob who smoked marijauna therefore it wan't the nutjob who did the attacking it was the marijauna. I bet the kook drove an SUV too.

Simple answers for simple minds. Hey try this perscription...if you don't like that one we have 5 or 6 more you might like. Side effects? Well sure but we've got some other pills to fix the side effects and if they don't work...

"How powerful is today's marijuana compared to 20/30 years ago?"

It depends on what marijuana you have now and what you had then. There's no way, really, to do a comparison. The sinsemilla I grew (for my own personal use) would probably stand up pretty well against today's typical weed.

OTOH, there are some genetically manipulated strains out there now that would have knocked the roach clip out of my mouth had it been available at the time.

There is more potent weed available these days than back then, but most smokers aren't smoking it, any more than most were smoking really righteous stuff back then.

It matters not, though, since you can always smoke more of the crappy stuff to make up for the lower potency.

NOTE: I gave up smoking it in May, 1973, and haven't touched a joint since then.

Last year researchers from New Zealand reported that regular cannabis smokers had almost double the normal risk of schizophrenia. Feel free to disagree, of course. But the claim is that cannabis use may increase risk of acquiring mental illness.

Nutty people are just more likely to use drugs. This article is trying to make you believe the converse of this.

Thai stick, sens-uh-miya (I never knew how to spell that), Maui Wowee, Panama Red, all that good stuff has always been available.

I have never bought the argument that today's weed is so much stronger than yesterday's weed.

Ragweed has also always been available.

"Had a college roomate chronic pot smoker. All he did was sit around, eat Ben & Jerry's ice cream, listen to "Phish" and work on intricate model airplanes. About as dangerous as an accordian. About as useful, too."

I am forwarding your insensitive and actionable comments to the American Accordionists' Association.

Cause-and-effect is missing, however.

Schizophrenics have a high tendancy to be alcoholics and abuse other drugs, not just pot.

It's an attempt at self-medication to calm the demons in their minds.

Becasue weed is still illegal I really can't believe any of the data that I read about this. I suspect it's just more rationalization. Personal experience, I find little difference. But hey, maybe I'm psychotic, the only change I notice is the price.

Good example are American Indians, they have smoked Pot, injested peyote and were never violent HOWEVER being introduced to FIREWATER, alcohol they have one of the worst alcohol problems on the reservations.

Many in the medical field would like to see pot legalized.

Drinking too much water and upseting your electrolytes can cause hallucinations and pychosis, followed by death.
