Seeking FREEPer Reaction to: Bush's budget cuts make cancer even scarier By Bob Herbert San Gabriel Valley Tribune
The federal government has a national breast and cervical cancer early detection program, run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It provides screening and other important services to low-income women who do not have health insurance or are underinsured. There is agreement across the board that the program is a success. It saves lives, and it saves money. Its biggest problem is it doesn't reach enough women. At the moment, there is only enough funding to screen one in five eligible women.
Preventing cancer, or treating it early, is a lot less expensive than treating advanced cancer. So what did this president do? He proposed a cut in the program of $1.4 million (a minuscule amount when you're talking about the national budget), which would mean that 4,000 fewer women would have access to early detection.
"The program is really designed to help working women," said Dan Smith, a senior vice president at the American Cancer Society. "They may be working at a job that doesn't provide health insurance, but they're not the poorest of the poor who would qualify for Medicaid." In many cases, these are women who do not have family doctors who might encourage them to be screened. The program offers free mammograms, Pap tests and other early detection services. "If they're diagnosed," said Smith, "there's a complementary program that allows them to be immediately insured so they can actually have the coverage for their treatment. That's a great program, as well."

Am I wrong? Bush had nothing to do with this? These cuts are being proposed by Congress? Bush isn't a King who rules everything.
Are they even cuts, or just reductions in the rate of increase? If the latter, that's NOT a cut.
Yes, well, apparently that's his fault, too.
Whenever the "newsies" say "SCARIER" or "SCARY" that means "Propaganda Follows".
So now it's government's job to cure cancer?
Talk about "womb to the tom".
Just one of many reasons why the World Health Organization rated Medical Care in the US 34th of 190 member nations.
Bush Causes Cancer!!!!!
Well, at least now we know some of what Karl Rove does when it's not hurricane season.
I wish this were true. Government destroys medicine.
Real cut or a slight trim off a $100 million planned increase.
FYI, that's why everything posted here is posted here. ;O)
The fundamental premise of this article is entirely wrong. If the Founding Fathers saw the detail to which government intrusion has descended, they would be utterly horrified - Jefferson argued that the Federal Government should not fund internal improvements, i.e., roads. He would say that liberty was more important than catering to every little need that one can think of. People have a responsibility to monitor and take care of their own health, it is not the job of the government to do so.
So, as a Freeper, my reaction is this - the author of the article doesn't understand the fundamental premise upon which the government is supposed to be based. But then again, neither do many Republicans.
Regards, Ivan
and the sun spots are Bush's fault too.
I will have to admit this is one area where Slick Willie was much more personally involved than Bush. Slick and his Willie did much personal research in the area of breasts and cervix early detection.
I'm much less afraid of cancer when government spending goes up...
No taxpayer money should go to cancer research until and unless that money stops being used for pacs and publicity. Taxpayer funds should be spent on real science, not propaganda.
