(Ithaca) Feminists encourage safe sex (hand out candy and condoms)

Ithaca College Feminists will observe National Condom Week by providing programs and information about health risks in sexual relationships from Tuesday to Feb. 21. “Sexual health is an important part of being in charge and in control of one’s own body,” said Laura McKenna, president of the Ithaca College Feminists.

National Condom Week dates back to 1978, when students at the University of California-Berkeley wanted to educate others about the risks inherent in sexual intercourse including AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.

McKenna said ICFeminists will promote National Condom Week through tabling in the Campus Center lobby until tomorrow and on Monday and Tuesday. The club will give out free condoms and information about safe sex, as well as novelty chocolates in the shape of birth control pills.

“Condoms are one of the most shoplifted items because people are too embarrassed to buy them, which also means a lot of couples go without,” McKenna said. “By having them out on a table, it’s a much more low-pressure situation.”

In addition to free condoms and information at the tables in the Campus Center, the club will have a “guessing jar” full of candy and condoms. The person with the most accurate estimate wins the contents of the jar.

The AIDS Working Group was created to provide accurate information about HIV and to prevent its transmission. The group includes students, faculty and representatives from the Hammond Health Center, the Counseling Center and the Office of Residential Life.

ICFeminists’ efforts will culminate Tuesday with an event titled “Valentine’s Day: Make Love, Not Babies,” led by a representative from Planned Parenthood who will discuss birth-control options at noon in Textor 102. McKenna said the main goal of the presentation is to display and explain the number of birth- control options available to students.

“There are a lot of options out there, and the more choices people are aware of, the more likely they are to find one that works best for them,” she said. Karen Eldredge, manager of Health Center operations, said most options are available through the Health Center. Oral contraceptives, as well as patch and injected forms of birth control, can be obtained with a prescription at the center.

Condoms are usually sold at a discounted price through the Health Center but will be free at the Health Center and the Fitness Center on Tuesday.

"Madison is a piker compared to Ithaca..." LOL!

Then I shall learn at the Foot of the Master and know what to start screaming about to the City Council & my local conservatice talk show host if I see them doing something "Ithica-ish." Maybe that way we can fend it off or at least slow down the erosion. Fore-warned is fore-armed!! :)

Ithaca College Feminists ...

I have to admit that I couldn't read anything after those three words.

Mercifully, I lived in the City of Evil *after* Janet Reno was a Cornell undergrad.

I thought feminists did not even want or need a man. It would seem a battery powered, artifical device would be more appropiate then a condom that, would require a man they despise.

Geez, guys, Laura McKenna appears to be an attractive 22-yr-old young lady, who happens to have feminist beliefs. I don't know the girl from Adam's housecat, and I'm not defending her position. But look here for a picture of her from a couple years ago. She's certainly no Janet Reno. On the other hand, her expression looks pretty severe; she's certainly no Britney Spears, either. But maybe she's just p*ssed off at the guys following her. ;-)

I see the problem. She has a big butt and they guys are not paying any attention to her.

You don't pay attention to them -- hell has no wrath then that of a women scorned.

> Uhm, in 1978 a group of students at UC-Berkeley was aware of AIDS? Really? Wow... everything I had heard said it wasn't recognized or identified until 1981, at the earliest.

It was known, although not by the name AIDS, in the late 70's, in the SanFrancisco area. So it's entirely likely that students at UCB would know about the syndrome from its symptoms. So "aware" is accurate, although your term "identify" is only applicable later.

In the early years it went by a number of names, including the "Gay Plague" and others, because it was sprouting up in the gay community. It wasn't named "AIDS" until many years later in the 80's. Any credible book on the history of AIDS would be able to give you more precise dates, but those are approximately correct.

She's the one in pink.

I must confess my aversion to "Ithaca College Feminists" was due to my assumptions about their IQ and attitude.

Good point.

You sure got that right. She does sort of have that attitude about her. She's a senior this year, by her entry in the college directory, BTW. I'm not willing to bet that she mellowed much in the intervening years, either, if she's heading up the Feminist Whatever.

What the hell do they need condoms for? Water balloons?

Maybe they practice safe sex with their vibrators. You know - the ones with the pull-start Briggs and Stratton on the back.

Dang, then she can't be completely offbeat -- a truly maniacal feminist would avoid pink because it's a "girl" color, right? Actually, that group of girls is kinda cute overall. I'd invite 'em to lunch... so long as we didn't talk feminist politics, of course...

> I must confess my aversion to "Ithaca College Feminists" was due to my assumptions about their IQ and attitude.

In my experience, they're no less intelligent than normal, but the attitude is something else entirely. Intelligence doesn't necessarily connote either "being correct" or "having one's sh*t together".

Someone should forward this thread to her.

I once had a piece of my writing posted to a lefty website, and the comments were rather eye-opening.

Only if it doesn't include our email or postal addresses. I don't need the Political Correctness Police visiting my house. Of course, maybe the big American Flag flying on the front porch would scare them away. ;-)

I imagine so. OTOH, I'm not sure that anything she read by a bunch of guys on FR is going to open her eyes. It would more likely only convince her that we're a band of troglodites. Which is pretty funny, actually.

I thought candy was out. Shouldn't they be handing out healthy food, like cucumbers? Oh, wait, never mind.

You know, there's a website that caters to that fetish. Maybe we should send the girls a link... Nah, if we're talking Ithaca College, they probably host that website from the dorm.
