NASHVILLE The Senate should void a special election that put a Memphis Democrat into office, a committee looking into claims of voting irregularities recommended Thursday.
Sen. Ophelia Ford was certified the 13-vote winner of the September election, but it was immediately challenged by the Republican candidate.
A special Senate committee looking into the case voted 4-1 Thursday that there was enough evidence to conclude her margin of victory was in doubt because of ballots cast in the names of dead voters, felons and people who didnt live in the district.
The matter now goes to the full Senate, which is expected to take it up on Wednesday.
In February, Senate Majority Leader Ron Ramsey persuaded the Senate to vote to oust Ford, but a federal judge interrupted that process and said the Senate could continue only if it has consistent standards for voiding election results.
Ford, who hasnt been accused of wrongdoing, took over the Senate seat vacated by her brother John after he was indicted in the Tennessee Waltz public corruption investigation.
You reckon?
Strike 2 for Harold Ford Jr. to succeed Dr. Frist as my senator. Strike 1 was daddy's generation, particularly Uncle John.
say it isn't so..a DEM that had dead people, felons and out of district people voting?? where'd they think they were, Chicago??
do I really have to say it???
Yes, Captain Renault, I'm afraid you do.
Hopefully dead people voting are within the standard.
Republicans should just steal the Democrat line about Culture of Corruption and just start talking about this and the countless other indiscretions the Rats have been caught in.
Junior's chances outside West Tennessee are laughable at best. It has nothing to do with his questionable lineage, or the felonious nature of such. It has everything to do with Tennessee being much too "Red", and that he is a joke with nothing but an ambition to be POTUS someday; he is just too transparent.
That being said, if one is a Memphian, I fear, there is definitlely a Ford in your future. Harold, Sr. will pull out all the stops, next time out, and Ophelia will trounce any Republican opponent.
Watch for Nathan Bedford Forrest's name to show up on a ballot application. Old Nate will probably show as a vote for Ophelia numerous times, just to put it in the face of legitimate voters, and nobody will do a damned thing about it.
