Bush signs renewal of Patriot Act

WASHINGTON - After a long battle with Congress that went down to the wire, President Bush signed a renewal of the USA Patriot Act on Thursday, a day before 16 major provisions of the old law expire.

Bush said the Patriot Act is vital to win the war on terror and protect Americans. He recalled the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and said the country is still at war.

"We saw the terrorists' destructive vision for us when they killed nearly 3,000 men, women and children," Bush said. "In the face of this ruthless threat, our nation has made a clear choice - we will confront this mortal danger, we will stay on the offensive and we're not going to wait to be attacked again."

Bush's signature came less than 48 hours after the House passed the legislation, ending several months of debate on Capitol Hill over how to balance Americans' right to privacy with a need to foil potential terrorist threats. Political battles over the legislation forced Congress to twice extend the expiration date of the Patriot Act.

"The Patriot Act has accomplished exactly what it was designed to do," Bush said during a signing ceremony in the White House East Room. "It has helped us detect terrorist cells, disrupt terrorist plots and save American lives."

Republicans want to take the law into the upcoming midterm elections to show they are acting to protect national security.

The legislation renews the expiring provisions of the original Patriot Act, including one that lets federal officials obtain "tangible items," such as business records, from libraries and bookstores, in connection with foreign intelligence and international terrorism investigations.

Other provisions clarify that foreign intelligence or counterintelligence officers should share information obtained as part of a criminal investigation with agencies.

According to the polls, just under 50 percent of the public now trusts the Dims more on national security. As for the posters here, I'm not going to count them all, but judging by the number of Harriet Miers pics, the "FU Jorge" posts, the rants of the "Bush sucks Arab ass" variety, the countless "Bush is selling us out" claims, etc., I'd say at least 40 percent of the people right here on FR will at the least sit out in November, or may even actively campaign for the democrats so that they can gain enough seats in the House to impeach Bush. JMO.

Please cite for me three examples of where the Patriot Act has been used to infringe on the Constitutional Rights of Americans.

Right.
You can't.
It is done in secret. And if I knew a event do you think I'm foolish enough to type it on the net?
I don't want to go to jail as an enemy combatant.

Horse Puckie! I hope you do your engineering based on reality instead of bs like this claim.

Most of the Bush Haters are the same rotten group who are still in depression of Harry Browne's demise or still think that Pat Buckywheat will rise again.

I have a challenge for you. I will donate $100 to Free Republic if the Republicans lose the majority in the house in the upcoming 2006 elections, if you vow to donate $100 to Free Republic, if the republicans don't lose their majority.

I will send a $100 check to Jim Rob today to hold in escrow if you want to bet and send a check to cover your bs. There may be others who want to bet you.

No arguing or bs and no whining Freepmails.

Are you on re the $100 bet?

If not buzz off.

Last but not least, if you lose and don't pay, I will bug you until you do.

The ports deal did more for the Democrats in 4 weeks than whining about the Patriot Act did in 4 years.

I'll take a piece of that action! Republicans will not lose seats in the Senate. As bad as they are at times, Democrats are addicted to losing.

I'll take some action on whether Republican Congress actually does something conservative.

Balance the budget by 2008?

You are simply not allowed to make intelligent observations like that around these parts any longer, Tulsa Ramjet. I weighed in against a few of Bush's major malaprops this am: Ballooning the Fed w/Education; Homeland Security's lack of security; and, finally, the Port Deal. These are areas I feel Bush has been weak in. If you disagree, so be it: but please, in honor of the intent of the forum, give me a logical argument and I'll think about it. But no, all I got was invective and ad hominum. Some perpetual invoker of LOLLOLLOL took a variety of swipes at me, and her compadres joined in. But not a reasoned counter point, not a new bit of info, or an detailed opposing view in the lot. Well, actually no, there was one poster. I have to review the thread to recall who it was. But the majority of the attack dogs had no facts, no argument, and just a lot of personal spittle. Sheesh. V's wife.

NOTE : The following post does not apply to
those FReepers who are
1) Active Duty
2) Those with disabilities
3) Care givers ff those with disabilities
4) Those with financial hardships
5) Those who actually support our troops in other ways.

IF people REALLY cared, they would get away from the computer and actually do something,
in the real world, to actually assist the Coast Guard.

I've done it each and every week,
often more than once a week,
since Oct 2001

I don't receive a dime and even pay for my own uniforms.

The choice is either "listen" to all the pros and cons
or actually be part of the solution.

PS You'll have to leave your "politics"
at the door while you wear the uniform.

"But the majority of the attack dogs had no facts, no argument, and just a lot of personal spittle."

Here is what I think happens, or maybe it has morphed to this:
A major issue is launched on a thread. Conservatives start laying the battle lines. Elected conservative staffs, or self-interested parties starts checkin' how the threads are going. Lo and behold, it is going the wrong way of their boss! They start jumpin' in as if it is a WWF caged match, tag-teaming inquisitive conservatives questioning valid points. They try to beat them to submission. The poster trails off and disappears. They claim victory. What they fail to realize is those initial reactions is what that poster feels. Unvalidated drivel is not going to change their opinion. We've got paid party boys hittin' the threads trying to march to their own drum.

For illegal activities, then? Okay with me.

One man's job is another man's illegal activity.

Bugs in the boardroom will be next.

Bugs in the classroom are sure to follow. At least our kids will be safe.

Lotsa tools for Hillary to use at her disposal, thanks to unthinking Republicans.
