I've meant to ask. If you have ammo in your car or truck (perhaps you've just purchased it) and you stop for lunch, and it's a summer day, can the high temps inside your car cause the round(s) to discharge? Seriously.

Guns are Constitutionally protected.

They are not protected because people hunt.
They are not protected because people enjoy time on the range.
They ARE protected for reasons of self-defense.

Being unloaded and locked in the trunk diminshes their ability to aid in self-defense.

Firearms owners would be permitted to carry unloaded weapons in their trunks, even if they don't have a hunting license,

Does this mean it's presently illegal? Jeez Louise, and people call California liberal.

Michigan Statewide Handgun Regulations

Statewide Handgun Regulations

(Note: The guidelines listed below may not apply to a person having a concealed pistol license or a person specifically exempt by law from a concealed pistol license and carrying their handgun in accordance with their license or exemption.)

Carrying of Handguns in the Field
While in the field, handguns must be carried in plain view. Carrying a handgun in a holster in plain view is permitted.

Transportation of Handguns
You may transport your registered handguns while en route to and from your hunting or target shooting area; however, handguns, including BB guns larger than .177 caliber and all pellet guns must be unloaded and in a closed case designed for the storage of firearms in the trunk of the vehicle. If the vehicle does not have a trunk, the handgun must be unloaded and in a closed case designed for the storage of firearms and cannot be readily accessible to any occupant of the vehicle.

It is a crime for certain felons to possess firearms, including rifles and shotguns, in Michigan. For more information regarding statewide handgun regulations, obtaining a concealed pistol license or Michigan concealed weapons and firearms laws, contact your local police department or visit the Michigan State Police website at www.michigan.gov/msp.

Yeah, that'll be a lot of use in case of a carjacking.

yanno, this is actually a redundant law. you can have a weapon in your vehicle for transport for any lawful purpose. remember that MI is an open carry state, therefore transporting it anywhere can be considered "lawful."
also, AG ruled that if you have CCW, you may store weapons in your trunk anywhere, including parking lots of gun free zones.
they don't need to pass a new bill, they need to rescind the old one.

I always wondered what the point is of carrying a gun in the trunk of your car. When that fellow snatches your door open at the red light, are you going to freeze the frame for a sec while you run around to retrieve your piece from the trunk?

This is what happens when the Government decides to infringe on the Second Amendment.

NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT (EXCERPT)

Act 451 of 1994

Sec. 43513.

(1) A person may carry, transport, or possess a firearm, a bow and arrow, or a crossbow without a hunting license while at or going to and from a recognized rifle or target range, trap, or skeet shooting ground, or archery range if the firearm or bow and arrow or crossbow, while being carried or transported, is as follows:

(a) The firearm is unloaded in both barrel and magazine and either enclosed in a case or carried in the trunk of a vehicle.

(b) The bow or crossbow is unstrung, enclosed in a case, or carried in the trunk of a vehicle.

(2) Regardless of whether the person has a license or it is open season for the taking of game, a person may carry, transport, possess or discharge a firearm, a bow and arrow, or a crossbow if all of the following apply:

(a) The person is not taking or attempting to take game but is engaged in 1 or more of the following activities:

(i) Target practice using an identifiable, artificially constructed target or targets.

(ii) Practice with silhouettes, plinking, skeet, or trap.

(iii) Sighting-in the firearm, bow and arrow, or crossbow.

(b) The person is, or is accompanied by or has the permission of, either of the following:

(i) The owner of the property on which the activity under subdivision (a)(i), (ii), or (iii) is taking place.

(ii) The lessee of that property for a term of not less than 1 year.

(c) The owner or lessee of the property does not receive remuneration for the activity under subdivision (a)(i), (ii), or (iii).

(3) A person may carry or possess an unloaded weapon at any time if the person is traveling to or from or participating in an historical reenactment.

And here is a link to the proposed changes:
