Ithaca College Feminists will observe National Condom Week by providing programs and information about health risks in sexual relationships from Tuesday to Feb. 21. Sexual health is an important part of being in charge and in control of ones own body, said Laura McKenna, president of the Ithaca College Feminists.
National Condom Week dates back to 1978, when students at the University of California-Berkeley wanted to educate others about the risks inherent in sexual intercourse including AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.
McKenna said ICFeminists will promote National Condom Week through tabling in the Campus Center lobby until tomorrow and on Monday and Tuesday. The club will give out free condoms and information about safe sex, as well as novelty chocolates in the shape of birth control pills.
Condoms are one of the most shoplifted items because people are too embarrassed to buy them, which also means a lot of couples go without, McKenna said. By having them out on a table, its a much more low-pressure situation.
In addition to free condoms and information at the tables in the Campus Center, the club will have a guessing jar full of candy and condoms. The person with the most accurate estimate wins the contents of the jar.
The AIDS Working Group was created to provide accurate information about HIV and to prevent its transmission. The group includes students, faculty and representatives from the Hammond Health Center, the Counseling Center and the Office of Residential Life.
ICFeminists efforts will culminate Tuesday with an event titled Valentines Day: Make Love, Not Babies, led by a representative from Planned Parenthood who will discuss birth-control options at noon in Textor 102. McKenna said the main goal of the presentation is to display and explain the number of birth- control options available to students.
There are a lot of options out there, and the more choices people are aware of, the more likely they are to find one that works best for them, she said. Karen Eldredge, manager of Health Center operations, said most options are available through the Health Center. Oral contraceptives, as well as patch and injected forms of birth control, can be obtained with a prescription at the center.
Condoms are usually sold at a discounted price through the Health Center but will be free at the Health Center and the Fitness Center on Tuesday.
What the hell do they need condoms for?
No joke. I doubt that many of them want anything to do with guys.
And I doubt guys want anything to do with them.
I'm picturing big chicks with buzz haircuts, suspenders, and combat boots. Yuck.
Do you have a Ping List? May I be on it? I post stories about Madison, WI on a regular basis, which is equally as Evil as Ithica. ;)
Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.
The movement organized around this belief.
This term is used so loosely. What woman in their right mind today is NOT a feminist???? You don't have to protest or burn bras in order to want to be equal.
Or, is the casual observer to assume there's something under their clothing that requires a condom?
I wonder if there is a National Cigarette Filters week. I wonder if there are people at Ithaca College who promote Safe Smoking during that week?
Nah, I don't, not really.
\ If you really want to use that condom for safe sex, here's how. The woman puts the condom (still in its packaging) between her knees and holds it there until the man is gone.
Pretty much sums up the cultural depravity syndrome being taught to American kids today: sterile, promiscuous sex without consequences, without committment, and without real love. Not a ticket to lasting happiness.
The dykes in North Hampton MA were handing out candy and lit that led to a Gay web-site to grammar school children. They were lucky they didn't get killed.
Why don't they hand them out in the Middle-East?
Why don't they just call this event "Have an orgy on us?" It's what they are hosting.
Consider yourself a member of the ping list...however, Madison is a piker compared to Ithaca
Gee, wonder why?
Must be all that safe sex they're having.
I would respectfully submit that the type of woman that joins a college feminist group and hands out condoms and candy that looks like birth control pills bears little resemblance to the average American woman.
What? Noone else picked up on this little ditty!

Uhm, in 1978 a group of students at UC-Berkeley was aware of AIDS? Really? Wow... everything I had heard said it wasn't recognized or identified until 1981, at the earliest. Just amazing! Why didn't they warn (gay) people? I bet they were in collusion with Bush to help spread the disease! It's all Bush'es fault!
I agree.....the 'activist' is a little different from the 'feminist' per description.
"I would respectfully submit that the type of woman that joins a college feminist group and hands out condoms and candy that looks like birth control pills bears little resemblance to the average American woman."
As an average American woman, I agree with you.
