CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Terrorism experts say a man who admits to plowing into a group of people to avenge the treatment of Muslims fits the description of a burgeoning type of terrorist -- a lone actor unaffiliated with any organization.
Some students have called on school administrators to label Mohammed Taheri-azar a terrorist for his March 3 attack at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Although UNC Chancellor James Moeser has declined to define the attack, experts outside of the school have not been hesitant to offer their opinions.
"Well, he's a terrorist," said Solomon Bradman, chief executive officer of the Miami-based Security Solutions International. "In this world of global terrorism, you don't have ties back to any particular group. In this new world, terror comes from incitement -- it doesn't come from an organization. The only thing that makes this not look like a terrorist act is that he did a lousy job of it."
Taheri-azar is at Central Prison in Raleigh with bond set at $5.5 million.
Taheri-azar's stated reason for the attack sounds like the motivations of suicide bombers in the Middle East and the suicide hijackers of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S., Bradman said.
Taheri-azar, a native of Iran, sats he intended to kill the people he struck and wants to defend himself in court and believes a trial will offer him the opportunity to educate people about the will of Allah.
Such religious and cultural motivations make him "the perfect recruit for terrorists," Bradman said.
"The battle against terrorism today is against a violent ideology rather than a well-organized, top-down group," Levin said. "It's just a matter of time before we get someone -- an immigrant or someone American-born -- who commits a higher-intensity act of terrorism."

Hmm, seems we're getting a bit loose with the term "terrorist."
Fruitcake Wannabe Terrorist. Real terrorist don't stop their attack, call 911 and peacefully turn himself into police.
I don't see why the term "fanatic" isn't used.
He is a new breed of Westernized terrorist that lacks the testicular fortitude to detonate the vehicle.
OK. So he is a fanatical terrorist.
If memory serves (darned if I can find a quote), but weren't some students clamoring for this to be labeled a terrorist attack?
--Hmm, seems we're getting a bit loose with the term "terrorist."
The guy who shot all the white people in the subway using a machine gun would be a terrorist then. If we keep it up we'll have to come up with a new word or phrase for the real terrorists. Lunatic's better for this one unless some connection with something larger than this one guy can be shown.
Murder of civilians for political means pretty much sums it up. We've simply been to tolerant of it in the past.
Well DUH!!!!!!!! Talk about stating the obvious!
What if another Muslim does the same thing next week and succeeds in killing a few people?
How do you say "electric chair" in Farsi?
So the gent was just a "fan" of Muhammed's. Logical, if understated.
I think the term "stupid a-hole" works just fine.
A little different than being a fan of the Florida Marlins, but you get the point.
