West Bank, 20 April (AKI) - The Palestinian son-in-law of al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed during an American bombing in Afghanistan several days ago, the French news agency AFP reports. Family members of Houssam Abdellatif Abu Bakr opened a mourning house for condolence visits in his home village near Jenin in the West Bank, shortly after news of his death was received. Abu Bakr, 32, was married to Fatima Al Zahra'a, a daughter of Zawahiri, and was father to four children, his relatives told AFP.

According to family, Abu Bakr was also "one of the main bodyguards" of Osama bin Laden. His parents, who have been living in Saudi Arabia since the 1970s, received a phone call on Wednesday "announcing the death of their son in an American bombardment in Afghanistan," said his relatives in Yaabad.

Wishing I was on vacation!

To add to the thread ;-), I think Zawahiri just might be dust.

Ever since last week's release of an old tape of his which hadn't previously been released....I've been wondering...

"He was alive up until last week when he made a call to his family....so his death was very recent.."
Roger that. Things are not going to go very well for the insurgents during this spring/summer/fall offensive. With increasing pressure from the Paki side, working with our forces and the Afghan forces, who knows, UBL and Zawahiri and other's at the top and middle may no longer be around by the time the snows fall once more.

Of course I can. So can just about everyone else on God's green Earth. You're the only one routinely focusing on one side.

http://www.adnki.com/index_2Level_English.php?cat=Terrorism&loid=8.0.289471648&par=0 <--- Also reported on this same website and probably here too, so sorry, if this is redundant;

"Khar, Pakistan tribal region, 21 April (AKI/DAWN) - A suspected al-Qaeda militant believed to have close links to the terrorist network's number two, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and a security official have been killed in a shootout in Pakistan's Bajaur tribal region, according to a Pakistani security official. The official identified the militant killed in Thursday's shooting by his alias, Abu Marwan, a Saudi national, known for expertise in explosives. The official said that Abu Marwan was wanted by the US and he was one of the targets of a US air raid at Damadola village in Bajaur on 18 January."

Thanks for the ping.

Got a very short phone call from my Marine late Wednesday night, said things are going well but he would be out of touch for sometime and don't worry.

Sounds like we are doing a little "hammer & anvil" with Op Mt Lion and the Pak forces. This op is having a very real results, that is why the MSM is working hard to ignore it.

No news is allowed out at this point for operational security, from what I understand. Probably the only reason we know this is because the family told.

So glad you got to hear that voice. {{{hugs}}}

You can't see Pakistan is playing both sides of this game, yet you think you're qualified to judge who's ignorant.

The reality is Musharraff has done about as good a job as can be expected of him - He is dealing with a very complex situation within his own Country -

Another reality you seem to simply ignore is the fact that Pakistan doesn't control these border regions. They can't! Which is why they haven't in over a century -

On the whole Musharraff has been a solid ally in the WOT. Outside of three or four other Nations they have stepped up to the plate more so then all the rest.

You don't seem to have a very good understanding of how these border regions operate and how they are autonomous for the most part from the Pak Gov't itself -

They "can't" control these border regions because its politically convenient for them not to. There is no excuse for any "lawless territories" in any soverign nation.

As I said before, you obviously have absolutely no idea what you are talking about regarding the border regions of Pak (or Stan for that matter). There is centuries of history in this particular region we are talking about - No centralized Gov't has ever controlled these areas.

Understand the terrain we are talking about (along with the history). The border region stretches nearly 2,000 miles along Pakistan's Pashtun belt -- from Chitral in the Northern Areas near the Chinese border, south through the tribal agencies including Waziristan, down to Zhob on the Balochistan border, then southwest to the Iranian border. The region includes every landscape from desert to snow-capped mountains.

Hell we are talking roughly over 44,000 Sq miles of the most rugged terrain on earth just in the NWFP alone!

The ability of even our military is completely stretched trying to conduct sustained Ops in this region. The logistics alone are a complete nightmare (let alone what the Pak military can do).

You are clearly speaking of a region and a subject you know very little to nothing about.

Regards,

Bud, you are simply make of a fool of yourself here - Again, you have no concept of history nor of the terrain / customs of the region in where UBL is eking out his survival (along with another 5 or 6 HVTs).

Furthermore you have no concept of what the Pak military is capable of -

Additionally with your logic we are complete failures since we haven't managed to catch Zarqawi in Iraq - A country in which we have apprx 140,000 U.S. soldiers, support from the majority of the public and an OODA loop that is much shorter then currently what the Pak forces could hope to have in the Pak border regions. Yet Zarqawi remains free and on the run going on 3 years now -

Sorry bud, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about....and you've made a fool of yourself.

Pakistan doesn't enforce its laws

And what don't you understand about the word "autonomous"? Because that is what the border regions of Pakistan have been to the Gov't for well over a century.

Do you even have the slightest idea about the logistics alone of running sustained operations in that region of the world? Of course you don't (that is obvious). You simply like to run your mouth.

Take some advice, the adults are in charge so you need not even worry about informing yourself any further -

Yeah, I haven't been invited to Musharaf's house, so you're right, I'm not familiar with the terrain and customs of his guest room.

Furthermore you have no concept of what the Pak military is capable of -

Its pretty obvious they aren't capable, period.

Additionally with your logic we are complete failures since we haven't managed to catch Zarqawi in Iraq

Speaking of dumbasses who don't know what they're talking about, you're comparing a foreign expeditionary force with a sovereign government.

History lesson bud - We have more control over Iraq (with vastly more support from the public at large) then the Pak Gov't has had over the border regions in the last century!

Again, with your logic we are purposely not catching Zarqawi in Iraq....we are not only failures but purposely allowing him to roam free around Iraq causing death.

Sorry bud, as you've shown you don't have a clue what you are talking about in the least.

Spoken like a first class fool who has no idea what he/she is talking about - Nor has he /she ever stepped foot in the region to even have the slightest understanding of the real situation.

UBL, Zawahiri, J Haqqani, G Hekmatyar, M. Omar and another 3 or 4 HVTs you've likely never heard of are all eking out their survivals in between the Pak / Afghan border regions.

They are not surviving because of or with the help of any Gov't...they are eking out this survival because in the short run this region of the world put the variable of time on their side.

Why don't you redouble your efforts to understand Central Asia and come up with a workable plan to deal with the aftermath of Musharraf's assasination?

Of course, that would require more than angry one-liners, so I won't hold my breath.

But I'm real glad you guys are just so gosh darn diddly happy about charging the US Taxpayer and deploying the US Army to secure Pakistan's border, and generally doing dirty work Pakistanis refuse to do.
