Bad Ideas For Stopping Iran
The New York Post ^ | February 21, 2006 | AMIR TAHERI

FOOLISH FORCE VS. DUMB DIPLOMACY HAVING resumed uranium enrichment, has the Islamic Republic crossed the Rubicon?

The question is dividing commentators and decision makers both inside and outside Iran.

Some, like former Vice President Al Gore, believe that the Islamic Republic is a threat to world peace and must be checked, by force if necessary. Others — like Gore's former boss, ex-President Bill Clinton — are convinced that the best way to deal with Iran is to negotiate.

Yet both may be missing the point.

If military action means a few brief airstrikes or missile attacks, it is certain to be counterproductive.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad might even welcome such attacks in the hope that they would lift the uncertainty that is damaging the Iranian economy and undermining his authority. And he would not be wrong.

I'm thinking that about 500,000 heavilly armmed assassins could get the job done.

I wonder if a promise to give nuclear weapons to Armenia in the event that Iran develops them would be a deterrent?

The famous ninja quote, five paragraphs down (about al Qaeda):

He approached Gen. Hugh Shelton, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and said, according to the book, "It would scare the (expletive) out of al Qaeda if suddenly a bunch of black ninjas rappelled out of helicopters in to the middle of their camp. It would get us an enormous deterrence and show those guys we're not afraid."

Yes, but John Kerry has the solution to this Iran bruhaha... Just give them the uranium, and we'll see if they use it for peaceful purposes.

They writer makes a few points that leave questions about his sources but his point is made, Al Gore and Bill Clinton strategies will not work.

The Iranian leader states..

"They just don't get it," he told an audience in Bushehr earlier this month. "They think that because they pass a resolution everyone is obliged to obey them. Our message is simple: Pass resolutions until you are blue in the face! We are guided by what the Hidden Imam tells us, not what you dictate in your resolutions."

Which leads me to believe nothing short of all out war will stop him.

Me too.

Everyone says they love western culture, but silence from the lambs is all we get. It makes me appreciate the freedom of speech we have here even more. These people must be terrified to speak out.

Well, since the mullahs gave a seminar on suicide bombing to 1000 UNIVERSITY STUDENTS last week, finishing off with an event where a good number of the students signed pledges to go off and be suicide bombers, I'm not sure we necessarily want that.

A lot of the younger ones supported and worked for the election of the current nutcase and were dissatisfied with the prior leaders only because they felt they are not extreme enough.

That said, there are certainly some who are opposed to the regime and its craziness. It's a complicated situation, but I don't think we should pin our hopes on them; we've been engaging in that wishful thinking for some time now.
