Nearly 60%(approximate) of the entire federal budget is for entitlements. I think that's enough.

How about local ccharities picking up the slack?

Perhaps there would be more free food to go around if they had a BMI weigh-in calculation.

Fortunately, they can (over)feed themselves. Obesity is the number one health problem among the poorest Americans.

If we are gong to have price supports then I like the idea of giving the food the elderly poor rather than paying farmers not to produce at all (FDR's idea).

But I question whether price supports are good for the country in the first place.

"Here we are, the richest country in the world, and we can't feed our poor" She forgot to add "several times over".

Can we also check to see about the home equity holdings of these "poor" seniors?

Reverse mortgage anyone, or are we workers shelling out so that their kids can inherit $250,000 free and clear?

Sherrie Tussler, the task force's director, said 5,000 people in Milwaukee receive the stock boxes. "I've been told that we have to eliminate 700 people by June," she said. "I don't know how we're going to do it."

Tip: Use smaller boxes and don't eliminate anyone.

Let them cut their own food, then.

I am all for cutting entitlements, but cutting food to low income elderly individuals would be the last place I would cut. These folks can't work as the younger poor can.

Also, if we can give special tax breaks to NASCAR owners like we did in the last major tax act a year or so ago, it seems hard to justify. It will be prime fodder for a congressional defeat this fall.

That is because they can only eat at McDonalds and other fast food joints where as the rich can eat at healthier places. Please note the sarcasm.

"I've been told that we have to eliminate 700 people by June," she said. "I don't know how we're going to do it."

You take the 700 highest earners of the group counting ALL sources of income to include any other socialist perks they're already getting such as WIC or Food Stamps, delete them from your rolls and hand them a listing of the Food Pantries and Church Soup Kitchens that are on each corner in this Great Nation of Ours.

I buy huge boxes of bread (wrapped loaves) at the Day Old Bread Store for ONE DOLLAR to feed to my laying hens. It's not unusual for me to find 6-8 loaves of bread, per box, that are MORE than adequate for me to eat myself. Into the freezer they go!

There is an amazing bounty of food in our cities and even small Cow Towns of 6,000 like mine. No one DOES go hungry to the point of starvation in this country, Gwen Moore! I have yet to see Cause of Death listed as "Starvation" on any filed, public record Death Certificate. *Rolleyes*

(FWIW, Gwen Moore's son was one of the group of five charged with tire-slashing at Milwaukee GOP HQs the last election. She's a real piece of work.)

The surplus food program was the federal welfare food program in place before food stamps.

Recepients got staple items such as flour, lard, grains, peanut butter. Should scrap food stamps and all the junk food it can buy and go back to the old program.

Food prep will take longer but they have the time to do it.

"Every month I pay my bills, and then whatever's left goes for food."

Where are your kids, lady? Doesn't sound like you raised them too well, if they're letting you go on the dole.

Isn't this what "death with dignity" is for? Eliminate the useless eaters. /sarcasm

The only fair thing to do is return to these seniors all of the money they paid into the program through excessive taxation throughout their lives that they have not received back through cheese allotments. Removing from them now what SOME OF THEM worked and paid for seems equally unjust.

Socialism is bad for more than one reason. Once started, it creates no good choices for escape.

Don't any of these people have family or church to help them? Wonder how many have cable TV or play Bingo on weekends but can't buy food.

A point that I have often wondered about.
