About 100 senior citizens rallied to protest a proposal by the Bush administration to eliminate a program that provides grains, cereal, cheese, canned goods and other food to the poor, and forcing taxpayers to pay for it at gun point.

In order for the poor to get fed free they must show that they are poor, so to get the free food, they assign assets and forgo formal income and we magically end up with even more poor to feed, and the cycle goes on...

"Government Cheese"

I loved that cheese!! My grandmother used to get those supplies and shared it with my family. It did go a long way in supplementing our food budget. Dad worked two jobs, kept the bills paid and we ate alot of beans and hamburgers.

In some cases, these commodities go to people who don't really need them but in other cases, it does mean the difference in eating and not eating. We can dredge up all the "waste" stories to prove that this is a bad idea but in the long run I'd bet the "waste" doesn't outnumber the folks who really need it.

I'd really like to see all of these types of programs put under one "superprogram" if you will. One set of realistic income guidelines and more accountability in those that administer them. But then I guess that would make too much sense!
