Low-fat diet may be low in benefit
The Washington Post ^ | February 7, 2006 | ROB STEIN

WASHINGTON – Low-fat diets do not protect women against heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer or colon cancer, a major study has found, contradicting what has been promoted as one of the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle.

The eight-year study of nearly 50,000 middle-age and elderly women – by far the largest, most definitive test of cutting fat from the diet – did not find any clear evidence that it reduced their risks, undermining more than a decade of advice from many doctors.

The findings run contrary to the belief that had prompted health authorities to begin prominent campaigns to get people to eat less fat and the food industry to line grocery shelves with low-fat cookies, chips and other products.

Ok, I have done the research and ran the nubmers. My study proves conclusively that being born is the most dangerous thing that can happen to you. 100 percent of people who are born, die. Most of them die before they are 100 years old and all die before the reach 200 years old. We must stop births!/SAR

I still do the Atkins.

What is an Atkins. Is that a new workout machine like BowFlex?

I like artichokes in drawn butter mixed with garlic an lemmon, roast beef, mashed potatoes, with deep thick gravy, spinache drenched in butter and salt and pepper. Dessert is blueberry-apple pie with Breyer's vanilla ice cream and Creme Boulliet liquieur. And I weigh the same today, at 56, as I did 40 years ago.

This summer, we're going to have a lobster fest. Lobsters drenched in drawn butter, clams, egg salad, and cole slaw. A dozen bottles of Black Swan Chardonay. And a few pounds of strawberries with real whipped cream.

In between eating meals we eat NOTHING.

Now don't anybody go gettin' the idea that the scientific scare merchants have also jumped the shark with their flimsy global warming data. Nope, that theory's solid gold. </sarc>

A little while ago I came to this conclusion on my own. From then on, natural fats in moderation and no more obsessing.

Then I went out and bought one of these:

(Got the two-stick version, fits a pack of Lurpak perfectly. Go Denmark!)

It won't be the nail in the coffin, as stated, as that will take another 20 years now for this to be turned around. As a nurse I have said for years that it's not the fat content, but the content of the fat that matters. I have a very high total cholesterol, but extremely high HDL. I eat all the eggs I want, red meat, whatever. I do avoid margarine, most cooking oils except olive oil and p-nut oil for my popcorn. I use olive oil or butter in all my baking, even use lard in my pie crusts. My doctor says that he couldn't ask for a better HDL/LDL ratio, so keep my diet the same.

What most people don't realize, too, is that low-fat products are very high in carbohydrate, which is converted to fat and stored in the body.

Me too. I went years working nights, and eating high carb food. I got up to 400 (approx) Now I've been working days and doing atkins for almost 2 years. Now I'm under 220. I'm very happy with Atkins, but so strange eating green beans (w. flaxseed meal sprinkled on top) for Breakfast.

It seems like everything points to genetics. Prostate Cancer runs in my family and no matter how many Saw Palmetto supplements I take I wonder by what % my odds of getting the cancer will decrease. I am starting to think not very much.

Maybe this study will get Krispy Kreme stock moving again. The stock has tanked in the last few years as the low carb craze has persisted. While eating non fat foods may not decrease your odds of cancer, I still believe it impacts your weight. I'm no scientist, but I think carbs play 10 times the role in weight gain compared to fatty foods

We have noticed that the area Krispy Kreme is still quite busy. Krispy Kremes are also available in the grocery store, Walmart, and the various convenience stores. We have wondered if the trouble with Krispy Kreme is their business model. When they first hit the news and were not available here, we looked into their franchise arrangements. There were, at that point, no longer any US franchises available. All new stores were promised to existing franchise holders. Further research showed that the price of a franchise was somewhere north of US$700k just to open, with no information available on percentage royalties, et al. Immediately after that, they swamped the market in every region we visited.

Add to that we stopped eating them because they really aren't that great.

Agreed. And they are terrible in the summer, when the icing runs and the dough gets soggy from it.

IMO, the best doughnuts ever are Spudnuts. There are no Spudnut shops left out here, but the recipe is all over the Internet.

Because of Type 2 diabetes I made some radical diet changes about 18 months ago. I cut out carbohydrates and now eat a diet that has a very high fat and fiber content. I also started to exercise more. I have lost weight and my cholesterol levels are so low my doctor regards me as his "poster patient". The net is that (in my case) weight loss and exercise were the key to lower cholesterol, in spite of high levels of fat in my diet.
